Jay thinks of it like this: their small family, cobbled together through sweat and tears and missing pieces hastily found and thrown out and found again. The way Jungwon will smile at him for cooking his favorite half-medium steak, the pieces of laundry littered across the too-large living room (mostly Jake’s and his), and the funny way Niki clings to him in his sleep, like the younger brother he never had.
Maybe that’s why Jay tries so hard, he’s afraid that someone will look at them and point out that their group might not have been the right fit after all.

Everything seemed frozen still for a moment, no one quite sure how to react, and then -
"San Lang!" That tiny little body was up and moving quicker than a blur, and Hua Cheng barely had time to kneel before it rammed into his legs. "San Lang! You're here!"
"Dianxia?" He asked, hardly able to believe it, and curled his hand around the back of his skull protectively when he felt him nod. The child wriggled closer, burying himself into the folds of Hua Cheng's robes, and he was so small. It was a miracle he hadn't tripped while running over to him, with the way he was drowning in clothes made for an adult. "Dianxia, what happened?"
"There was a scary monster," his tiny little husband informed him, pulling away to grace him with a look of utmost seriousness, and if Hua Cheng still had a working heart it would be working double time right now. "It was gonna eat me, San Lang!"
(Or: Xie Lian is turned into a child and Hua Cheng is living his best afterlife.)
