Keeley hadn’t called her on any of it. Which she was grateful for. And a little suspicious of. But mostly grateful, for the way her friend kept looking at her every so often with a soft, reassuring smile.
“He’s going to love it,” she kept saying. “Even if you burn the pudding, he’ll still love it.”

Deep down, in the small, shadowed part of his heart that is slowly beginning to accept that this isn’t a farce, that a wrong turn of phrase won’t leave him terribly heartbroken; in the part of him still coming to terms with the end of his marriage, absolving himself, ever so carefully, of all the blame; in the part of him that wakes up most mornings with Rebecca wrapped around him like a second skin, leg wedged between his and her nose pushed into his shoulder, her fingers always cold against his skin, he knows this isn’t a sign of anything.
It isn’t that she’s gotten tired of him, or being close to him. Isn’t that she’s putting distance between them, rebuilding walls they’d both painstakingly torn down. It isn’t that she’s found his presence suddenly too much, the way Michelle had at the end.
It’s just that, well, his bed is small.
Extremely small.
