"He's my dad," Liv says, suddenly, looking back at the officer. "You said you wanted to take me down to the station to call my parents, well, there's no need now, because he's my dad and he's here, so."
"Is that right?" the officer sneers at her, the grip on her wrist not loosening at all, and Robert reacts before he thinks it through.
"It is, actually," he says, stepping closer to the two and letting the frustration of the morning seep in to his voice, "and I'd love to know what the hell you think you're doing manhandling my daughter like that?"

"What the hell are you talking about?"
"Well, I mean, people don't cheat unless there's something wrong in their relationship. Maybe John isn't satisfying you, or—"
"Oh my god will you please shut up."
"You're the one who asked me for advice."
He's at the farm again. On Robert's day off. Mackenzie's in his overalls fixing some fence, had listened rather politely actually while Aaron ranted at him about what an idiot he's been. As much as he hates Mackenzie's input, he's glad to have someone he can talk to about everything.
"Aaron, you've got to stop asking me what I think if you're just going to ignore everything I say anyway."
Aaron gives him a look.
"No I don't."

Aaron will say it later, and no one will believe him, but he knew then, when he saw Mack, that something was terribly, terribly wrong.
“It’s Robert, isn’t it?” Aaron managed, a wobble to his voice he couldn’t control as he spoke.
“Yeah, mate,” Mackenzie’s voice was soft, and sympathetic, in that way everyone’s voice tended to get when they were about to deliver bad news, and Aaron hated it. “It’s Robert.”

Robert looks away for a moment, takes a sip of his beer, and decides that he might as well be honest with a total stranger, now that he has finally learned how to be honest with himself.
"I'm not really good at it. Not anymore." His therapist would be so proud.
"You? Now, that's hard to believe." The man smiles, a little sexy smirk that feeds the little flames licking at Robert's insides. "I'm Aaron."
There's a short, cold spike of doubt shooting through Robert's skull, a way too familiar fear circling in his veins, his thoughts racing to what happened, what could happen, and–
"Robert."
He's safe. He's abroad and he can't get to him.

They deserved a change in scenery. Somewhere their husbands didn’t have a sway. The road stretched out before him, the midday sun intruding through the clouds just off the course. He could take them anywhere. He could keep driving, the hum of the engine their only companion. Robert would wake up, and they’d be someplace nice, somewhere with a beach or a rocky coastline.
It's Seb's eighth birthday, and Aaron can't help but think about what happened to him at that age. With a sleeping Robert in the passenger seat, he could take them anywhere. But Robert isn't his, not anymore, and Aaron is hurting.

"Well, hang on," Aaron calls, "It'll take you forever to walk up to the farm with him, and in this heat, you'll be passed out in no time!"
Robert scoffs at him, a cheeky smile growing on his face. "I wasn't planning on walking," he says, before grabbing hold of the saddle, hitching his leg up to the stirrup and heaving himself up and over the horse. He shifts slightly in the seat, getting comfortable and Aaron shifts in his seat as his jeans grow tighter at the sight.
Robert looks… majestic, yet sinful, and Aaron's mouth drops open when Robert visibly squeezes his thighs around the horse, guiding it to move. "I'll be back," he calls over his shoulder, before coaxing the horse into a trot and riding off towards the farm.

"They didn't just jump you, did they?" Aaron asks Robert, as the pieces seem to fall into place, making him so much angrier than he'd been before. He assumed there'd been a scuffle; a few punches on both sides, maybe? But this…?
The hammer, the cable-ties, Aaron's wasted call out, and the fake cattle-market alibi Sam had tried to spin through Lydia—this was all so much worse than Aaron realised.

On the way home from the hospital, Aaron worries about Robert, and he’s desperate to know what really happened when Cain and Sam jumped him. There’s just the small matter of the burning hay bales they need to put out first.

Vic’s box room, Home Farm, Moira’s couch once or twice. The Woolpack. Aaron’s bedroom in the Woolie, every bathroom in the Woolie, the front room after closing and lights out at the Woolie, the basement, the hallway, the trash area round back that smells like worse than slurry.
Very rarely does Robert turn down sex with Aaron. When he does, it’s always solely for Aaron’s benefit.

Aaron wanted to visit, but between the farm and keeping his mother’s nerves in check, he wasn’t able to. He rang the hospital, but the staff simply told him that Robert didn’t want to take any calls. That sent him into free fall, plagued by memories of denied visits and divorce papers. He was being cut off. Robert was leaving him all over again.

After Robert suggests turning himself in to the police, Aaron digs out his and Robert's old wedding rings. They're a symbol for all the things he hasn't been able to say, and their renewed commitment to the future they desperately want.

Robert had whispered again, a little brokenly, wandering around the blurry flat, terrified he might stumble across a corpse, before finally grabbing his phone, and his jacket and stumbling out the front door, nearly braining himself on the stairs before lurching into what remained of the fast-waning day.
Half-blind, his only saviour had been the reluctant Joe Tate, and if every minute spent away from Aaron had felt like one big prolonged panic-attack that still left him breathless, even now, with Aaron beside him once more, then that was his business, nobody else's.
