Summary
The sky was clear and the day was bright in the Qinghe Nie sect’s Unclean Realm. Remarkably good weather, for the beginning of winter, but Nie Huaisang knows it won’t last. If the crisp bite in the air or the wary clouds gathering on the horizon tell him anything, it will be snowing by tomorrow at the latest.

He doesn’t have a chance to ask as Jiang Cheng looks around in exaggerated wonder. He stifles a snicker behind his fan as Jiang Cheng sticks a finger in a cage and wiggles it around in front of the bird inside. “Do you still refuse to give names to these?” He glances back at Huaisang for a second before looking back at the bird.
“I don’t consider myself worthy to give names to them. Besides, I usually end up letting them go. Why give a name to something temporary?” Huaisang genuinely questions, closing his fan and cocking his head the slightest bit.
Something like wistfulness alights on Jiang Cheng’s face, still looking at where the bird is examining his finger carefully, and he replies, “Maybe in the hope that it’s not.” He straightens and stands back upright, turning to face Huaisang. “Or perhaps to remember it better when it’s gone.”
