It could be enchanted gold, souls or children for all we care. It doesn't matter if it was a farmer, if it was a man or a woman or a child. The witch could be a man too, what did it matter? Maybe the farmer wasn't a farmer at all, maybe he was a merchant, or a scholar, or a baron or lord or even king.
All that matters is this: there is always someone desperate, and there is always a witch, and people will always go into the woods with thoughts of love or wealth or fame or power in their head, and the witch will always ask for something in return.
