The stoplight system worked as such: L would do whatever he wanted, and if Light wanted to stop, he would say red, any time. If he wanted to slow down, he would say yellow. Practically, it would be kind of ridiculous to say ‘blue’ instead of ‘yes’ or ‘keep going’, if Light wanted to say that, but, L explained, sometimes he just wanted to check in with Light. To be safe. If L asked for a color and he didn’t get blue, he would assume Light wanted to say red.
That last little caveat was the worst part of the game, by the way. Light did not enjoy having to call blue at all.

The other patron has barely moved since Vasily came in; he has occasionally heard the clink of his cup returning to his saucer, but nothing more, no tapping of fingertips on the tablecloth, no slurping of his tea. And yet the man seems to be aware of Vasily’s eyes on him now, for all that he’s looking away, his attention fixed on the empty corner opposite him. A curving lock of hair, black as a fresh stroke of ink, obscures the sliver of his face that Vasily should be able to see, the steeply angled sunlight making it throw a shadow across his cheek. As Vasily watches, the tip of his pencil hovering above the paper, the man finally moves, raising one broad-palmed hand to smooth the lock of hair back from his forehead.
Thousands of miles from the battlefield of Port Arthur, Ogata, Yuusaku, and Vasily cross paths in St. Petersburg.

Summary
Inside me there are two wolves: One who thinks 310 was the perfect ending for Ogata and one who wishes there were more resolution to Vasily's story. This fic is what happened when I let them fight it out.
Vasily has waited too long to finally determine the winner of their contest, and letting Ogata die here would be too easy, too anticlimactic, like the disappointing thud of an artillery shell that doesn’t detonate.
He gets to decide whether his prey lives or dies, and for now, Ogata must live.

Just for a moment, the light inside his eyes seems to sicken, shifting into something hungry and unwholesome. Base; reptilian. Higasa’s hair pricks up on the back of his neck involuntarily. Then it passes, like a cloud across the sun. Tsurumi peers down at him with the tender concern of a nervous parent, and the professionalism reanimates his various tissues, filling him with the pleasant warmth of being the smartest man in the room.
“Yes, I think it might be for the better,” he says, “Especially if you’re well-accquainted. It helps to build an environment of trust.”
Tsurumi brightens.
“Trust!” He exclaims, taking both of Higasa’s hands in a warm squeeze. “Yes, that’s exactly the thing! I’m sure that we can come to an understanding, we three. In an environment of trust.”
Private Usami's medical exam turns up some highly anomalous results; Tsurumi investigates. Personally.

If he'd killed Yuusaku at Port Arthur, Ogata thinks, their father would have finally acknowledged him. A man as proud and as calculating as Hanazawa Koujirou would never have let his family line wither away so easily, not when he had another potential heir in his back pocket. Ogata would have been adopted as soon as he set foot back on Japanese soil—taught manners and dressed up in a stuffy braided uniform, pinned with all manner of medals and squirreled into a commission that he wasn't even remotely trained for. He's sure of it.
It's right there in his ill-fitting name, Hyakunosuke, clumsy and overwrought for a farm boy, but perfectly appropriate for a back-up son of the Hanazawa family. A second son's name, no less, because Yuusaku has always come first; even before he was ever conceived, the mere possibility that he might one day exist had been enough to keep Ogata shunted behind the spot reserved for him.

The roof of the barracks is the best place to be on nights like this. Most of the soldiers are out drinking or whoring, and the ones left behind are timid or annoying - and most importantly, not willing to climb up here and bother him. It means Ogata can be completely alone for once, his jacket off and folded up beside him with his cap, a cigarette in his mouth as he looks up at the stars.

It had only taken days after returning from Manchuria before they had been posted up to manage the streets. To watch for signs of the neural leprosy. Months of this, but it was a vacation compared to the trenches.
Ogata watches rotted bodies burn and sees Yuusaku overripe.
