She didn’t know where he’d gotten the spotless sedan he picked her up in. Her car was totaled, his truck also on its last legs, and she’d been stumbling down the road in bare feet, carrying her heels and looking for cell phone signal when he’d pulled up beside her.“Look, ma’am, are you gonna get in, or am I gonna have to follow you all the way back?”
He’d driven alongside her for five minutes, neither of them saying a word, before she huffed in annoyance and got in the car.
They’d ridden in silence, not looking at one another.
