Sheffield is only just waking up as they pave their journey through the streets of the city centre, music thrumming through their ears, feet light against the paving and breaths steady.
There’s a ladybug clinging to the black of their running shorts when they stop at a crossing to wait for the lights to change. They reach down with gentle fingers until the vibrant insect climbs onto a clipped fingernail to make itself at home for the time being.
They’re so distracted by its reluctance to leave the safety of their fingers that they don’t register the faintly out of control cyclist running the red light at the other end of the crossing.

The figure is no longer found upon the flat roof when Yaz next seeks them out.
Instead, after scanning the courtyard between side streets and residential housing, Yaz starts at the sight of florid eyes in the opposite corner. Each blink they take casts her in shadow for milliseconds at a time.
Talking of shadows; cast against the grubby, graffitied brickwork opposite, the figure bares antlers. Perfectly formed and perfectly striking, the only thing they lack is actual presence. The shape shifts into the light slightly; those horns and stag-like features do not show.

“Back to work again?” Hakim poses, arms folded over his well-worn grey dressing gown. He raises a hand to rub sleep from his eyes and Yaz momentarily envies the way a good night’s rest softens his features where hers are hard and worn from a lack thereof.
“Yeah,” Yaz answers, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear. “I told you; this case is huge. It’s going to take some time.”
She’s only half lying, after all.
The sleeping bag sprawled across the blue linoleum of the TARDIS floor mocks her from three blocks away.

Dennie is halfway through a rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody with Bill — blonde hair catching at her sunglasses and billowing past the open window in swathes — when Yaz takes her opportunity.
Unsheathing her camera from her rucksack, she uncaps the lens and captures Dennie’s open joy in motion. She’s beautiful like this, pearly whites ever-present and set against lips which refuse to let up from a breezy, youthful grin.
There’s no wonder she has so many avid followers — it’s as though every shot, every moving image; every moment with Dennie is sunshine personified.
