She wasn't what he would've expected Ripper's pretty little attempt at normalcy to be like- in fact, she wasn't anything like normalcy, even for a Watcher's girlfriend. Thus far, she'd proven to be snarky, a little reckless, and apparently just self-loathing enough to make him want to know what makes her tick.
When Ethan drops by Sunnydale High after hours to leave a surprise for Rupert in the library, he doesn't expect to have to play the hero, or to spend any amount of time with his ex's new girlfriend. Somehow, he ends up doing both, and it leaves him incredibly curious about what she's like when a vampire hasn't just given her a horrifying concussion.
So of course, when she turns up at the magic shop he frequents in San Francisco, talking about going on a road trip and pointedly not explaining what happened between her and Rupert, well- he has to tag along, naturally.

"Willow," he whispered, "behind you. Please help me sound like a normal person for five seconds so she doesn't hate me."
Cedric Merlin Giles-Rayne has had his whole life uprooted for his father's work, and aside from his worry that his father will be in more danger on the Hellmouth, that hasn't bothered him... until today. When he meets the Slayer that his father is meant to be training.
For Buffy, Cedric is just another new friend at her new school, and unlike his dad, he seems perfectly content to let her be as normal as she wants. He's charming, and she likes him, but her world is flipping upside down all the time anyway- he's not turning anything upside down for her. But for Cedric, he's suddenly facing the looming specter of fate, and potentially a fate he'd thought he could avoid. And the worst part is, he doesn't even fully know it yet.

A chance encounter at a Los Angeles music festival turns into one of the best weekends of Rupert Giles' life, but while he'd certainly like it to be more than that, there's little to no chance that he'll ever see the charming, normal computer teacher he met there again, and even if there was, she certainly couldn't fit into the life of a Watcher...

All Ethan had wanted was to know he wouldn't be alone, wouldn't have to go back to the way he'd lived before Ripper. Not that he was any good at saying so, which meant his best bet would be a big, dramatic gesture. He was, after all, quite good at dramatics.
It wasn't quite meant to go like this, however. But he wouldn't change a thing.
