Summary
Spring in Ottawa is pretty beautiful, if you think it might be your last. Crocuses peek out from under the frozen ground, purple dots against the thin layer of snow. The days are getting longer. Ilya’s been spending a lot of time sitting in the sun and watching the gentle canopy of leaves stretch out across the water. He tries to be positive about it. He used to only get hours with Shane. Minutes. Two weeks between seasons at the cottage used to stretch out in front of him like a sun-soaked forever. Ten years of reaching out and two weeks of grabbing and touching and having. He used to live for those hours and minutes and seconds. Six months to five years, they tell him, and in the grand scheme of things, six months really isn't that bad.
Spring and summer, Shane and Ilya, and a life sentence that's all too short.

Summary
Ilya Rozanov, over the years, as seen through the eyes of the people of Boston.
A tall man in a heavy coat stops by their house’s fence, falling to a level squat and holding the back of his fingers through the slats like an offering. And there’s Mocha, her skittish Siamese, going right up to him. The cat Ashley’s had since she was a teenager, who hates strangers, who ran even from her little brother during that first year, shoving the flat of her head against this man’s hand and turning around so he can pet along her outstretched spine. In his other hand, there’s a cigarette. He pulls at it periodically, turning his head from the wind and blowing the smoke away from Mocha.
“What the fuck?” she says aloud.

"Sveta," he says, before she can greet him. "I think I'm about to do something very stupid."
"You're always doing something stupid," she laughs, her voice tinny over the speakerphone. "What is it this time?"
"I am in a staring contest with a bottle of pills," Ilya says. "And I think the pills might win."

Summary
Ilya hadn’t known the video existed. If he had known, he would have paid someone to have it destroyed. Would have paid someone to murder Kuznetsov, maybe, just for redundancy's sake. But it was peak stupidity, to keep evidence of your homosexual perversion around in a country where that crime could get you sent to jail for several decades, and Ilya hadn’t thought that Kuznetsov would be that dumb.
Now here Ilya was, watching a video of his fourteen-year-old self on Twitter getting fucked by his former hockey coach.
So. There go the plans for the rest of his life.
-
Or: in 2018, during Ilya's last year with the Raiders, an old video is leaked on Twitter. Ilya reacts, or overreacts. Shane does, too.

Bookmarker's Notes
Ilya shakes his head, crossing his arms over his bare chest. He suddenly really wishes he were dressed for this conversation. “You’re making it sound—you’re making me sound like some helpless, pathetic little thing. Aw, baby Ilya, he doesn’t know how to do anything. He needs help. I was in control, Hollander. I knew what I was doing. After my mama—it was the best move. It was strategic. He gave me more play time, you see? This is how I became captain at thirteen. This is how I got noticed for the national teams, this is how I got here, in the MLH, with everything I ever fucking wanted. I made that happen for myself. I chose it. Is not some—pathetic, abused thing.”
Shane nods, like he really believes him. “Okay,” he says. “So why are you crying?”
I’m not crying, Ilya wants to snap back, but as soon as he has the thought, he realizes Shane is right. There are tears wet on his face, and he raises a hand to swipe them away, but they come back just as fast. Ilya’s mouth falls open, and the tears coat his lips, full of salt.
