Summary
This is a non-fiction piece about Ilya's journey through grief in season 1 of Heated Rivalry.
The central point of my praxis is that grief arrives for us when what we knew to be true is no longer true. As such, we need to develop new truths to live into if we want to live authentic lives, and our grief can lead us to those new truths. I am very interested in the idea that when we are able to truly be with our grief in honest and authentic ways, instead of turning away from it as white western colonial culture teaches us to, that communion puts us on a threshold where we can decide to move towards our new truths while holding sacred the grief of what's been lost or changed.
I used Francis Weller's Five Gates of Grief framework in this analysis, along with my own called The Griefwork Hourglass. I think season one shows a really beautiful journey of Ilya standing at all of FW's five gates, crossing the threshold each time to move towards a more liberated version of self who can love and be loved back by Shane.

Summary
Shane and Ilya broke up. It was the adult, mature decision they made together and moved on from. Except Shane is still Ilya's emergency contact and Ilya's coach just called.
Ilya had a seizure. Well, seizures. Multiple. He is in the hospital, in the operation block and suddenly Shane is met with the possibility that last words Ilya Rozanov ever heard from him were "Maybe love isn't enough."
And then complications occur. And Ilya is not waking up.

They’d sat on a perfectly ordinary Wednesday afternoon in their perfectly ordinary kitchen, with coffee that had gone cold on the table between them, and calmly dismantled the life they’d built together. One sentence at a time.
“Maybe we need space.” “Maybe we’re just hurting each other.” “Maybe love isn’t enough.”
He wants to go back and shove that version of himself against the wall. Shake him until his teeth rattle.
Love is the only thing that matters when someone is under general anaesthesia and a stranger is touching their brain, Shane thinks wildly. Love is literally the only currency worth anything in a room like this.

Why choose one Alternative Universe when you can have Shane and Ilya find each other in every universe?
Our story begins when Shane Hollander finds himself dropped into a life where he has been cast in his first movie alongside Rose fucking Landry and teenage soap star slash Hollywood bad boy Ilya Rozanov.
Shane has no idea how he got here (Toronto in July 2010 specifically). All he does know is that his body apparently remembers Ilya Rozanov. Shane quickly settles into his new reality, but hazy memories of hotel room hookups and rooftop skylines leave him questioning what is real.
And then just when Shane and Ilya seem to be on the top of the world, Shane finds himself being woken up by some dude named Hayden who keeps yammering about . . . .
well, you will just have to find out for yourself. But be warned, the universe seems to seriously enjoy fucking with Shane Hollander.

When Shane takes a hard hit on the ice, he wakes up three days later to find his reality has been shattered. But the truth is, it wasn’t reality at all. Just an elaborate set of false memories conjured by a brain injury. 'False memory syndrome' they call it. Shane calls it a nightmare he couldn't have imagined.

Shane doesn’t have amnesia. Instead, he wakes up wanting his boyfriend only to realize his brain concocted a bunch of fake memories of a nine year situationship and Shane has no idea how to live in his actual reality that Ilya hasn’t been a part of. Luckily, Ilya is…curious.

"There in the photo was a young man in a hammock with a serene lake behind him, bathed in an orange sunset. A book was open in his lap and he was smiling up at the camera, easy and relaxed. Ilya didn’t think he’d ever seen anyone look so effortlessly gorgeous in a pair of ratty sweatpants and a bleach-stained t-shirt. He also didn’t think he’d ever find a personal family photo of Shane Hollander, the up-and-coming hockey sensation from Canada who had gone missing in November of 2008, in a thrift shop in Boston."
Ilya and Shane never met at world juniors because Shane vanished without a trace. Against all logic, he appears almost two years later in Ilya's dreams. Those dreams begin to blur the line between fiction and reality, becoming muddy and impossible to navigate. As Ilya falls in love with a dead man, he finds that he cares less and less about those lines. When the opportunity to solve the mystery and bring closure to Shane's parents presents itself, Ilya must face whatever reality may truly be, even if that means losing the love of his life for good.
