Summary
Faith whistles low, keeps her face neutral, though she can’t control the way her heart speeds up at the sight of the wound, the way there’s this sudden urgent pressure at the back of her skull when she takes it in. It’s worse than she thought. It must hurt like hell.
“You should see the other guy,” Buffy jokes, a little strained, and that’s when Faith realizes how long she’s been staring, how she’s reached out absently to touch Buffy.
She snatches her hand back out of the air, shoves it in her pockets. “Don’t think you left enough of him behind to look at, B. Let’s get you home, we’ll clean that up.”
“Your place,” Buffy says, instead.

“So, I kind of hate mini-golf,” Buffy admits.
“I gathered,” Faith says. “If this was you trying to hide it, you did a lousy job.”
“Yeah, I’m— I’m sorry,” Buffy says. “This was nice of you. The problem is all me.”
“Well, at least you admit it,” Faith grumbles, trying to conjure up a smile. Buffy squeezes her arm, weakly. “But seriously, how does this even happen to someone? It’s putt-putt for godssakes. Who hurt you?”
It’s a joke, when she says it, but Faith knows enough about Buffy by now to know there’s a chance at a serious answer. Once the possibility occurs to her, Faith bites her lip. She’s expecting to hear Angel's name trip out past Buffy’s lips, all breathless regret and tortured longing.
She’s not ready for Buffy to take a deep breath and say, “My mom’s boyfriend. Ted.”

“Don’t go yet,” Buffy says quietly, and Faith’s shoulders slump.
“I’ve gotta be in Chicago by morning. Rona’s expecting me.”
“Will can send you by teleportation circle in the A.M. Stay the night.” Faith closes her eyes and takes a breath. Dangerous words out of Buffy’s mouth. Could be innocuous; anyone hearing them might think they’re innocent.
Faith knows better. Nothing about her and Buffy in a room together is ever innocent.

“So, the breakup must have been pretty bad then, I’m guessing,” Buffy says, in that tone that she uses when she wants to sound casual about something she’s been obsessing over.
Faith raises her eyebrows, glancing over at Buffy. “As far as I know, you’re still together. As much as you ever were, anyway — I never really got all the details.”
Of all the things that have changed, this has stayed exactly as Faith remembers. Buffy doesn’t talk to Faith about her life. Especially not her boyfriends. Not any more than she absolutely has to.
“No, not me and Spike,” Buffy says, pushing off the railing and crossing the gap between them to sit down next to Faith. She’s so close Faith can smell that stupid, fruity body-spray she loves. Cherry blossoms. She’s so close Faith can’t help but feel a pang of regret about it, the way the ashtray smell of her bad habit is going to smother that nice, clean scent. “Me and you.”

“Get our rocks off at the same time. Within ten feet of the sigil. Once we—” Faith stumbles over the words, not exactly sure how to say ‘fingerbang each other until we scream,’ but knowing that phrasing will not go over well, says “have our big bang, or bangs I guess, the spell will absorb that energy. And use it to close the portal.” Magic is fucking weird. But magic made her a slayer, and magic is going to make it possible for her to get her hands on Buffy, so Faith can’t complain too much.
