Summary
Arthur knew from the moment he woke up that it was going to be one of those days, the same moment he opened his eyes to greet the unchanging black haze of the world and didn’t feel the sliver of sunlight that usually wormed its way between the gap in the drapes.
These days, he had the privilege of rising much later, unless a client’s only workable window of time was in the ungodly hours of morning, which—thankfully—was a rare occurrence. If he stirred in the middle of the night, nightmares were the likely culprit, be they his own or John’s or, on nights when the universe saw fit to add a larger dash of turbulence into their comparatively calmer lives, both.
But there was no light. No birds singing incessantly. Before sunrise, then. And it was another moment later that he realized what had awoken him. Or, in this case, what hadn’t?
Everything ached.

Summary
The attack on the Northern Water Tribe goes differently, Aang and the ocean spirit don’t destroy the entire Fire Nation fleet, only most of them.
Zhao escapes, taking Sokka and a few other Water Tribe men as prisoners. Knowing Sokka is traveling with the Avatar he gets sent to Zhao’s “special prison camp” that is hidden near the Earth Kingdom colonies.
Sokka gets a taste of the real war, not the war that he thinks he knows from traveling with the Avatar. While Zhao’s prisoner, he struggles to survive the inhuman conditions. Alone and thought to be dead, he feels himself slowly losing hope.
Seeing a familiar face brings back his hope, even if that face is the scarred Prince of the Fire Nation.
Sokka and Zuko come together to survive and end up depending on each other for a lot more than they ever thought possible.

Summary
“And as much as I believe that,” John begins and Arthur waits until he continues for the next pull at the cigarette, “you’re sure there’s nothing else that’s sending you out here like a brooding teenager?”
Arthur nearly splutters, turning his head toward John for the full wide-eyed effect, “Brooding? Am I brooding?”
John makes a noncommittal noise, makes sure to ruffle the sleeve of his coat as he motions, “It was the closest word I could come to, so yes. I think you are. For the entire day you have been, in fact.”
