Summary
They’re Art and Patrick, Patrick and Art, fire and ice.
They know exactly where the other is without looking, know they can trust each other implicitly to be exactly where they need.
They move in a perfect harmony, until suddenly they don’t.
There’s a wet snapping noise, followed by the skidding of clay, and suddenly the thud of Patrick hitting the ground from behind Art. The ball bounces off-side, forgotten by both as Art spins on his heel.
At first he thinks, just like so many times before, that Patrick’s tripped over and he’s laughing to himself, or he’s playing it up to make Art laugh.
But as he sees him, sees the way he tries to push himself up from where he’s lying flat and fails, a strangled noise escapes him as he slumps back down into the court.
Something is wrong.
He drops his racquet and dashes to Patrick’s side, dropping to his knees as he grabs Patrick’s hand.
Patrick’s face is screwed up, his breath hitching in his throat. The umpire is calling for the medic, but Art isn’t listening, too focused on his best friend.
“Patrick. Pat. Open your eyes, look at me, you’re okay, you’re okay.”
