    Summary

He knows everything Buck has been trying not to say. He’d been uncharacteristically silent through it all, from the moment he first found the real estate listings to the time Eddie started planning for the trip, even when he’d been talked down by everyone else from a permanent move to a long visit.

He’s been quiet, but Eddie knows that Buck loves him. That, despite it, because of it, he will never make Eddie choose between him and his son.

Or: Buck drives Eddie to the airport. Eddie knows he won't tell him that he loves him, but he loves him. Everything unspoken hangs between them in the air.

    Summary

    Tommy looks flabbergasted. “My attention?”

“I mean, yeah, I guess,” Buck replies. Because it’s the only explanation of the past few weeks that should make sense—why his stomach is in knots, why his chest feels so tight whenever he sees Eddie and Tommy together. Because he can’t face the alternative. “Who else?”

    “Eddie? The person you’re dating?”

Or: The one where Tommy likes Eddie, Eddie is dating Marisol, Marisol hates Buck, and Buck is really, really confused (or as they might say, bothered and bewildered).

    Summary

There’s an itchy feeling that Buck can’t place. It started when he saw Eddie and Tommy leaving together on a helicopter, got worse when he had to hear about ringside tickets and muay thai and karaoke and trivia bars, and became impossible to ignore with when you meet somebody and you just click.

Or: a ficlet of Buck spiraling up to the basketball scene. rejection sensitivity, am i right?

    Summary

Death marks Buck as soon as he takes his first breath.

She places a kiss on his head, close to his left eye—a reminder that he is tied to her as much as she is to him.

He was made to be a sacrifice. A life for a life. A son for a son.

    It doesn’t work that way.

Or: How Buck learns to live, as told by Death.

    Summary

"Who wouldn’t want to go on a date with this pretty face?” Buck says, tapping a hand on Eddie’s cheek.

It should be comical—satirical, maybe—two single best friends playing up the romance so they wouldn’t be the odd ones out in a romantic setting. But Buck’s voice is a shade too sincere, the hand on Eddie’s face too gentle, the look in their eyes too soft. And, okay, Chimney would like the spit bucket now, please. He could gag at the sweetness.

“What, you’re only on a date with me for my pretty face?” Eddie asks, and Jesus, they’re still staring into each other’s eyes.

Or: The group goes to a Wine & Cheese Night and tries to figure out if Buck and Eddie know they're dating.

    Summary

“You have a good partner, Eddie.”

Eddie flushes, because he knows that her partner isn’t the same as work partner. It’s an assumption they had never bothered to correct at Christopher’s school, mostly because it made it easier for people to understand why Buck was around so often, versus best friend or colleague or legal guardian in case I die.

“Yeah,” Eddie responds, his voice thicker than he expected. “He’s the best partner I could ask for.”

Or: Christopher hosts a sleepover, Buck helps, and Eddie realizes he hasn’t been a single dad in years.

    Summary

The 118 is a close-knit family. It’s not surprising given how much time they spend together: endless hours at the firehouse, barbecues on the weekends, the occasional night at the bar.

They’re a family, yes... but Buck and Eddie don’t have to tell them everything.

They’re allowed their secrets, really, and it’s not… weird. Really, it’s not. It’s just that sometimes the 118 asks too many questions, and sometimes there’s just no good (or clear or logical) way to explain.

Exhibit A: How Buck ended up in Eddie’s bed during a sleepover (and how he’s been sleeping there most nights since).

Or: Buck and Eddie comfort each other with cuddles, hugs, and kisses (platonically—or so they think).
