Summary
The merman doesn't make a sound, but as Eddie cuts away more and more of the net, he seems to relax a tiny bit. Those sharp eyes never leave Eddie's though.
"My name's Eddie. Do you have a name?"
No reply.
"Your scales are…really pretty," Eddie continues. "I bet they shine in the sun."
At that, a small noise escapes the merman, a quiet trill.
"Oh? You like compliments, huh?" Eddie smiles. "So you can understand me."
"Some," the merman croaks. Weakly, he holds up a hand, brings his thumb and forefinger less than an inch apart, indicating small.
*****
To most people, merfolk are dangerous beasts, evil, hunted down and their scales sold for high prices. To Eddie, they're kind and fascinating creatures from his uncle's old stories, and something he's longed to see for years.
When Captain Creel drags a captured merman on board Eddie's ship, he gets his wish.
Steve is the most beautiful thing he's ever seen, and Eddie's going to free him or die trying.

Summary
"I don't sleep." Steve says in reply, instead of the million other things he wishes to say and beg of him.
"Ever?"
Eddie replied. Steve looked over to him after collecting the courage to, expecting more fear and disappointment, another thing that makes him less human and unrelatable to the experience. Instead, he finds sadness on his boy's face. Eddie looks... sad, sad for him, sad for Steve. And in that moment, Steve wanted nothing more then to relate, to sleep. Not to cease bordem or escape from this hell-ish life he's living, no, Steve yearned for the ability to sleep because he wanted the ability to dream.
If Steve could dream, he could dream of a world where this worked, where he and Eddie could be together. Eddie dreamed of Steve, Steve wanted to dream of Eddie.
Eddie stared back at Steve, expression full of wonder and curiosity, Steve had to look away.
Steve could not dream of Eddie. Eddie should not dream of Steve.

Summary
Dr. Eddie Munson buried his secrets beneath the sterile, unforgiving glare of Hawkins Memorial Hospital. To the board, he was a brilliant, if eccentric, ER resident who practically lived in his scrubs, survived on a terrifying amount of black coffee. To the night shift staff, he was the guy who willingly volunteered for the grueling 24-hour shift rotations that left everyone else hollowed out.The truth was far simpler: eternity was agonizingly boring, and the relentless chaos of the trauma bay was the only thing loud enough to drown out the monotony of his immortal life.
