Summary
Mickey makes his way up the steps, quiet in his boots because he knows the younger kids must be sleeping by now. The old wood is icy, but he knows his way around. Snow is just starting to fall, and the grass is slowly turning white.
He knocks on the door quietly, just enough for Ian to hear in the living room or the kitchen. He knows Mickey’s coming back; he wouldn’t have gone to bed without him.
So when Fiona opens the door instead, it’s a bit of a surprise.
“Oh,” she says, tired. “Hey, Mickey.”

Summary
“Why the hell are you here, Ian?”
Mickey’s tone is defeated, and his shoulders barely hold their shape. He’s tired. Exhausted, really. Ian can see that in every line of his body, every curve of his face.
There’s so much that Ian wants to say to him, so much he wants to scream across this phone line connecting them, but he can’t. His head is a mess, in more ways than one, and no matter how fast he tries to parse through his tidal wave of emotions, he can’t figure them out.
He broke up with Mickey. Right?
Only now, he can’t really remember why.
“I don’t know,” Ian says honestly, and hopes it’s enough.
(It’s not.)

Summary
Dully, he wonders if his heart will ever stop pounding; he wonders if the mouthfuls of whiskey will ever stop tasting like the blood he spit at his father, if he can somehow will the cold creeping up through the concrete into his veins to soothe the burn left by the adrenaline that refuses to stop scorching them. He wants to know if he will ever catch his footing again, or if he will stumble perpetually from this night forward, wary of each step, the laces of his shoes permanently untied.
