“S’too bad,” Steve says thoughtfully. He puts his hands back into the bucket, plucks Bucky’s underwear out of the sudsy wad of fabric down at the bottom. “If you’d gotten some of Erskine’s juice, maybe you’d still be taller than me.”
It does the trick: Bucky’s eyes flash. “I am still taller than you,” he says, threatening. Steve shrugs. “I am,” Bucky says, louder, and stands up, dripping water and soap.

Steve had always wondered why it was geese - loud, annoying, generally unromantic creatures - which were the animals that led humans to their soulmates. He’d always thought that a more romantic creature would make more sense: a dove, a lovebird, maybe something delicate and soft like a deer.
Well, now he knew why it was geese: there was no escaping a goose. They were the peak of evolution when it came to harassing people into going places. They were fucking annoying.

The voice in his head is no longer recognizable. It used to sound like his drill sergeant from boot camp before the war—keep that gun up, Barnes!—and then overseas it had sounded more like Steve. Stay alive, damn it. For the longest time, for decades, it had sounded like Zola’s voice. Even after new Hydra leaders broke him to their will, Zola’s voice had remained the loudest, the most infuriating, the most self-satisfied.
Ready to comply, Soldier?
