He paused and turned to face his merchling. Wylan was glaring at him, arms crossed and jaw clenched. He was a picture of defiance, and Kaz felt a familiar warmth spread through his chest. Wylan’s eyes darted back and forth between Kaz’s and Kaz knew he was waiting to see if he would take the bait.

“Sweet boy,” Henry murmurs. There’s a glow in Alex’s chest at the soft words. “I’m going to hold your book, and you’re going to kneel here and read for me. Do you understand?”
