Work Text:
The cell phone sat on Bakugou’s desk taunting him and he tightened his grip on the crumpled piece of paper in his hand. Three days, it had been three days since the redhead had left him the phone number that Bakugou was currently threatening to tear in agitation. He had been attempting to send a text since the moment he had received the number but each day that passed made him feel worse and worse about not having done anything about it. He had considered giving the number a call, but the thought of hearing Kirishima’s voice that close to his ear did things to Bakugou he did not want to admit. He crumpled the paper into a ball once more and threw it onto the desk, spinning around in his chair with a groan of agitation. He would give it another try tomorrow.
“So wait,” Kaminari looked up from where he was shaping dough, “you haven’t texted him yet?” Mina let out a derisive laugh from her post at the counter.
“He probably never will, he’s too scared.” She added a lilt to scared giving it a little sing songy tone and turned to stare straight into Bakugou’s scowling face. Neither of these brainless peons had any sense of self preservation, mocking Bakugou to his face, he could kill them.
“Haven’t you fuckers ever heard of waiting three days so you don’t seem desperate?” Bakugou could swear like a sailor and lie like a pirate, and currently he was employing both of those skills to lie through his teeth about his current predicament.
“Oh!” Mina exclaimed looking mock happy. “So you texted yesterday then? Considering that was three days?”
“It’s creepy that you know that you stalker.” Bakugou looked away, the scowl on his face slowly becoming a permanent fixture. Mina opened her mouth, most likely to say something annoying again but a customer interrupted her by appearing at the counter to order. Bakugou turned back to his pastry making with Kaminari who had been strangely silent through that whole encounter.
“Don’t even think about it.” Bakugou warned the moment Kaminari took a breath to speak,
“What? I didn’t say anything.” Kaminari looked up at Bakugou hands raised in innocence. “But I do think you ought to either text him, or let him know you aren’t interested, ‘cause he’s starting to look like a kicked puppy everytime he comes in here.” Bakugou opened his mouth to give a well educated and definitely badass response, but all that came out was, “Shut up”.
Had Kirishima seriously been looking worse these past couple days? Bakugou had been avoiding him in order to avoid what was sure to be an awkward conversation, and Bakugou didn’t do awkward. Yet here he was, in an awkward showdown where he had the reigns and he went and crashed the horse (could you crash an animal? Well Bakugou had)
“Hey Mina!” A familiar voice cut through Bakugou’s train of thought and his head shot up to the clock. Crap, he had lost track of time and there was shiity hair, hair extra shitty today for some reason. “Hi Kirishima!” Mina exclaimed putting extra emphasis on his name as though Bakugou didn’t already know he was here.
“I’m actually going on break right now but Bakugou can help you!” Mina turned around giving Bakugou a not so subtle thumbs up and heading for the break room. He was going to kill her, he would find a way to fit her into the tiny work ovens and bake her at 375 degrees for 15-20 minutes , or until well done. He brushed flour off his hands and onto his apron and made his way over to the sink. There was no one behind Kirishima so he made sure to take his time washing his hands, being extra thorough.
“Whaddya want?” Bakugou attempted to keep his cool and seem unaffected by both Kirishima’s intoxicating aroma and the rather unfortunate situation they were in.
“Same as usual!” Kirishima’s smile seemed less wide than usual, showing less of his dangerously sharp teeth, and suddenly Bakugou couldn’t stand to look at him. This was his fault, Bakugou was the idiot who couldn’t make up his mind and here Kirishima was, obviously upset all because Bakugou had ignored his dumb phone number. Bakugou began reaching into the spare change tray as usual when Kirishima slammed his money down on the counter. “I have the 27 cents actually.” Kirishima sheephisly pushed the money towards Bakugou who silently accepted in and went to work on the usual black coffee.
“One shitty coffee for one shitty haired customer.” Bakugou gave the comment no bite and Kirishima gave him a genuine laugh before thanking him and taking his coffee to a table.
“I wonder what he’s thinking.” Mina whispered to Kaminari as the two watched Bakugou attempt to glare a hole into the break room table.
“Probably about how he’s oh so crushed that his crush is right over there and he’s too chicken to say anything to him” Kaminari whispered back.
“You know I can hear you!” Bakugo yelled turning his glare to the two standing in the doorway, “You’re letting the pastries burn you fucking idiots.” Kaminari yelped and ran to the oven where, sure enough, the pastries were beginning to burn. “Gimme one of those.” Bakugou growled standing up and grabbing a burning hot patry and setting it quickly on a small plate with a napkin. He took the slightly black pastry and marched around the counter and out to where Kirishima was sitting drinking his coffee with a disgusted face.
“Y’know we sell more than coffee right?” Kirishima startled out of his reverie and looked up nearly choking on his coffee.
“Oh uh hey! Yeah I just like-” “I know you hate coffee hair for brains.” Bakugou smirked at the embarrassed expression that took over Kirishima’s face,
“We sell pastries and shit too, just order those.” Bakugou emphasised his sentence by setting down the burnt pastry. Kirishima rubbed the back of his neck nervously and then picked up the pastry, inspecting it.
“It’s the cheapest thing on the menu.” He replied like that was any real answer.
“Jesus Christ, why even order it if you don’t like it?” Bakugou sighed in exasperation and turned to leave, stopping only when Kirishima spoke again.
“You haven’t texted.” It wasn’t a question, and it was spoken softly as though the words had escaped from his mouth rather than had been spoken. Bakugou turned around once more and Kirishima was looking down at his coffee his face almost as red as his hair and Bakugou suddenly didn’t know what to say. “If I have it all wrong I’m sorry, but I just thought-”
“You don’t have it wrong.” It was Bakugou’s turn to blush and look away as Kirishima turned impossibly redder and looked up at Bakugou who was now glaring at a plant off the side of the table. “It’s fucking hard as shit to know what to say, ok.” Kirishima beamed at Bakugou’s pink face.
“I don’t know, it doesn’t seem that hard to send a simple ‘hey’” Kirishima joked at Bakugou who turned to fix his glare on the redhead.
“Then you fucking try it!” Bakugou grabbed a pen from his apron and slammed it onto the table. “570-200-606. Good fucking luck!” He turned on his heel leaving Kirishima scrambling to write the number down behind him.
“What was that all about!” Mina all but jumped Bakugou as soon as Kirishima had left the store.
“I gave shitty hair my number.” Bakugou stated grabbing the cleaner and heading towards the tables
“Wait you did what?!” Kaminari leaned over the counter to yell at Bakugou who aimed the sprayer at him and released a squirt into his face.
“Don’t yell ass hat!” Bakugou yelled back at him, ignoring the irony. “He probably won’t even message me. That shit is hard as fuck.” Bakugou turned back to the task at hand.
Closing time was nearly upon them and Kaminari, the only part time employee had gone home for the day leaving Bakugou at the counter and Mina at her usual post of sitting on the counter to bug Bakugou.
“Hey Bakugou, what if you give me your phone and I text Kirishima for you?” Mina said as though that weren’t the worst idea she had ever had.
“No way in hell”
“Aw come on, I won’t be weird or anything!” Mina begged reaching for Bakugou who stepped out of her reach.”I’ll just tell him you want to lick his sweet sweet abs and run your fingers through his gorgeous red locks. Just the truth you know” She gave a devilish smirk and Bakugou glared back at her. She wasn’t wrong per se, but he would never admit that to anyone much less to the boy himself.
“Go fuck yourself” He growled heading over to the dish washer to get it started.
“Only if you fuck Kirishima” She giggled and jumped down from the counter knowing what was coming next. Bakugou grabbed the nearest object, a measuring cup and chucked it at Mina who expertly dodged and ran into the breakroom for safety, locking the door behind her.
“Come out of there you fucking coward!” Bakugou banged on the door and Mina gave a squeak from inside.
“Oooh Bakugou could this be your phone I see?” she yelled back through the door, “Hey what’s your password? I just wanna know!”
“Put that down right fucking now or I swear to god you’ll never see your college graduation!” There was a slight note of panic in Bakugou’s voice as he banged on the door harder. How much would it cost to repair the door if he broke it in. Would his boss kill him for it? Was it truly worth it, it’s not like Mina knew his password. Still the implications that she could potentially get on it were terrifying.
“Aww come on Bakugo don’t be like that! I wasn’t gonna-” She paused for a moment before letting out a squeal, “Oh my god!” The lock on the door turned and Mina stood before him holding his phone out, the screen facing him, one notification lit up on the screen. A text. He swiped the phone from her hands and quickly unlocked the phone. The text was one word, and even though he had never texted the number or placed it into his phone he had still memorized it long ago. It was Kirishima, and the text was one word.
“Hey”
Bakugou felt his cheeks heat up, what an idiot. How was he supposed to respond to that? His phone buzzed once more and Mina jumped trying to peek over his shoulder at the new text that lit up the screen.
“See, it’s not that hard ;)”
Bakugou smiled, now that he could work with.
