Monet took a slow drag, exhaled elegantly toward the stars, and sighed. “There,” she said smugly. “At least someone knows what they’re doing.”
Jubilee scoffed. “Okay, first of all—”
“Easy, Lee.” The words brushed warm and low through her mind before she could properly start arguing. Jono glanced toward her, amusement flickering behind his eyes.
Monet sat there looking impossibly composed, smoke curling from her mouth like a beautiful actress in some black-and-white French movie instead of a teenager sneaking cigarettes on the school roof. Jubilee rolled her eyes dramatically and shoved her cigarette between her lips instead. There was no way she was about to let Monet St. Croix have the coolest moment of the night.
“Fine,” she muttered. “C’mon, hot stuff.” Then she leaned toward Jono. The psionic glow painted both their faces gold-red in the dark, flickering softly against Jono’s pale skin and the curve of Jubilee’s cheekbones.
