Jason stared at the trees beside him, the fields, the endless stretch of roads. “I think…” he started, slowly, words like thick honey in his throat. “I think I’m really tired, Roy.”
Silence stretched across the phone line, only interrupted by Roy’s quiet breaths. It wasn’t an awkward silence. It was an understanding silence. It was a ‘I’ve been exactly where you are and it’s scaring me’ silence.
“Jaybird,” he said, still so casual, “are you at your place right now? I was thinking, what with Lian a little sick, we can all come round and have some Thai. Sound like a plan?”
Jason ran a hand across his face, knew he had to say it now before he backed out. “Tell her… tell her Uncle Jay says he wishes her a goodnight sleep.”

Summary
By midnight, all the papers are in order. Bureaucracy moves quickly when you have enough money to throw at the right people. Takashi’s guardians sign him away like he’s a used car they don’t want anymore and arrange a time to drop off all of his possessions, and that’s it.
Shuuichi is no longer an only child.
“He’ll be your responsibility,” his father says on the ride home, as if he’s not talking to a teenager who shouldn’t even be responsible for himself, let alone a five-year-old.
Shuuichi nods anyway. Takashi is asleep against his side, a heavy reminder. Shuuichi will do whatever he has to. He’ll be whatever he needs to be.
He promised Takashi he would keep the monsters away, and that’s what he’s going to do.

“Aldercapt,” Ignis says slowly, so that his voice won’t break, “has no living heirs.”
“Don’t see how that’s a problem,” Noct mutters in a low, sullen voice. Ignis does his best to ignore it, to go on:
“A succession crisis is the last thing Niflheim needs, and what affects Niflheim will affect us all. He needs a marriage—” Ignis pauses, licking his lips. When he glances toward the king, he sees that the king is watching him. He intends to use Occtis as bait. He's said as much to his face. They are not friends. They are not comrades. They are barely allies, and most days, the ice-cold silence between them makes even that label seem deeply laughable. He is treating Occtis like a threat, like a stick of blackpowder that might explode at any moment.
It's not inaccurate. Not on the logistical level, obviously. His father and brother could be planning anything with his heart; Occtis wouldn't damn well know. But it's not inaccurate on the personal level, either. It's more accurate than Sir Julien really seems to understand.
Exploding sounds violent, and dangerous, and warm. It might be nice to find some way to explode.
Occtis Tachonis is in dire need of a distraction.
