God gave her everything she asked for, everything she had tried so hard to keep down inside herself. But God has a strange sense of humour — and an even stranger idea of love.

    Summary

The spell on top of the stack was faded. The inner sigil was smudged, the paper yellowed with age. It must have been from nearly a decade ago, and yet Coco recognized it immediately. Agott clearly did, too: she delicately separated the top page from the rest of the quire and looked down at the lines. Even sitting next to her, Coco could tell that the old spellwork was confident: it was the work of an apprentice, certainly, but the magic was assured nonetheless. Coco remembered—oh, she remembered it like the memory had been inked into her thoughts—sitting with Agott on a stone ledge at Silver Eve before disaster struck.

Agott and Coco know each other too well. It’s been a long time.

    Summary

Something, equal parts wariness and weariness, stirs in Olruggio’s eyes whenever Qifrey makes some reference to the future — when he indirectly promises a tomorrow, a next week, an ‘after your commissions are done’. It’s the subtlest thing, a flicker, a spark; someone who knew him less well might not pick up on it. But Qifrey knows Olruggio as well as he knows himself, and he can hardly in good conscience begrudge him his flinch of cynicism. Not when it’s wholly his own fault for having put it there.

Fool you once, shame on me. Fool you twice, still shame on me. Fool you thrice… well, if it’s any consolation whatsoever, I was fooling myself most of all.
    -- -- --
The night Qifrey returns to the atelier for good after his wandering days — old promises kept, new promises made.

Ink flows steady, lines take flight,
A paper bridge across the night.
Bound in folds of quiet care,
To tell the words I cannot share.

    Summary

Every year, without fail, an ivory envelope, decorated with blue ribbons at its corners, would appear at the doorstep of his atelier. He would retrieve it from the ground after it announced itself by dropping itself with a soft yet dramatic thud on the floor. The inside would be more intricate than its envelope, lines of golden lace lining the sides, ending at its corners, as his named stared up at him in calligraphic black. At the times he was awake, Olruggio would slip behind him, his warmth like a fire on a cool winter’s day.

“Another one?” He would ask, lingering behind Qifrey slightly.

“He sends one every year,” Qifrey would reply.

For his own reasons few know, including the sender, Qifrey ignores the invitation he gets every year to the Crescent Star Ball. Until this year when he's finally persuaded by his apprentices.
