Alex held his gaze, heart pounding, pulse hot in his ears. He wanted to understand. He really did. But all he could feel in that moment was utter humiliation, and betrayal—of being held at arm’s length yet again.
He downed the rest of his champagne in one sharp swallow and set the glass aside.

Alex stared at him for a moment before throwing his head back and laughing. Hearing Henry say bitch in his posh accent was easily the funniest thing Alex had heard in weeks.
Grinning, Alex took Henry’s hand and gave it a firm shake.
“Pleasure to meet you, Henry. I’m Alex. My need to be liked and sheer stubbornness can make me an overbearing asshole.”
Henry’s smile widened. “Well, Alex,” he said, his tone light, “I think we’re going to be good friends.”

The caller, the surrogate's mother, hurriedly explained that her daughter's water had broken, and they had just arrived at the hospital. Alex took some further details before hanging up the phone, his hands trembling as he turned to Henry.
“Okay, Henry, it’s time to move,” Alex said, his voice brisk but laced with tension.
“Alex,” Henry’s voice broke through, quiet but firm. Alex turned to see Henry sitting on the edge of the bed, his face pale and his eyes glistening with unshed tears. Shame clouded his expression, and his hands were clenched tightly in his lap.
“Hey,” Alex said, softening his tone as he stepped closer. “Baby, it’s going to be okay, but we need to get to the hospital now—”
“I can’t,” Henry interrupted, his voice cracking. He looked away, his tears finally spilling over. “Alex, I can’t do this. I’m so sorry, but I can’t.”
