Summary
“Your father and your uncle, they fight. They don’t always get along. But you two, my Zuko and Azula, you are the light of the Fire Nation.” Ursa squeezes their shoulders gently. “When your uncle is Fire Lord, and your cousin Lu Ten is next in line, you will be important players in the royal court. There will be people who will try to divide you. You Must Not Let Them.” She emphasizes every word, looking at them seriously. “You are siblings, and you love each other. Promise me that you’ll always look out for each other.”
“I promise,” Zuko says, looking at Azula. She feels the words deep inside her. Something sacred.
“I promise,” Azula says.

Summary
“I wonder if they’ll be a bender.” All of his carefree attitude seemed to drain out of Aang; his shoulders drooped, his smile vanished, his eyes unfocused. Katara set down her cup of tea and grabbed his hand that still pressed against her stomach. The child inside of her shifted, as though reaching for the touch of their father, causing Aang to smile sadly. “I should want them to be an airbender.”
“You don’t?” Katara asked, confused.
The traditions of the Southern Water Tribe were taught to their children, but so were the tenets of the Air Nomads. Their daughter followed Aang’s vegetarian diet and would sit by his side as he meditated. Yes, she would shift about and peek up at him, but she was an undeniable daddy’s girl that hung onto his every word. Bumi, their wild boy, loved stories of his father’s exploits from a hundred years ago, but he was a Water Tribe boy through-and-through.
She wanted for Aang to have another person in his life—that wasn’t a bison or a flying lemur—that could use the element of air.

Summary
The spirits danced along in a myriad of colors against the sky about ten years after the end of the war.
“They disappeared, just a slow trickle, before they were all gone, nowhere to be seen,” his Gran Gran had told him once when he was child as the hearth of coals radiated heat towards where their family was bundled close together to keep warm in the winter chill. “They're mourning us and the slow decline of who we once were. We used to dance and sing with the spirits, they were so beautiful.” Sokka had closed his eyes that night and tried to dream about what the spirits could look like.
Never had he dreamed of what it truly looked like.

Summary
Aang’s chest had been tight with worry for weeks now, so tight it felt like he was carrying a heavy weight everywhere he went, and he knew Katara felt it too, the same quiet concern etched into the soft lines around her eyes when she watched their little boy.
Everyone they spoke to, parents who’d raised multiple children, older couples who’d seen it all kept telling them it was normal. “Kids suck their thumbs until they’re five, even older sometimes,” they’d say with gentle smiles, trying to ease their minds. “Bumi’s only four, there’s nothing to fret over.”
But Aang couldn’t shake the feeling. He knew his son, knew how bright, how lively, how energetic he’d always been, even as a tiny baby. This wasn’t just a harmless habit. It was different, deeper, something that twisted at his heart every time he looked at Bumi.

Summary
“I’m almost done! It’s just one sleeve!”
“No, Baba!”
“Are you losing an argument to our one-year-old son again?”
Aang turned to see Katara watching the two of them from bed, her voice only lightly touched by sleep. The look in her eyes was pure love.
“I’m not losing, I’m—yes.”
Now that Bumi is over a year old, Katara and Aang decide it's high time they took a trip to the South Pole to properly introduce him to the rest of his family.
Everything goes perfectly to plan. All Aang has to do is stop imagining the many different ways a rambunctious toddler could fall off a flying bison.

Summary
Aang feels all stupid and mushy for the tenth time this week. He asks her to stop for a second, hugs her warm and safe in his lap and Kya rolls her eyes, good-natured, fists curled against his chest.
“You’re really good at that,” he says, running his index finger over the starlit patterns she’s given him. Of all the ink on him, hers is by the far the best.
“I know.”
“Ah, you have your mother’s humility.”
Eight-year-old Kya really likes filling in Aang's tattoos with markers. He really likes being her dad. He likes the love of it all, of adoring Katara and making dinner and laughing and spinning.

Summary
Katara’s all strawberry gloss and starlight. She turns him inside-out and backwards, head tipping back before his heels; turns him red with sparse, dirty words and that I-could-fuck-you-up smirk.
It's just a lot. It’s been a while since anyone touched Aang, spun him holy in a bed and left him happy-dizzy-reeling. And he didn’t think about it — didn’t have to think about it — until her, until her fingers grazed petals and it made his fist turn white in his pocket.
Aang tells Katara about his hometown and he's very dumbly in love with her, so, of course, the conversation ends in someone's bedroom.

Summary
Iroh blinked as the realization dawned on him. It shouldn’t be a surprise, as he cared for both boys in front of him—but he wasn’t sure if he could say it out loud. If he should. He’d said the words to Lu Ten before, but not to Zuko, never to Zuko; because Zuko wasn’t his, and it shouldn’t be his place to say those words to him.
Though, he doubted Zuko ever heard those words coming from Iroh’s brother.

"I think," the Fire Lord starts saying, "that the palace is haunted."
"Huh," the Avatar, who is lounging on the couch in the Fire Lord's study, is the one who responds. He pauses twirling marbles with his airbending to look at the man behind the desk. "Okay?" he says, with the question mark audible.
Several palace staff witness the Fire Lord and the Avatar do a little ghost investigation.

Hakoda realizing Aang is, in fact, a kid, and that's kind of fucked up
>
Hakoda's light must've gotten to him though, as he twitched after a few seconds. Hakoda had a brief twinge of guilt for accidentally waking him up, but he was pulled away from that as he watched the Avatar sit up. As he did, he blinked blearily at Hakoda a few times before he brought his hands up to rub at his eyes.
His hands were in little fists, rubbing at his eyes in that little circular motion, and Hakoda thought
Oh.
That's a child.
He rubbed his eyes the way Hakoda's kids used to, the way children did before they realized the heels of their hands did the job far better. He was small, and thin, and suddenly so fragile looking, like a baby deercat.

Aang wasn’t sure when he started crying. He wasn’t sure when his friends joined him on the balcony, either. But when they all wrapped their arms around him in a massive, ridiculous, everything-he-could-have-ever-wanted group hug…
They were Aang’s present. His friends grounded him, keeping him in the now. And yet, if he opened his eyes?
Aang suspected he would fly.

Summary
Zuko’s eyes widened, the blood draining from his face. Mai never cried. “What? What happened?!”
“Oh, I don’t know,” Azula said, shrugging nonchalantly, though her eyes glinted with a malicious mirth. “But if I had to guess… Maybe it had something to do with the royal advisors talking about what a shame it is that someone as dull and plain as her is going to be the next Fire Lady of our great country -”
Zuko didn’t wait for his sister to finish, turning on his heel and sprinting back down the hallway that led out of the palace and into the main courtyard.
(Mai will always be his fire lily. If only Zuko knew how to tell her that. Young!Maiko fluff with a dash of hurt/comfort.)
