Summary
"We were so worried, we heard you—" Ragatha starts, and then looks up. She meets Jax's gaze dead-on, and goes silent. Tears brim in the corner of her eye. Her hand flies up to cover her mouth. He can't tell if the look on her face is relief or fear.
Gangle's staring at him like she's seen a ghost. Pomni slowly raises to her feet, brows furrowed. She winces as every movement jars her wavering form.
Cowered on the floor, panting, confused and disoriented, with everyone standing above him, taller than him… it reminds Jax of something deeply unpleasant. They're all staring at him. They're all seeing him.
Jax knows they're not going to like what they see.
His breath quickens until his head is spinning, and he feels like he's going to vomit. He forces himself upwards with a frustrated cry, swaying in place, and then turns and bolts towards his room as fast as he can.
"NO!" Pomni screams.
(or: pomni pulls jax back from the brink.)

His scowl falls lopsided, buckling under the strain of her question. He lets out a frustrated growl, runs a hand down his face.
“...Nothing, Pomni. Forget it.”
“You can talk to me,” Pomni reminds him.
“There’s nothing to talk about.”
“Okay…” Pomni gives a hesitant nod, not wanting to feed any further into his instincts to dig his heels in and deny the obvious. “Then talk to me about nothing.”
In another life, Jax's final attempt to reach out to Pomni goes a little differently.

“Are you afraid you’ll dream about Jax?” The line of Pomni’s shoulders wilts. Kinger gives her a moment before saying, “I dream about Queenie.”
Pomni has to clear her throat, pressurize her words to force them past the narrowing in her chest.
“We weren’t like you and Queenie.”
“Sure, but closeness isn’t measured solely by something as binary as married or not. Especially in here.”
Pomni shifts her weight, eyes finding her feet.
“He wouldn’t let me get close to him. Not until it was already too…” Her voice, traitorous, wobbles. “If…if I’d tried harder. Reached out to him more, or reached out to him sooner. I knew he’d been toeing the line. But I kept thinking that it would be better if I let him…if I let him come to me when he was ready.” Her breath hitches. “I should have known. I should have known he’d never be the one to approach me. Not after the first time. I should have known that going to him first was the only way I could…I could…”
She can’t get the words out. Kinger lets her silence hang for just long enough before, ever gentle, ever true, like a knife performing a mercy killing, he says
“…Save him?”

In an instant, Stolas steadied his breath, dropped his hand, put up his masks and his walls and his denials. “I fucking hate when you do that.”
“Do what?” Stolas blinked at him, but Blitz was still looking at the motel sign.
“Where you pretend everything is okay to appease me,” Blitz muttered. “You’re clearly upset and bothered and hurting and you have been for fucking weeks but every time I ask, you shut me out and pretend everything is fine. You go from Stolas to Prince Stolas in the blink of an eye and I just… I hate that you think you have to do that or if it’s just a habit from… all the bullshit. I just hate it, Stols.
