“Eggsy,” he lies, staring the man right in the eyes, defiant even though he can barely hear his own voice over how loudly his heart is beating, rabbit fast in his chest.
For a moment, they stare at each other, and he’s certain that he’s been caught in his lie. But then the man smiles at him.

Qifrey’s formal robes were a piece of art in their own right. Bankrolled by Beldaruit as a final graduation gift, they were a pale smoke, nearly white, and from what Olruggio could remember the golden embroidery was a sight to see. It vined along the bottom hem and wrapped organically around his throat, and when Olly had seen them for the first time he hadn’t known what to say. Qifrey had stepped forward to speak to him and he’d simply stared until gently reminded that he was still, in fact, capable of speech.
(Truthfully, just an elaborate set piece to put both dads in formal robes for an evening.)

Wei Ying does one of her tiny private smiles that seem reserved for moments like these, glancing up from the corner of her eye to where Lan Wangji sits. Amused. “Did you, now?” she says coyly. “Interesting. What other things have you thought about me, Lan Zhan? What secrets of mine must I so carefully guard for the future, must I covet?”
Lan Wangji decides to play along.
“Ah,” she says. “There is one thing.”
It works remarkably well. Wei Ying straightens up in her chair, eyes suddenly narrowing with suspicion. “Do you know something?” she pokes.
A smile twitches at Lan Wangji’s lips. “I know…”
Leaning forward encouragingly, Wei Ying blinks quickly. “Go on.”
“I know,” she murmurs. “That Wei Ying is good.”
