Choso had two rules that kept his tattoo studio running smoothly and his blood pressure at a manageable level.
He did not tattoo drunk people. Alcohol thinned the blood, ruined clean lines, and, most importantly, made clients impossible to keep still.
And then, there was a deeply personal second rule: Zenin Naoya was, under absolutely no circumstances, allowed inside the shop.

Oh, like a police officer? she asked, smoothing down the cowlicks at the back of his head.
No-no-no. Lin Ling jabbed his chubby toddler finger at the comic book spread out in front of him. He did it aggressively. To make a point. Because even at that age Lin Ling hated being misunderstood. Jab. Jab. Jab. Pointer finger hitting dead center on the page, blotting out the white-cloaked man shining brilliantly among a rising tide of shadows. Like this. Like him! A real hero!
It seemed so obvious to him back then. Heroes were good—full stop. They saved people; they stood up for the weak. They helped whoever and wherever they could. Everyone should’ve strived to be a hero, because really, what else could you possibly want to do with your life?
Now, at twenty-one, knee-deep in a heap of scrap metal, Lin Ling wipes a grease-stained hand over his forehead and thinks he should’ve applied for the police academy after all.

Zoro, shirtless, glistening, sweaty, and deeply homicidal, growled like a man personally offended by gravity. “Maybe you’re just talking too much.”
“Or maybe,” Sanji said, kicking off the railing and twisting in the air like some kind of gymnastic demon prince, landing with a little click of his heel, “you’re scared I’ll win.”
Zoro scoffed. “You? Win? In your fucking dreams, curlybrow.”
Sanji’s eyebrow twitched. That was it. That was war.
“One round,” Sanji said. “Winner gets one favor. Anything they want.”
In which Zoro loses a spar, Sanji wins a favor, and both of them lose any semblance of sanity or heterosexuality.
