Work Text:

Nightmare sipped on his coffee as he observed the two ten-year-olds play with building blocks. Little Ink and Blue were trying to collaborate in building a castle and failing in the fact each wanted something else, but they wouldn't interfere until they actually started to argue. Nightmare was torn out of his thoughts by Dream and Stretch coming back from the kitchen with snacks.

Nightmare was still getting used to Stretch’s company but the university student was responsible and definitely more than the lazy exterior he put up. Deciding to raise his little brother and still keeping up with his studies… He’s not surprised Dream, the bleeding heart, offered to help him and roped Nightmare into it.

They sat at the table and joined Nightmare in observing the two kids.

“How is work, big brother?” Dream asked as he sipped on his tea.

Nightmare sighed and rubbed under his goop covered eye socket, “Boring as usual. Once everything is settled and trustworthy people are in place there’s not much for me to do. Mother’s company works perfectly and my brewery is slowly gaining traction.”

Dream pouted, “It’s not mother’s company anymore. She’s dead and now it’s yours. You need to recognize it. And if you are so bored you can always look into giving me some nephews or nieces.” He teased. Nightmare looked at him deadpan only for Dream to snort out a laugh, “I meant adoption. I know you were thinking about it lately, you were much too involved in helping me with adopting a second kid.”

Nightmare rolled his eye, “Maybe I will think about it, I certainly have enough space for that. How is adoption of that little Cross child going?”

Dream smiled widely, “Just peachy, he should be here in less than a month. I am almost done with preparing the room for him.” He then looked at Stretch, “And how are the preparations for your exams going? If you need some peace and quiet you know I don’t mind having Blue here for a sleepover. And if I’m busy Nightmare is alright with it too, he already watches Ink from time to time.” The black-boned skeleton nodded as he sipped more on his coffee.

“Education is just as important as your sibling but you are not alone in this, if you need help just reach out.” Nightmare said calmly.

Stretch fidgeted, “I don’t want you to get too annoyed with us… Is your mood alright for that?”

Nightmare smirked, “I spent almost my whole life with my negativity disorder, I spent all those years learning how to control, analyze and regulate my emotions. If I can control myself around a bunch of annoying coworkers I can control myself around two children.” He teased, causing Stretch to mutter apologetically.

“I would actually want to leave Blue here tomorrow? If it’s alright?”

Dream beamed and the two went onto setting a sleepover for the two children that switched over to playing pretend with the plushies.

Nightmare sipped on his drink and hummed thoughtfully, maybe he really should look into adoption. There are so many kids hurt by the system, stuck in it because of certain circumstances… he wants to give them a chance.

--------

It took Nightmare two weeks to deal with the diplomatic bullshit, which was admittedly shorter thanks to his vicious lawyers and could finally come to the orphanage to see the kids and hopefully find one that will speak to his soul in the way Dream described his meeting with Ink and later Cross who will join the family soon.

He was just waiting in the main hall for one of the caretakers to come and meet him. He tried to not get discouraged by the kids running away at the sight of him. He does look intimidating after all. His negativity disorder left him with black bones that looked goopy in some spots, one of his eyes was covered with the same goop and only light spot on him was his cyan eye. It was good that today was a good day and he woke up without the tentacles, it would add more to his ‘ scary persona ’. Add to it that sometimes he couldn’t control his expressions and his kind smiles looked like he was about to kill someone and of course those that didn’t know him would run away.

He turned when he heard two sets of heels walk down the hallway and saw two women heading his way, an older human lady with gray hair in a tight bun and a young cat monster.

“Mister Nightmare Noctem?” When Nightmare nodded the human continued, “I’m Dolores, head of this orphanage and this is one of the caretakers, Mary.”

Nightmare nodded, “Pleasure to meet you, is there anything we need to go over before I see the kids?”

Dolores shook her head and started leading the way, “No, you are free to observe and approach the kids at any point today and during any future meetings to get to know them and bond.”

Mary smiled at Nightmare who looked at her with curiosity, “The kids are outside playing right now, you will be able to see them all as we demand even the older kids go out for some sun and fresh air.”

Nightmare nodded his understanding, “How many older teenagers do you have?”

Dolores sighed, “The oldest is Horror at 16 but with his mentality he may be the youngest of them all.” She said scathingly, forcing a frown onto Nightmare’s face.

Mary didn’t look the happiest either, “He’s a little slower due to trauma but he’s still smart and a gentle soul.”

The older woman scoffed, “Anyway, after him you will have Killer at 14 and Dust at 12. Other than them we have many kids under 10 years old and even some toddlers.”

Nightmare hummed thoughtfully, “Do those three get along? It must be difficult around so many children.” He tried digging.

Mary smiled softly, “Yes, they are extremely close, protective of one another.”

Nightmare smiled only to glare at Dolores, “A bunch of troublemakers you mean. They make anyone even thinking about adopting one of them back out swiftly. I’m sure they will be stuck here until 18 and then die out in the real world.”

Nightmare held back a growl as they just reached the outdoors where the kids were running around. It was actually quite easy to spot Horror if only due to the fact he was tall… almost as tall as Nightmare who at his 6 feet and 3 inches was quite tall. What was most concerning was the hole in his skull. Next to him were two other skeletons, one had black streaks of goop falling from his eyes which was a proof of negativity disorder, although a lighter case than Nightmare’s one. He also seemed to have some soul disorder that would require help for sure. The shortest skeleton was fidgeting and tearing the grass in a nervous manner hinting at possible anxiety.

“Is anyone taking care of their health issues?” He asked and frowned when Mary looked at Dolores in disdain.

“They need too much care, we don’t have enough budget to pander to their issues.” She said calmly, as if there was nothing wrong with that sentence. If Nightmare had any doubts before they all disappeared at that moment. He needed therapy for years after his negativity disorder fucked up his magic, soul and emotions, to think that they don’t get even a fraction of help they need…

“Horror has issues with mobility, memory and requires more magic to sustain him. Dust has ADHD and anxiety. Killer as you probably noticed has negativity disorder and a severe soul resonance disorder.” Mary said quietly.

Nightmare nodded in understanding, "I'm familiar with the condition. My brother's child also suffers from it. Does it numb his emotions or exacerbates them?"

"In Killer's case, it's both. Sometimes he will seem lifeless and other times he will scream or cry at nothing."

Nightmare hummed thoughtfully. This will have to be handled with precision.  Dream spent months looking for a competent doctor to handle Ink's condition.

Dolores cleared her throat, tearing Nightmare from his thoughts, "It's almost dinnertime, we will go inside to oversee the preparations, you can follow the kids once the other caretakers will start herding them inside."

Nightmare murmured his thanks and returned to observing the kids.

He was already making plans on how to get through their shells. He won't act or lie to them, but he will have to use certain tactics to interest them in wanting to know him, otherwise they will just ignore any of his attempts at making contact. When it was time he followed everyone inside where they started their meal. He immediately noticed the table with the three skeletons and frowned seeing their portions were all the same size despite their age difference… and Horror, with his magic as it is he should be either getting more food or magic supplements. Nightmare couldn’t stop a sad smile when he noticed Dust and Killer trying to share some of their food with the oldest who was gently refusing, no matter how longingly he was looking at it.

It was what happened after it that made his magic boil in his bones.

One of the kids ran by them and poured his drink into the crack in his skull. After that all hell descended, Killer almost jumped at the kid with a knife he used for dinner, only Dust’s small frame holding him back. The caretakers were paying more attention to the scuffle between the kids instead of Horror, who was struggling. Nightmare decided to intervene, ignoring Killer and Dust glaring at him.

He grabbed a towel that was held by one of the caretakers that ran out of the kitchen and laid Horror down on his side so his skull was lower than his body and the liquid started to leak out slowly, “Breathe, slowly. It’s going to be alright.” Nightmare murmured quietly, rubbing Horror’s back. He could feel his feelings churning and the negative goop bubble on his back, his tentacles close to snapping into existence.

Once Nightmare was sure all of the drink was out of Horror’s skull he helped him sit up and handed him a few monster candies, “Eat them after dinner, you will need the extra magic.” He said gently only to be interrupted by Dolores.

“The three of you! To your room! No dinner for you!” She yelled and Horror immediately looked devastated while Dust and Killer were furious, but not as furious as Nightmare.

Four black tendrils emerged from his back and slapped into the wooden floor as Nightmare boomed, “Enough!” In a dark voice. He looked at the three, his expression gentling, “Finish your food and only then go back to your room. You two make sure your friend rests.” Then he glared at Dolores and hissed, “We can talk here or in front of all those children but I will warn you, this is not going to be nice.”

Dolores gulped and nodded. Nightmare then looked at Mary, “Make sure the real perpetrator is punished. The child that deliberately poured the drink into what is essentially an open wound should be taught about consequences of his own actions.” He said and then left the quiet room with the head of the orphanage.

Horror was still looking stunned at the candies he got, not expecting this unwarranted bit of kindness.

He wanted to know more about the black-boned skeleton.

---------

After the dinner the three skeletons instead of heading to their room decided to head to the activity room where the computers were. Killer frowned, “What do we even search? Do you know his name?” He asked looking at Dust as Horror started eating the candy he got.

“I heard Miss Mary say something about Nightmare so search for that.” He said quietly, fidgeting with his scarf.

Killer nodded and a quick search showed a few articles about Nightmare Noctem. “It says he owns a sweets’ manufacture and a brewery and he and his brother took part in a few charity events over the years… maybe he came here to see about making a donation?” Killer said with a shrug.

“He’s nice...” Horror murmured, popping another candy in his mouth.

Dust nodded, “And he reacted quickly and didn’t let Miss Dolores punish us even when Killer almost attacked that brat… You think he will come again?” He said with a hopeful glance at the other two.

Horror and Killer exchanged glances and then Horror turned towards Dust with a smile, “Maybe… I think he will...” He mumbled hugging the smaller skeleton.

They read a few more articles, finding out that Nightmare’s case of negativity disorder was one of the heaviest ever recorded and that he and his twin brother lost their mother when they were around 10. They were raised by a foster family until Nightmare turned 18 and took over the family fortune bringing it back to its former glory. There was also some article from some gossip site showing pictures of Nightmare glaring at the camera while hiding Dream holding a kid behind him. It said Dream had an adopted son, but there are no further details about him as Nightmare threatened them with a lawsuit.

The kids were soon chased back to their room by one of the caretakers where they spent some time talking in hushed voices, doing homework and just spending time together like the siblings they thought of themselves as.

---------

Nightmare put his book aside to pick up his phone, smiling when he saw it was his brother calling, “Hello Dream, how can I help you, brother?”

Dream chuckled softly, “Do you have free time today? My car is at the mechanic but I got a call. I can get Cross home with me today, so I would need a lift and you would be able to meet your new nephew right away.”

Nightmare got up and started to gather his things, “Of course, I will be there soon to pick you up. Will Ink come with us?” He asked as he took his car keys.

“Yep, but don’t worry, I have two child seats.” Dream said calmly. Nightmare smiled hearing Ink chanting something and chuckling in the background.

The trip was uneventful and when Dream and Ink went inside the foster home where Cross was living, Nightmare waited in the car, scrolling idly on his phone. He got out when he saw Dream go out, laden with two children and several bags. Knowing there was no way to get those two little skeletons off him he took the bags and started putting them in the trunk. He smiled at Cross who looked at him fearfully, hoping the child wouldn't fear him.

Dream held Cross close and nuzzled the nine-year-old’s cheek softly, “This is my brother Nightmare, I know he looks scary but he’s a softie.”

Nightmare held out his hand to the child, “Hello Cross, it’s nice to meet you little one.” He said with a gentle tone.

Cross took Nightmare’s hand and shook it gently to then hide his face in Dream’s chest. Dream looked at Nightmare with a smile, “He’s shy.” Nightmare nodded and helped Dream with putting Ink in the car while the other seated Cross who then clung to Dream’s hand as the skeleton decided to sit in the back between his two kids.

“Are you happy to be coming home with me, Cross?” Dream asked cheerfully.

Cross nodded, “W-will I be with you long?” He asked quietly.

Dream frowned and met Nightmare’s gaze in the rearview mirror. Nightmare smiled encouragingly and returned his gaze to the road as he spoke, “Cross, I regret to inform you that you are stuck with my brother for the rest of your life. There’s no going back now.”

Dream stuck his tongue out at Nightmare while Cross smiled and clung to Dream’s hand more, happy he won’t be passed around anymore. Ink held a snack sized chocolate bar to Cross who took it with wide eyes.

“We are brothers now, Cross! You will meet Blue soon too! He’s my friend and I’m sure you will like him too.”

The car then filled with chatter of the two kids, that soon transferred into Dream’s house. Ink was showing Cross around while Nightmare and Dream were unpacking Cross’ belongings.

“How was the first visit at the orphanage, brother? Did any kids catch your eye?” Dream asked softly.

Nightmare sighed and retold the happenings of that day, Dream being rightfully outraged at the lack of care shown towards the teens, “You will try to adopt them, but what if they don’t accept?”

Nightmare smirked darkly, “I will donate and make sure the money gets where it’s supposed to. I will not leave those kids without help. I will try my best so they accept me… of course that doesn’t mean I’m what they expect from a parent.” He said with a resigned tone.

Dream hugged him with a soft smile, “I’m sure any kid you adopt will be the happiest in the whole world. Although remember those are teens we are talking about, they can get moody and have quite the opinions they won’t hesitate to share. Just be your usual self and let them see the real you.” He said reassuringly, beaming when Nightmare returned the hug.

“Besides...” Dream continued with a teasing tone, “I’m sure you already have a plan. No one can beat you when you put your heart into something.” He said, laughing when Nightmare squeezed him tightly.

---------

Horror was napping under the tree with Dust in his lap reading a book and Killer by his side. It was a lazy day for them and thankfully no one bothered them today, not even the caretakers that could usually find something… anything to blame on them. Actually, it was easier ever since Nightmare’s visit.

The three jolted when someone knocked on the tree, their eyes heading there to find the very skeleton they hoped to see again, “Hello, do you mind if I sit next to you?” The adult said with a smooth voice.

Killer grimaced, “What if we say no?”

“My soul may just break.” He said in a deadpan voice with a small smirk that made the three chuckle, Horror still sounding a bit sleepy.

“Why are you here anyway?” Dust asked with a frown.

Nightmare smiled and revealed a basket he hid behind his back, “I was looking for a calm spot to eat lunch and thought it would be nice to do so here in the shadow of the trees. Also… I got too much food and wouldn’t want it to go to waste.”

Horror immediately perked up at the thought of food and the other two didn’t have the heart to make Nightmare leave now that he got the big guy interested, he needs any food he can get. Dust patted the ground and invited the other to sit down next to them. He noticed that while last time Nightmare wore what was closer to a suit, today he had a soft sweater and dark jeans.

Nightmare opened the basket and took out a paper tray with four paper cups, three big ones and one smaller that the adult took and put close to himself before starting to unpack the food he had. There were sandwiches, fruit, little packs of chips and a take-away box with cakes. First they reached for the cups finding them to be filled with hot chocolate. They guessed Nightmare was drinking coffee but what Killer found interesting was the way Nightmare’s goop rippled when he sipped on the coffee.

Nightmare must have noticed Killer’s gaze as he smirked and put the cup down, “Caffeine is not the best when you suffer from negativity disorder but sometimes you need the kick.” The three frowned and Killer leaned forward, expecting further explanation. Nightmare smiled softly, “The caffeine in coffee can exacerbate effects of anxiety, nerves, can make you jittery and so on. It does all that you don’t want to experience with negativity disorder.”

Killer nodded, “I don’t need coffee to not be able to handle mine.” He mumbled, Horror hugging him gently while Dust rubbed his back.

“No one said it was easy but it is possible, especially if you get the proper help. All issues are manageable over time. It took me...” Nightmare paused counting in his head, “A bit over ten years to be able to control my magic and I still get lapses in control.” He said with a soft expression.

Dust fidgeted with the frayed end of his scarf, “It’s not like anyone here wants to help us. They are just waiting for us to turn eighteen and get lost.”

Nightmare let out a quiet growl that he tried to muffle into his coffee, “Fate is a fickle thing. Who knows, maybe it will smile to you soon.” He shook his head as if getting rid of a stray thought and smiled, “But we should eat, help yourselves.”

Horror didn’t hesitate to take a sandwich, the other two following his example. They spend some time just eating in silence until a phone chimed and Nightmare had to answer a message. Killer couldn’t hold his curiosity back, “Who was it?”

Nightmare hummed as he put his phone on the grass, “My younger brother.”

Horror swallowed the bite he had in his mouth and murmured, “The one with the adopted kid?”

Nightmare chuckled, “Did some research, didn’t you? But yes, although now it’s two adopted kids. He just adopted another kid and messaged me asking to watch them this evening as he has a night shift at work… I guess I will be taking care of three kids if Ink’s friend joins the sleepover.” He shrugged with a smile, “I don’t mind the company.”

Killer frowned, “Why are you here? And not some bullshit about eating lunch here. What’s the real reason?”

Horror put a hand on Killer’s neck and started whispering to him, Killer not settling down. Nightmare noticed Dust also getting more anxious and sighed, “What is your idea of what I’m doing here?” He asked, looking at him seriously.

Killer growled, his soul wavering, “I don’t fucking know! Probably to donate so the money can go to everyone but us.” He started rubbing at his face, smearing the black goop all over it. Nightmare let out a soft sound and took out a handkerchief, leaning into Killer’s space. He tugged Killer’s hands away from his face and started cleaning it, the special material easily absorbing the goop.

“I feel like if I tell you now you will chase me away.” Nightmare said with a soft voice.

Dust grabbed onto Nightmare’s sleeve, “You can’t adopt us. We won’t let you separate us.” He said, looking at the adult with desperation in his mismatched eyes.

Nightmare smiled weakly and got up, taking his empty basket. He bowed slightly and left, leaving the food behind for them. The three were confused, Killer looking at the handkerchief Nightmare left while Horror focused on all the extra food. Dust followed Nightmare’s exit, seeing him talk to one of the caretakers.

Dust knew he was selfish, taking away the chance of Killer or Horror getting adopted but, he didn’t want to lose any of them… he didn’t want to be left alone.

--------

Nightmare was back at his home in the mansion that was passed through generations. Dream refused to live there but he didn’t mind visiting or spending the odd night here and his Ink and Blue loved to visit. Cross also seemed transfixed about the mansion and was happily exploring with the other two. Nightmare was in his office and looking at three files he got from the orphanage.

He wanted to learn more about the three to understand them better. He had all three open on the notes made by the caretakers about their basic history and behaviour.

Horror Tale

Was a victim of an attack on his family. Lost his whole family there and got a crack in his skull.

The trauma caused issues with his memory, motor skills, emotional balance and more. He is blind in one of the sockets. The crack disturbed his magic, his body using more of energy to run its basic functions thus requiring more sustenance.

Bigger food intake or magic supplements are advised.

Horror is a gentle soul though easily spooked can react aggressively, as if always expecting a threat. It hints at a deep trauma. Even though Horror doesn’t remember the attack his magic seems to remember.

Created a bond with Killer Serif and Dust Phantom. The three treat each other as brothers.

Horror shows considerable troubles in his education and requires a lot of support to reach the level of his classmates. Only subject he surprisingly shows no issue at is Science. Shows interest in cooking in the Tech Ed classes, not clear if it’s his fixation with food that’s the reason or actual interest in the activity.

Nightmare rubbed his forehead. Horror surprisingly seemed like the easiest to handle. He will need to see a therapist, just like the other two and Nightmare will get him onto a better diet and maybe magic supplements if the doctors deems it necessary. That should greatly improve his magic and lessen other issues, helping him with school a little… Maybe he will find him a tutor too.

Killer Serif

Abandoned by his parents that moved overseas, was under the care of relatives for a year until an accident happened that made his negativity disorder appear.

His previous soul resonance disorder joined with the negativity disorder caused his moods to become volatile. He displays shows of aggression especially when triggered by an emotionally charged situation. His most aggressive side shows when he’s feeling protective of someone or something.

Has a bond with Horror Tale and Dust Phantom, displays most emotions in their company.

Has no issues in school. His grades are average and many teachers say he’s not trying in his classes, hinting at possible better results if he applied himself. His favorite subject is Science and displays interest in woodwork but due to his temper and the use of sharp tools he can only do so under supervision in school.

Nightmare nodded to himself, all of this was true but didn’t really offer him much information about the skeleton. Whomever created this note was negligent in their duty. With a sigh he moved his sight to the last file.

Dust Phantom

Was admitted after losing his family. He witnessed his family being murdered and after a brief episode under psychiatric care joined the orphanage.

Diagnosed with anxiety and ADHD. Lashes out during sensory overloads but well behaved under normal circumstances. Experiences panic attacks triggered by the sight of guns, real or fake, and the sound of gunshots or anything resembling it such as fireworks.

Tied deep friendship with Horror Tale and Killer Serif, practically inseparable from them. They seem to give him a measure of safety and comfort.

Decent grades in school, special interest in Science. Has trouble connecting with classmates. Has talent in Chemistry, praised by the teacher of the subject.

Nightmare closed the files and hid them all in the drawer that was then closed with a key. The three clearly had deep traumas and won’t easily trust Nightmare… he hopes he didn’t throw away his chances when he refused to tell them about his intentions.

He shook his head and emerged from his office to find the kids and spend the time with his nephews and their friend. Those thoughts will need to wait, he still has three troublemakers to take care of.

----------

Nightmare has returned the files and was walking around the orphanage aimlessly only to almost bump into Horror, stopping him from falling down with a hand on his spine.

“Are you alright?” He asked the other who slowly started relaxing from his tense stance.

“Am… good...” Horror murmured as he stepped back to get some space, “Yer back?”

Nightmare smiled, “Yes, I think the last meeting ended on a sour note and I wanted to rectify that. Where were you headed?”

“Back to our room… was just getting a book… for homework.” Horror said with a shrug and started leading the way.

Nightmare followed him with a smile, “If you want I can help you with it. It has been a while since I worked on some subjects but I think I may remember most of it.”

Horror blushed, “No one ever wants to help me, say I’m too slow.”

Nightmare put a hand on his shoulder, “I don’t think so and no matter how long it takes for you to solve something, it doesn’t make you worse in any way.”

Horror smiled and opened the doors to reveal a small room with three beds shoved under the walls and three desks in the middle of it. Dust and Killer looked at Nightmare in shock, Killer’s expression turning to suspiciousness quickly.

“What do you want now?” He said sharply, his soul swirling already.

Nightmare closed the door behind himself and folded his hands behind his back, “I came to apologize. I withheld my intentions to protect myself but didn’t think about your situation.”

Killer was stunned, he didn’t remember the last time an adult apologized to him or anyone else… this was new, “So, the reason?”

Nightmare smiled weakly, “I’m looking into adopting and was quite enraged by your treatment. Once I learned more about you, by observation or by talking to you I became more interested. I won’t force you to agree. If you decide to not accept, I already made a decision to donate so you get the help you deserve.” He said slowly, tapping his foot with nerves.

“All...” Dust squeaked, coughing to clear his tight throat, “All three of us?”

Nightmare nodded with a determined expression, “I fought tooth and nail to not be separated from Dream. I would never even offer to separate siblings, by blood or not. Family is what you make of it. We were adopted as well, our mother never married or had children of her own.” Nightmare smiled softly, “Dream often jokes that we keep her memory alive by doing so as well. Although my reason for adoption is different and I’m not sure if I want to get into that.” He looked at the three with a serious look, “What you need to know is that I want to give you the best possible care you can receive to help you overcome your troubles.”

The three huddled together and started whispering to then look at Nightmare, Horror speaking out, “Can we think about it?”

Nightmare nodded without hesitation, “Of course, in the beginning I planned on multiple visits to get to know you and let you know me before even telling you my intentions. Take all the time you need to decide and don’t hesitate to ask questions about me, although I may refuse to answer some, I will always give you a reason for doing so.”

Horror nodded and picked up a book, “Homework?”

Nightmare chuckled and joined Horror at the desk, “Of course, where do you need help?”

They spent the time together until the visitation hours were done and Nightmare had to leave but not before handing the three some snacks that were all from the same brand, Nim manufacture, that was owned by Nightmare. It looked like a sampling of all his sweets and some that they didn’t even see at the stores yet.

“I like him...” Horror mumbled into the dark of the room, not sure if the other two were even still awake. And yet he got an agreeing murmur from Dust and a vague sound from Killer. They knew it probably would take Killer the longest to warm up to the adult, he had enough on his mind that adding another drama to it made his two disorders worse than they should ever be.

Whatever decision they will make will be made as a group, they won’t leave each other no matter what.

-----------

Dream was pacing back and forth in front of his brother who was calmly seated at his desk, “This idea is nice yeah, but Cross is still getting used to things, adding more people into the mix, people that may not even become a part of his life… are you sure you want to try this?”

Nightmare sighed, “I already got permission from the orphanage, all I need to do is ask them if they would be interested. And Dream… Horror is 16, in two years they will ditch him. If they don’t accept I would offer him help from that point on and same with the other two, I am already creating trust funds for those three.” He said, rubbing his forehead.

Dream sat in one of the armchairs, “Alright, I will be here with the kids, just tell me which night so I don’t have the night shift at the hospital. I want to meet them as well.”

Nightmare smiled and nodded, “Of course, I will make sure of that… it will be on the weekend for sure, I don’t want to disrupt their education.”

Dream chuckled, “Of course you would worry about that. When are you going to visit them?”

“Tomorrow, I will ask them then.”

Dream nodded, “Good, I bet Ink will be excited about the sleepover. You won’t mind Blue, would you? Stretch as well...”

Nightmare shook his head, “They are present around you so often that they may as well be a part of the family. I don’t worry much about them joining us, Blue is a smart child and Stretch is responsible and intelligent. He will connect the dots once seeing them without me having to spell it out to him and Blue won’t ask insensitive questions.”

The brothers then shifted the topic of the conversation to a nearing charity auction they planned to attend, making plans on what to buy and which goal to donate.

-----------

Nightmare was in the boys’ room and waited for their answer patiently.

“You want us to come to your house and to meet your family and friends? Why? Like for real...” Killer asked with a grimace, not understanding the motives of the adult in front of him.

Nightmare smiled, “It’s quite simple. Agreeing to be adopted by me would mean becoming part of my family and that includes my brother, his children and our friends. If you choose to be my family you will see them often enough. It’s just for the day and after sleeping over for the night I will bring you back. Think of it as… trial adoption.” He finished with an unsure expression.

Dust tugged on Killer’s sleeve, the older leaning down to listen to the other, his expression smoothing out, “Alright, we will go, but if at any point we want to come back here you will bring us.” He demanded.

The adult nodded simply, “Of course, even if it’s in the middle of the night I will bring you back should you wish so. I promise you that. Will this weekend be alright with you?”

They nodded and changed the topic to school as Nightmare was helping them all with homework. If he will be like that even after the adoption the whole situation may not be so bad… and it definitely can’t get worse than this.

The weekdays had passed and soon the three were in the car with Nightmare, small backpacks in the trunk of the car for their stay. They were nervous and not sure if Nightmare’s pensiveness hinted at his stress as well. He seemed in a bad mood… Dust and Horror didn’t want to pry but Killer didn’t have an issue with this.

“What got your pants in a twist?” He asked with a sharp grin.

Nightmare sighed and forcibly relaxed his body, “It’s a work issue. I’m sure you are not interested.” Killer glared at Nightmare until the other broke, “One of the managers was abusing his power and taking advantage of the other workers. It was going on for only a month but I still don’t like how long it took me to find out about it. There’s a lot of legal mess to take care of and paperwork to follow.” He smiled weakly, “It can wait though, my brother made me promise to not work on the weekends and I plan on keeping it.”

Killer nodded, not sure if he was satisfied with the explanation but it all was forgotten when they pulled up to the massive gate that opened when Nightmare clicked on some remote. They moved up a long driveway, finding another car there already standing next to a mansion, “Hmmm, Dream and Stretch must have come already with the kids. Let’s get inside then.” Nightmare said with a smile.

The group moved to the door and went inside, the teenagers gaping at the decor. Nightmare was about to say something when a shout rang out, “Uncle Nightmare!” They turned to see a little kid with a smear of black paint on his cheek running towards Nightmare and throwing himself at the adult who caught him effortlessly as if used to it.

“Hello Ink, you little terror. Where is my brother and Stretch?” He asked, holding the child on his hip.

“They are in the kitchen preparing dinner, Cross and Blue were with me in the living room painting.” Ink chattered, to then wave at the new skeletons, “Hi! I’m Ink!”

Nightmare covered Ink’s mouth, “Take a deep breath Ink. Did you break into the sweets’ cabinet again?” Ink nodded with the hand still on his mouth, “I will keep it from Dream if you eat all your vegetables during dinner. Deal?” Ink nodded and Nightmare removed his hand from Ink’s mouth, “Go back to the others, I will show the boys their room for tonight and join you soon for the introductions.” Nightmare said putting Ink back on the ground, the kid running off again.

Nightmare motioned for the three to follow him upstairs and to the left, “I prepared a guest room for you tonight. I wanted to talk to you before preparing rooms for you to fit your preferences.” He said softly, opening the door to reveal the big room with three fluffy beds and three big closets, “It’s not much because of this.”

They put their bags down and sat all on one bed, “You are serious?” Dust said looking around.

“Yes, there are plenty of rooms to choose from for you, be it on this floor or the one above. Over the second one is only the attic and it’s not like you can live there.” He said with a smirk, “I want you to be comfortable and like it here. Besides, Dream was pushing for me to renovate the rooms anyway. Gotta start somewhere.”

A voice came from downstairs, “Nightmare! Dinner is almost ready!”

Nightmare turned to the hallway, “Coming, Dream!” He then turned to the boys, “Let’s go, shall we?”

The three followed him, looking around the living room they passed, noticing paper and crayons on the low table. Then they passed the kitchen and went into the dining room where three kids and two adults were sitting at the table. One was a little similar to Nightmare, especially in bone structure. Nightmare stood at one of the seatings with the plate, “I will introduce you. Horror, Killer, Dust, meet my younger twin Dream, his adopted sons Ink and Cross and our friend Stretch and his brother Blue.” Each person waved when introduced, the teenagers nodding as they took a seat at the table.

There were plenty of dishes to choose from and each person started helping themselves, Ink, Cross and Blue getting their food first as the adults filled the plates for the kids. Horror helped himself and then helped Dust with his plate while Killer filled his. Nightmare cleared his throat when they were about to start eating, getting their attention, “Please don’t hesitate to eat your fill, there’s plenty for all of us.” He said, looking at Horror who blushed and nodded, adding more food to his plate which earlier had a portion similar to Dust’s. Satisfied Nightmare nodded and everyone started eating in a comfortable quiet.

Suddenly Dream’s phone pinged and the guardian got up, “It’s medicine time, Ink.” He said softly, the child nodding with a small grimace. He swallowed the pill, washing it down with juce.

The teenagers looked at Nightmare who mouthed ‘soul resonance’ and looked at Killer’s soul for a good measure. The three understood and Killer immediately wondered why he didn’t get any medication when his soul was so bad it floated outside of his body. Nightmare smiled sadly and topped off Killer’s juice glass.

“Can we watch a movie later?” Blue asked, looking at Nightmare with stars in his eyes, “Please?”

Nightmare hummed thoughtfully, “Maybe if the boys want to watch something as well. And even then only if you eat all your vegetables.” He said simply.

Blue beamed and looked at the three across the table with puppy eyes. They exchanged glances and Killer shrugged, “Why not? We don’t mind watching something.”

Blue cheered and returned to his meal. Dream smiled at the three, “What do you like doing in your free time?” He asked kindly, trying to get to know them.

Killer grimaced, “They never agree to let us spend free time on what we like.”

Dream frowned, “I understand but what if you were allowed to do what you like.”

Horror hummed around a mouthful of food and swallowed, “I wanted to learn how to cook… they say I’m not allowed too… that I’m too forgetful.”

Nightmare scoffed, “That’s what alarms are for. And cooking is something that gets better with practice. Besides, how do they expect you to survive once you are independent if they don’t let you learn such basic things?” He then started to mumble, his brows knitted until Dream snapped his fingers.

“No work on the weekends and certainly not at the dinner table, Nighty.” He admonished with Nightmare nodding, his expression mellowed out.

Dust mumbled something, getting everyone’s attention. He blushed and cleared his throat to speak louder, “I like taking care of the plants, but except for one I have in our room I can’t do much...”

Dream gasped with a bright expression, “Nighty! You need to give him that patch of the garden! You know, the one you still didn’t plan anything for.”

Nightmare nodded, “Of course, I can give him the whole garden if he wishes for it.”

Killer was then put on the spot as the twins looked at him expectantly, “Art...” He mumbled and when Nightmare waved his hand for him to elaborate he pouted, “I like carving and working with clay… they said I’m not to be trusted around sharp objects, they barely let me have a knife during the meals.”

Nightmare smiled softly, “That can be easily remedied and I see no reason why you should be kept away from what can be seen as calming.”

Dream nodded, swallowing another bite of food, “Yeah, and I’m sure one of the unused rooms is an art room. Even after all those years we did not go through them all. Mother had some obsession with collecting keys and they are mixed with the house keys, and Nightmare is not inclined with getting it done.”

Nightmare rolled his visible eye, “I have enough open and usable rooms. If we need more I can get them open and renovate them.”

Dream leaned forward and covered his mouth, speaking in a mock whisper, “He just likes the vintage look of the place, but acts like he doesn’t. He’s an old man deep in his soul.” He teased, earning himself a cuff on his head from Nightmare.

Ink and Blue were chuckling openly, Cross was trying to hide it while the teens and Stretch were lost for words. The twins then started to bicker, everyone appreciating the show they were putting on with their witty remarks.

Once their plates were empty everyone moved to the living room with the kids chattering to the teens about the movie they were going to choose. The adults went to wash the dishes and joined them, carrying plates with dessert. Horror didn’t feel so full since he finished the basket of sweets Nightmare gave them, he felt as if his mind was clearer and his body less achy.

At one point Killer got up and whispered for Nightmare to come with him. They all were curious what the two were going to talk about but they were better than trying to eavesdrop.

---------

Nightmare showed Killer to his office and sat in an armchair next to Killer instead of behind his desk, “You wanted to ask me something. Ask away. Nothing will leave this room.”

Killer nodded, “If anything I can tell the others when I’m ready… So you will answer me and no lies, right?” Nightmare nodded with a calm expression and waited for Killer to gather his thoughts, “How do you control your negativity? I just… can’t.” He said, worrying his hands.

Nightmare smiled sadly, “Years of therapy and meditation.” He chuckled when Killer grimaced, “Meditation is my way of remaining calm, but you need to find yours. Like you said you like clay and wood carving. Maybe something to keep your hands busy, plasticine maybe? You can use that even without any tools. Or squishies? I can also introduce you to some breathing exercises that will help you calm down during emotional situations.”

Killer nodded, satisfied… at least partially, “And therapy?”

Nightmare nodded, “I actually think that all three of you need therapy after what you went through. You will also need to meet a doctor specializing with soul resonance, Dust will need a psychologist and Horror a possible long term physical therapy.”

Killer rubbed his face, “It’s all too expensive. We can’t...”

Nightmare took his hands and held them gently, “Killer, no matter how expensive it is, I want you to have it. Besides, I won’t die from spending this money. I have a lot saved that me and Dream split when we inherited our mother’s fortune. I have two businesses, accept me or not, I will still make sure you get it all. And you won’t stop me. If you ask Dream I’m sure he will tell you just how stubborn I am.”

Killer let out a snort, his breath hitching as he started crying, tears mixing with the black goop. Nightmare hugged the teen and started rubbing circles on his back, rocking back and forth. Killer clung to him, feeling just a teensy bit guilty about getting his tears on Nightmare’s shirt but it all just melted away with relief filling him.

He couldn’t feel any lies from Nightmare, and seeing him in front of his family, how his behaviour didn’t change… he wasn’t perfect but he also could accept his faults and wasn’t too proud to apologize to them… he didn’t see them as someone who didn’t deserve an apology.

-----------

Dream and Stretch were carrying sleeping children to bed while Horror and Dust stayed in the living room, waiting for Killer and Nightmare to come back, Dust nervously jumping on the channels on the TV. They flinched when the two came, Killer looking tired and like he was crying but also standing considerably closer to Nightmare, not shrugging off the hand on his shoulder.

“I know it’s not as late as you would probably like but I think we all should go to sleep, I guarantee you the kids will wake us all up at an ungodly hour.” Nightmare said softly, “I can make you some tea, Killer to help you sleep. You two too.”

The three nodded and, prompted by Nightmare, headed to the room they were staying at, taking turns in the shower and waiting for Nightmare to come back. He came, carrying a tray with four big cups of steaming tea.

“I have the permission to have you here until after dinner tomorrow, but if you want I can bring you back earlier.” Nightmare said in a calm tone and sipped on his tea, the others following to find it being some sweet blend.

“Can we look around the house tomorrow? And the garden?” Dust asked quietly.

Nightmare nodded, “Of course. You can enter any room except the closed ones, they are mostly not renovated and thus not 100% safe. unless you are with me or Dream stay away, alright?”

The boys nodded in agreement, “Will we be able to come by for the weekend again?” Killer asked, his fingers tapping on the cup idly.

Nightmare smiled wide, “Of course, as many weeks as you want. You are welcome anytime… except when you have classes, I don’t want you skipping school.” He teased.

Once they finished the tea Nightmare collected the cups and left wishing them a goodnight. They changed into pajamas and settled in easily despite it being the first night here, they felt comfortable as if the warm welcome they received reflected in the atmosphere of the building.

They couldn’t wait for how tomorrow will turn out.

--------

Nightmare apparently was right when he warned them about the kids waking them up at an ungodly hour. Good thing they went for Dust first, because Horror didn’t react well to being startled.

“Wake up! Breakfast is almost ready! Come on!” Ink cheered, tugging on Dust.

The three chased the kids out of the room, saying they needed to change. Once in their day clothes they descended to the kitchen where the table was set with stakes of pancakes, waffles, bacon, eggs and fruit. Nightmare and Dream were just plating some toast.

“Good morning boys. I hope you slept well. Sit and help yourselves, there’s tea and juice too.” Nightmare said with a smile.

Horror sat and this time didn’t hesitate to fill his plate with as much as he felt he needed, the others following his example. The breakfast was a calm affair, the kids chattering with Dream and Stretch trying to keep them busy while Nightmare was reading the newspaper. The teens weren’t talking but they didn’t feel separated from the group. Killer leaned towards Nightmare trying to read and smiled when Nightmare moved the paper closer to him, letting them read together.

After breakfast the teens went to the garden, led there by the eager Dust and followed by Nightmare who was shifting through a ring of keys looking for one. They paused in front of a gate that separated a part of the garden, Dust tried to open it but the steel didn’t budge.

“Just a moment. One of those should open it…” Nightmare said, distracted. It took him a minute to find the right key and open the gate, letting them inside. Dust immediately ran there, looking around at the wild tangle of plants that covered the garden and it’s metal hedge. He immediately fell in love with it and wanted to take care of it. He loved how untamed it was compared to all the other gardens he saw in his life.

“You are free to do whatever you want with it. There’s a shed further ahead, with all the appliances you would need. It should be open, but I want to check it first in case something decided to move in.” Nightmare said as he headed in the direction while the teenagers were looking around, only getting a vague acknowledgement to his words.

The sheed indeed was a house to a few spiders Nightmare gently caught and released into the vines growing around it, but no racoons he feared to meet. Everything was still usable and he made sure the seeds  and the soil didn’t get moldy… if they could, he wasn’t that much of a plant enthusiast.

He observed as Dust chattered to the other two about all of the plants he knew that grew in the garden, showing off his knowledge. Nightmare observed them fondly, reminded of himself oversharing anything he read when he was a child… before his negativity disorder appeared and tampered with his ability to safely feel strong emotions.

“They really are not what some think at first glance, huh?” Dream said softly, appearing at his side.

Nightmare nodded with a smile, “I hope Stretch is looking after the kids, I don’t trust them in this wild garden.”

Dream chuckled, “It does look like straight from the secret garden.” Nightmare had to agree. He hopes Dust will enjoy taking care of it.

“By the way, have you looked at the blueprints? There was this one pseudo apartment in the house. Mom marked it as needing renovation.” Dream rocked on his feet as he spoke.

“Yes, it has a main room, a big bathroom and three bedrooms off it. I will show it to them after checking if it at least has the proper wiring.” The taller skeleton said as he shifted on his feet. He doesn’t want to offer them a room and then make them wait god knows how long until it’s even suitable for living, “I will then let them choose the furniture and colors for the rooms… within reason of course.” He smirked remembering Dream’s old room that was at one point bright yellow with gold accents. Now it was much more muted and joined with greens and blues.

“Nightmare!” The twins looked towards the three, prompted by Killer’s call, “Can we go inside and look around the house?”

“Go ahead, get us if you need help or anything else.” Nightmare called back, the brothers observing as the kids left. He was already feeling attached to them, he knew it would hurt if they decided to not accept him as an adoptive parent but he also knew that forcing them would only be worse in the long run, destroying the last shereds of trust they held for adults. The twins started walking around the garden and chatting in an amicable atmosphere.

They had no idea Stretch was right now mercilessly interrogated.

--------------

When Stretch finally got the kids to settle down and start paining, he sat down and relaxed only to flinch when he noticed the three teens standing silently in the doorway, “H-hey, what are you doing here? You can come inside, you know?”

Dust fidgeted with his scarf, “Can you answer some questions for us? Like about Nightmare. There are some things we don’t want to ask him… at this point we know he would answer but…”

Stretch smiled and nodded, “Course, come in.”

They all sat on one of the massive couches and after making sure the kids were focused on their drawings relaxed slightly, “How did you even get to know them? Dream and Nightmare.”

Stretch chuckled, “When my pops died I took over taking care of Blue and decided to still keep up with my studies. I met Dream cause Ink and Blue are going to the same class, from there I got to know Nightmare. With university and work I am sometimes swamped and can’t take care of Blue as much as he needs me to. They help me, not asking for anything back… I don’t know if I would be able to do that without their help.” The skeleton rubbed his face, “I will admit, I was scared of Nightmare at the beginning, he doesn’t look the most approachable.”

Killer snorted, “That’s an understatement. I think some kids started crying at his sight in the orphanage.”

Stretch nodded, “I was surprised when Blue didn’t. I guess it’s because he heard legends about uncle Nightmare from Ink already.”

Horror frowned, “What caused his disorder?” He asked quietly. They knew Stretch was aware of that story from the way he started sweating.

“Uhm… I don’t know if I should tell you or…”

Killer grinned and leaned forward, resting his chin on his palm, “Why not? It’s not exactly a secret now, is it?”

The adult could feel his soul tremble under the three sets of persistent gazes, “I mean… I don’t want you judging Nightmare based on that and… uhhh..” He noticed they weren’t budging, “Alright… So you know their mother died and they were in a foster family until they turned 18 and Nightmare took care of everything.”

The teens nodded, listening eagerly.

“What you won’t find anywhere is the fact that they had to switch the foster home after Nightmare traumatized their caretakers.” Stretch really missed his cigarettes right now, “Someone wanted to adopt Dream. He was of course against it, not wanting to be separated from Nightmare but as a child he didn’t have much choice. When the foster parents took Nightmare to visit Dream to make him realize his brother was now in good hands… They walked in on Dream being abused. I don’t know the extent of it, never asked for details but… it was enough that Nightmare turned furious, his control snapped and his negativity disorder appeared, snapping through his ribs and one of his sockets.”

Horror flinched imagining it. He was in the hospital for a long time after the trauma to his skull. But something like that… Nightmare really was amazing, pretty sure he was one of the only adults that would understand anything and everything they went through.

“After that no one else tried to separate them, fearing how it would destabilize Nightmare.” Stretch finished, sagging against the couch.

Dust cleared his throat, “We are not done with the questions.” He said with quiet intensity that made Stretch shiver.

-------------

The twins returned to the house carrying boxes of pizza for lunch. They just came back from the gate, where the delivery person came. They came to see Stretch looking like he just went through hell and the teens taking care of the kids.

“Do we want to know what happened?” Dream whispered to Nightmare who shook his head with an amused smile.

Their arrival was betrayed with the smell of the food, the group turning to look at them. “It’s lunch time. We can eat here, just clean up the table.” Nightmare said with a smile, noticing how Dust kept glancing at his covered eye socket. Seems he will have a serious talk with them soon… whenever they feel like bringing it up to him instead of interrogating others.

The lunch was as calm as could be expected with six kids and only three adults to break up any arguments about who should have the last slice.

“Nightmare, where can we do our homework? There are not enough desks in the guest room.” Killer asked after the lunch was all done.

Nightmare hummed, “I can show you to the library. It’s a calm place and there’s a computer, not the one I use for work so you can safely use it.” They agreed and Nightmare showed them the way to the massive room filled with books of all kinds.

“Even when not studying you are free to come here and choose a book. Unless it’s one of the older volumines, they are fragile and I don’t trust the kids at the orphanage to not mess with you and what you bring.” He said calmly as they went to the desks in the middle of the room.

“Can you help us? I got a history essay to write and Dust had something from his English class. Horror…” Killer paused looking at the bigger skeleton.

“I need someone to check my paper for me. It’s supposed to be half of my semester grade.” He said with a shrug.

Nightmare joined them at the desks and smiled, “Of course, how about I start with Horror and when you hit a snag I can help you.”

They all agreed and went on to work, slowly getting used to having someone there to help them when in need.

------------

The dinner was more muted and timid as the teens were already in the orphanage with their thoughts.

“Are you packed already?” Nightmare asked with a calm tone, the three nodding, “Alright, after dinner I need to give you something and then we can set off.”

Killer frowned, trying to figure out what this was about and was glad they wouldn't have to wait for long. Dream and Stretch went on cleaning after the dinner while Nightmare led them to his office.

“I want to give you something and hope you won’t refuse as it has more practical use.” Nightmare said and took out three phones from a drawer with chargers, “They are activated and paid for, you have mine, Dream’s and Stretch’s numbers in there and can add each others’ after you choose who takes which. It will give you the ability to call us if you need our help and to keep in contact with each other even when away.” He rambled as his fingers tapped nervously on the table. He chose bigger models so whichever Horror chose wouldn’t be too small for his hands.

Killer took one and looked it over, “Are you trying to bribe us into staying with you?”

Nightmare snorted, caught by surprise, “No, of course not. I would never stoop so low. It’s really mostly because I’m worried about the three of you and want you to have the option to call me or even the authorities when you need help.”

Dust and Horror took the other two phones and started exchanging numbers and customizing them, Killer joining in after a moment.

“Next weekend is still on the table, right?” Dust asked when they were heading to the guest room for their bags.

Nightmare smiled, his visible eye shining brighter, “Of course, I will be delighted to have you here. By Friday I should be able to go through all the possible rooms for you so you can look around and have a better idea of it.”

They agreed and after saying their goodbyes went on their way, Nightmare letting them choose the music in the car as they chattered, clearly trying to distract themselves from the place they were heading back to.

When they reached the place Nightmare stopped them for a moment, observed by the caretakers, “No matter what happens, no matter what is wrong, I will help you, just call me. I won’t judge you.”

They nodded, deeply touched by the gesture and went inside, waving at Nightmare who left after he was sure they were safe.

“He still didn’t give up trying for you three? Didn’t scare him off yet?” Dolores asked, looking down at them with a frown. They didn’t deign her words with an answer and just headed to their room. Even though the guest room at Nightmare’s had less furniture, this room felt more empty for some reason.

They really couldn’t wait to see Nightmare again.

-------------

The occasion came across on Monday during lunch when one of the kids bullied Dust to the point of him having a panic attack and Killer snapping and jumping at him. Horror managed to tear Killer from him after one hit but still the damage was done and the brat was demanding his parents come here and they are punished.

While Dust and Killer were dragged to the principal, Dust still hyperventilating and crying, clinging to Killer, Horror took out his phone and messaged Nightmare about the situation. He didn’t know if Nightmare would be able to do anything but he just didn’t know what to do. Killer already was in enough trouble that he didn’t know what would happen if the orphanage director were to find out about today.

He definitely didn’t expect Nightmare to immediately respond that he’s on his way.

He moved to the front door of the school, sure that Nightmare knew where they were attending from their files and waited. Thanks to that he saw Nightmare drifting into the front of the school on a motorcycle. He jumped off swiftly and ran towards Horror, hurriedly taking off his helmet, “Lead the way and let’s hope they listen to the voice of reason above some spoiled brat.”

Horror nodded and headed towards the principal’s office, “You have a motorcycle?” He asked to distract himself.

Nightmare quirked a smile, “Yes, I prefer it but when I expect passengers or baggage I take the car. I was out and immediately headed here.” He said softly and paused in front of the office from within the yelling of adults could be heard, “I will go inside, you just wait here.” He said calmly and barged inside without knocking, the yelling breaking off.

The skeleton didn’t pay any attention to the kid holding a bloodied paper towel to his nose, nor his frantic parents. What he noticed was an extremely agitated Killer holding crying Dust. He moved to kneel in front of them and took Dust’s face in his hands, “Dust, do you hear me?” When he got a small nod he smiled softly, “Good, everything is going to be alright, just breathe. You are not in trouble.”

One of the adults behind him scoffed, but he ignored them in favor of Dust who clutched at his sleeves, “K-killer? Horror?”

“They are not in trouble either, maybe Killer a little but I will deal with that.” He let one of his tentacles appear and used it to hand Dust a handkerchief, “Go and wait outside, remember to take slow deep breaths.”

Dust nodded and left the room, sitting with Horror. Nightmare didn’t argue when Killer didn’t move as it would be good to keep an eye on him and he needed to hear more details about what happened.

“Who are you?” One of the brat’s parents asked, his mother who was hugging him, the young cat monster glaring at Killer from her arms.

“I’m Nightmare Noctem. Their emergency contact for when it’s best to not unnecessarily involve the orphanage.” He lied effortlessly, casting a sideways glance at frowning Killer, “I was contacted by Horror and came before the situation took an one-sided turn.”

“What one-sided turn?! This brat hit my son!” The kid's father yelled, pointing a finger at Killer.

Nightmare calmly sat down next to Killer and looked impassively at the man, “Then why was he within the hitting distance?” He raised his hand to stop any arguments, “Oh, don’t misunderstand me, I don’t condone his violence but one was clear. Something triggered a serious panic attack in Dust and all Killer tried to do was get rid of that factor, your child. Which means that Killer did it in an honest effort to protect Dust who may have very well landed in the hospital due to your spawn’s behaviour.” He looked at Killer, “What did he do, Killer?”

The teen took a deep breath, recognizing that Nightmare was on his side, that he didn’t jump to conclusions and trusted him, “He came to our table and took out a plastic gun, started waving it around. When Dust noticed he started panicking. Horror told him to leave but instead he pointed it at Dust and pretended to pull the trigger. That made Dust break down.”

Nightmare sighed and rubbed his face. He handed Killer a few dollars, “Go and get Dust something sweet to drink, he will need it after the panic attack. Keep the rest.” Once Killer left the room he looked at the adults and the lone child left, all terrified at the cold gaze, “Now, I’m sure that we all know who the real perpetrator is here. The child didn’t leave even after being asked to, leaving him fully at fault for his own injuries. If I was legally Dust’s guardian I would have pressed charges against him for it.” He crossed his legs and looked coldly at the father, “Are you going to control your child? Why did he even have a plastic gun at school in the first place? Is he a little baby bringing his favorite toys to school? Maybe he should be reinstated in kindergarten? Although my ten year old nephew has more control than he does, that doesn’t bode well for your son leaving it before well into his twenties.”

The principal that until this moment stayed quiet cleared his throat, “I’m sure this can be reasonably taken care of…”

Nightmare let a growl slip as he looked at him, “If you plan on putting the full blame on Killer I think I’m going to involve my lawyer. I’m not saying he should go off with no punishment but it needs to be noted he is not the one who carries most of the blame. This whole situation would not have happened if he didn’t cause Dust’s panic attack. He caused much more harm than Killer.”

“What!? My angel did nothing wrong!” The woman screeched, flinching when Nightmare glared at her.

“You were here when I had to talk Dust down from his panic or were you too far up your own ass? Skeletons don’t have lungs but we still need to breathe to keep our magic flowing. If he went too deep in his panic there was a risk of him passing out or worse. Your brat has a scratch on his face, not even a broken nose.”

The principal cleared his throat, “I believe you made your point mister Nightmare. I recognize now that Killer’s fault is not as severe as my other student’s but he still reacted violently.”

“Then why is he not under the school therapist’s care? A punishment won’t help in this case, he needs to learn control and redirection, not how to bottle it all up in fear of punishment. I can handle the discipline, you take care that he can talk over his emotions at school while I look for a specialist for him.”

The principal agreed with a nod, “Is a week of detention enough of a punishment for what was done to Dust?”

Nightmare nodded, “For first offence, yes. If it happens again I will be pressing charges” He said calmly and got up, “I will let you talk over the details while I tell the boys your decision.” He said and bowed slightly before leaving the office.

He found the three waiting for him, Dust leaning against Horror while sipping on juice. They looked at him for the verdict, “The kid gets a week of detention. Killer will have to talk to the school therapist and be punished by me. We can talk about it later though. Do you have classes now?”

They shook their heads, “I have PE now but I’m excused from it. Dust has homeroom class, not missing anything. Killer has a free spot.” Horror said softly.

Nightmare smiled, “Then we can talk your punishment over now Killer. I want you to write me a paragraph on how else could that situation be resolved without violence. No limits on length and I want you to think about it honestly. Even if you think there is no other way, I still want you to explain why you think so. Is that understood?”

Killer nodded sheepishly, “Can I give it to you on the weekend?”

“Of course. For right now I think you should eat something, after all your lunch was interrupted quite brutally.” The adult said as he helped Dust stand up on shaky legs. They spent the time together until the next class started and the three had to go. Nightmare left them with extra money for lunch for the week, recognizing that here as well, the portions they were given were not enough for Horror whose concentration rose with Nightmare’s additions to his diet.

They were slowly coming to a decision, they just didn’t know when to tell Nightmare…

-----------

On Friday the three were leaving the building, eager to see Nightmare at the orphanage only to see him in front of the school, leaning against his car. He waved at them with a smile, “I was a bit too eager and came to the orphanage just in time to see Dolores have a temper tantrum. I asked one of the caretakers to fetch me your bags and decided we can avoid the old hag for the day.”

Killer chuckled and agreed, Miss Dolores could really get on his nerves sometimes with her screeching. They got in the car and joined the traffic, “Is there anywhere you want to go before heading home?” Nightmare asked while Dust, who this time was in the front, was looking for the right radio station.

“Can we get takeout for dinner?” Killer asked eagerly.

Nightmare chuckled and nodded, “Any preferences?”

Horror hummed, “Chinese?”

Nightmare changed the lane with a smile, “I know a good place. We can order there and take it with us back home.” He said as his fingers tapped the steering wheel in time with the song that just started.

“Is Dream and the others there this time as well?” Killer asked as he looked through the window, his soul a lazy circle.

Nightmare shook his head, “No, the kids are with Stretch and Dream is working today. But if you want I can call them.”

The three immediately refused, Dust explaining further, “No, we want to spend some time with just you… if it’s alright.”

Nightmare smiled wide, “Of course, we can look at the rooms, I think there is a set you may like after it gets properly furnished and renovated, mostly just painting.”

Horror hummed and whispered to Killer next to him, “When are we telling him?” Killer whispered back ‘ soon ’ and the three fell silent until they got to the chinese restaurant.

They looked at the massive menu, lost for what to order. Nightmare chuckled, “How spicy can it get?”

Horror fidgeted, “Not too much, I can’t handle it.”

Nightmare nodded with an understanding smile, “Of course. How about I order one of everything that’s on the mild side and we share it between each other so you can try a bit of everything and the next time you will know what you like.” The three agreed to the idea and let Nightmare place the order, sitting down at one of the tables to wait for the food to be prepared.

Horror noticed an ice-cream stand next to the restaurant but shook his head, not wanting to ask for too much. He wasn’t aware that Nightmare noticed his gaze, “How about you three go and get yourself a treat while I wait for the order?” He asked, handing them some money. Nightmare hated those that caused Horror to react so strongly when food was mentioned, he should never feel so insecure that any mention of it brought his mood up. They will work on it, but for now Nightmare can just be vigilant and make sure the trauma doesn’t deepen.

He watched as the three bought themselves ice-cream and chatted while eating. He could see the secretive glances they threw at him and was curious about it but he knew sooner or later he would find out.

It didn’t take too long for the food to be prepared, for which Nightmare tipped them and headed out, calling the boys to the car. The trip was fast as the heaviest traffic ended and soon all the boxes with food were spread out on the table and they were sampling everything, under Nightmare’s stern gaze not avoiding the vegetables.

“How is your punishment Killer? All done?” Nightmare asked with a smirk.

Killer blushed and nodded, “I can show it to you later… not now.”

Nightmare nodded and engaged them in a conversation about classes and how they were doing, Killer gladly changing the topic. The conversation flowed, without any issues Nightmare would change the topic whenever they seemed uncomfortable or unwilling to share something, he didn’t push for information.

In moments like this Nightmare really felt like he was their parent already.

The cleanup after the dinner was easy, just recycling all the boxes and putting the cutlery into the sink. They wanted to go ahead to the garden but Nightmare called for them to follow him onto the first floor, “My room is the one with the moon carved into the door. Dream’s room has the sun, that was our mother’s idea. I think this room will be of interest to you three.” He said, opening a dark mahogany door.

They went inside to see a big living room with four sets of doors leading further inside. One was clearly leading to the bathroom, so the other three…

“I thought you may enjoy the closeness while also getting some privacy. I thought to put couches and desks in this room as I know you prefer to study together, but you are all growing and need your own space, thus the separate rooms.” Nightmare said calmly, looking around the dusty space, “I know it needs to be refreshed and refurnished but just in terms of space… do you think those would be fitting for you?” He asked quietly, too nervous to look at the teens.

The three looked around and checked the bathroom and the bedrooms. They nodded at one another and returned to Nightmare whose lone eye was looking everywhere but at them. He was nervous and no wonder… It was quite literally like asking again if they want to stay with him, if they accept him as a parent.

Neither knew exactly how to tell him they accepted but Dust pushed through it and hugged Nightmare with shaking arms, begging in his mind he understood at least a bit what it all meant to them. He relaxed when the hug was returned, a hand rubbing his skull gently. He could feel when Killer and Horror joined the hug and chuckled when tentacles grew out of Nightmare’s back and wrapped around them all in a warm hug.

“When can we live here?” Killer whispered to then grunt as Nightmare squeezed them tighter.

“I will take care of all the paperwork and you should be able to start living here by next weekend. I can even help you change schools if you want to start fresh somewhere else.” Nightmare said with a tight throat. They suspected he was trying very hard not to cry in front of them.

“Yeah, a new school would be nice.” Dust whispered as he rubbed Nightmare’s back. It was nice knowing that they weren’t the only ones happy about the adoption.

Their hug was interrupted by Nightmare’s phone ringing. They let go of the adult who subtly rubbed his eye and picked up the phone, “Nightmare speaking, how can I help you?... What do you mean by a weird man? Where is Stretch?” Nightmare frowned and started rummaging in his pocket for a notepad and a pen, “Alright, I get it… I will be there soon, don’t move anywhere and stay quiet, I will be there shortly.” He hung up and called the police, observed by the other three that were now openly worried, “Hello, my name is Nightmare Noctem. I just got a call from my nephew who’s at his friend’s house for a sleepover. He says someone broke into the house, I want you to send a patrol to XXXXX at XXXXX street. I’m also heading there. Thank you.”

After the call finished, Nightmare looked at the teens, “I’m sorry, I need to go. It’s an emergency. Please look at the rooms and maybe plan how you want them to look while I deal with that. If anything happens please call me immediately.”

After they nodded, Nightmare ran off, leaving them to their nervous fumbling around. Ink was a nice kid and so were Cross and Blue, they can’t fathom the idea of anything happening to them. They indeed tried to distract themselves by looking at the rooms. The furniture looked old but sturdy, made from solid wood and just in need of some dusting and a polish.

“You think Nightmare will let us keep those beds or rather swap them for something smaller… I kinda wanna carve in those bedposts.” Killer said quietly, his mood subdued.

Dust smiled weakly, “I hope he does, they are so much bigger than those at the orphanage and look so comfy.” Horror just nodded in agreement as he sat on one and it didn’t even creak.

They just sat in silence after that, worrying about the kids and if Nightmare could handle it.

It was an hour later when Horror’s phone rang. They saw it was from Nightmare and picked up, hearing sirens in the background, “Nightmare?”

“I’m alright, the kids are also good. Stretch left only for a bit to fetch some food from the nearby shop when someone broke in and tried to rob the house. Stretch left his phone and Ink used it to call me. I invited them home as his door lock was smashed and called someone to replace it. It will be done tonight but I will feel more comfortable knowing they are safe… do you mind?”

“Nah, it’s good you invited them here for the night.” Killer said with a relieved smile, the others also relaxing at the good news.

“We will be back soon. Do you want me to fetch anything on the way?” Nightmare asked and they could hear Ink yelling ‘gummy bears’ in the background.

“Some snacks would be nice, so we can watch a movie tonight or something.” Dust said with a hopeful tone.

“Sure, I will get some. If you have any specific ones you like, message me the list so I don’t forget anything. See you soon.”

“Bye!” They chorused and hung up, in much better spirits. To not wait uselessly they went to get a bath and change into sleeping clothes so they can stay up longer without worrying about it. By the time all three of them were done Nightmare and Stretch were carrying bags into the house while the kids ran in. Ink immediately jumped towards Horror who was big enough to catch him while Blue and Cross, much calmer, went for a hug from the other two.

“Are we really going to be cousins now?!” Ink asked with an excited voice.

The three looked at the sheepish Nightmare, “He wheedled it out of me, I’m sorry if you didn’t want anyone to know yet.”

Horror smiled softly at Ink who didn’t tear his eyes from him, only now was sporting a wide grin, “It’s not a problem… so… a movie?”

Nightmare chuckled, “Get into the living room and choose a movie while me and Stretch prepare the snacks.”

-------------

The rest of the night went calmly and soon the teens were settled in the guest room, Nightmare bringing them tea again.

“Is there anything you want to talk about tonight?” Nightmare asked softly, sitting down on Dust’s bed as the closest one.

“Your negativity disorder… did it hurt when it appeared?” Killer asked with a small frown.

Nightmare smiled weakly, “I suspected you would ask soon… Did you get details from Stretch?” After they nodded he continued, “I was mostly in shock and anger that numbed the pain. It was the month in the hospital that I felt the most pain, they couldn’t constantly keep me on painkillers. It was also hard to get used to being blind in one eye. Dream was much help during this time.”

Killer nodded and sipped on his tea while Dust shifted to lean against Nightmare’s side, the adult hugging him gently, “Is your work hard?”

Nightmare hummed, “Well, not above my abilities. There are difficult days of course, but with trustworthy coworkers I can pull through.”

Horror shifted on the bed, “Do you have any hobbies?”

Nightmare chuckled, “A few, reading, yoga, piano… I learned violin in school, but didn’t feel like picking it up again.” He sipped on his tea and continued, “The school I want to move you to is one me and Dream graduated from, there are a lot of clubs you can choose from to develop your interests. It’s where Dream picked up the idea of becoming a nurse.”

Killer perked up, “Dream is a nurse? Which hospital?”

The adult nodded, “Yes, the general hospital, he works in pediatrics. I took over the family's business and decided to start a brewery because well… I've wanted to have one since I was eighteen.” He admitted with a soft smile.

“Who will take over after you?” Dust asked quietly, followed by a yawn.

“I can just leave someone from outside of the family if needed but if any of you wants to take over I will be glad. No pressure about it, I want you to pursue whatever career you want.” Nightmare said, taking the empty cup from Dust’s lax hold, “You should sleep. I thought we could go shopping tomorrow for furniture and paint for your rooms.” Dust nodded and laid down, already falling asleep, Nightmare tugging the covers fully over him.

The adult then moved to Killer and Horror to take the cups from them, “Can we keep the beds that were in those rooms?” Killer asked as he laid down, Nightmare tucking him in as well.

“You can keep the frames, but I want to buy new mattresses, especially for Horror, he will need a firmer support for his spine.” He said softly. After Killer nodded he turned the light off, “Have a good night, boys.” He whispered and left.

------------

In the morning Dream came by to eat breakfast, catch up on the news and take Stretch and Blue home and then head to his own, leaving the ‘almost family’ alone. It wasn’t long until Nightmare chased them into the car and took them to a furniture department first.

“Look around. We certainly need new mattresses, three couches that can be made into a bed, three desks… Do you like the desks and closets in your rooms? And do you want to get any other furniture?” He started asking them, their heads spinning already. He noticed and backtracked, “Let’s start with mattresses and the bedding. Then we will go from there.”

Nightmare let them choose anything they wanted, arranging for the delivery without question, even when Killer chose only black beddings or Dust avoided grey at all cost. Horror stuck to soft pastels and trusted Nightmare when he voted against a soft mattress, instead pointing to a firmer one, the other two getting similar ones.

They then chose three simple leather couches and a matching coffee table and desks with wood in the same shade.

The shopping was calm, and they took plenty of breaks.

After all they could get here was found and all the deliveries set up Nightmare took them to a restaurant nearby for lunch and off they went to look for paint and other things necessary for more technical renovations.

“How about you go take a look at the paints and wallpapers while I get wood polish, paint brushes and other necessities like that? Just do me a favor and don’t choose too dark colors, especially you Killer. Dark furniture and linens matched with dark walls will be too oppressive… at least one lightly colored wall.” He said with a hopeful tone.

Killer chuckled, “Alright, I promise. We will be alright so take your time.” He waved the adult off and with the other two headed towards the right aisle, Nightmare heading in the other direction.

“Any ideas on what we want?” Killer asked as he looked at the multitude of cans.

“I want green… a dark one and maybe some light ones on two walls.” Dust said softly, looking overwhelmed over all the choices.

Horror hummed, “Soft… maybe blue or purple… maybe a wallpaper.” He mumbled as his red eye shifted around.

They really weren’t used to having a say in all of this, it was a lot in a nice but also slightly overwhelming way. They were glad when Nightmare came and started gently helping them with the choices. In the end Killer settled on painting one wall a deep red while the other three will be covered in black and white tartan wallpaper, Horror chose soft blues for all walls and Dust decided on two walls in light green and two in dark forest green. Nightmare added white paint and wallpaper glue to the cart as well and they moved to looking for more items from his detailed list.

“Are we going to be painting it today?” Killer asked with an eager grin.

Nightmare hummed, “If you want. I’m sure I can lend you some clothes that I don’t mind getting the paint on. We will start with covering everything too.”

They were almost at the check-out when they noticed Dust separated from them. After a brief moment of panic they found him in the lighting section, looking at some fairy lights.

“Dust, you shouldn’t walk off like that…” Nightmare admonished, getting a murmured apology, “Did you want to get some for your room?” Dust nodded fiddling with the box of the lights. Nightmare nodded to himself and took the box from him, putting it in the cart, “Grab any you like, if you get more ideas later we can just come by again or order through the internet. Never hesitate to ask if you want anything. I won’t spoil you rotten but I’m not going to refuse any and all of your requests.” He said calmly. Dust nodded sheepishly and hugged Nightmare briefly before joining Killer and Horror on their way to the register.

They almost balked at the price of everything added together but Nightmare didn’t even flinch… although with his two businesses he probably made enough to not worry about it.

--------------

Back at home they changed into Nightmare’s old clothes and wrapped the furniture in foil before getting to painting. The darker walls were to first get a layer or two of white so the old color didn’t bleed through. They each took care of their room while Nightmare took care of their private living room and the bathroom that didn’t need as much done.

They made several breaks for snacks and drinks and when Horror, not used to much activity, got tired Nightmare didn’t mind him taking all the breaks he needed, using it as an opportunity to talk more with the quiet teen. Horror clearly preferred to listen over speaking, even more so than Dust but Nightmare didn’t mind, not hurrying the other up.

Sometimes Dust would come by, asking Nightmare for help with reaching the higher spots and Killer would try to wheedle Nightmare into letting him handle the wallpaper instead of calling a specialist later in the week.

Nightmare shot a few secret pictures of the boys covered in splotches of paint, chuckling at their behavior, happy to see them so carefree despite their past. He forced himself to grow up too fast, not willing to trust any adults, not after he saw what happened to Dream, didn’t let himself really be a child… He wanted those three to trust him enough to alway be this carefree, to not let what was left of their innocence die.

He will walk through hell for his family.

Nightmare was torn out of his thoughts when he felt a hand splay on his back. He turned to look at Killer who was already running off with a mischievous grin and then angled his head to find a white handprint on his old sweatshirt. He chuckled and waved at Killer who was peeking from behind the door to his room, “If you have time to be using the paint like that I suspect you can help Horror. The faster we finish what we can today the faster we get to sleep and enjoy tomorrow.”

Killer let out an exaggerated groan and went to help Horror who after rest was again painting his walls.

-------------

The weekend passed without any further issues and Nightmare promised that by the time the documents are all signed they can move in.

While they were at school Nightmare was starting the process of adoption and had planned a meeting with the principal of the school he plans on transferring them to. Nightmare was extremely busy with it all and yet he still found time to chat with them over the phone.

“I’m glad we will change schools soon, I just can’t handle all the teachers looking at us like we are the worst students in the world. Our grades are not failing and… Horror and Dust never do anything to warrant this kind of behavior, they are not like me.” Killer ranted, glad to have the phone now, despite his previous doubts.

Nightmare hummed, “I understand, they should treat none of you like that, no matter the circumstances. I need you to remember that, if anyone treats you unfairly at your new school, I want you to tell me, so it can be nipped in the bud. You deserve to be happy and school is a place of learning, it can’t be done successfully unless it’s got a calm and comfortable atmosphere.”

Killer chuckled, “Sure, but don’t you expect a bit too much from the education system?”

Nightmare tutted, “I expect the best if I am to trust them with my family. And of course I expect the best from the school I myself graduated from.” He sighed, “Look, I don’t want you to stress out about getting all A’s in school, I just want you to do your best in the best environment that will respect the fact you are individuals with your strengths and weaknesses.”

Killer hummed, “Thanks, that means a lot. How is all the legal mess going?”

“Slowly forward. The school at least agreed to accept you in the middle of the semester. For the adoption, they want me to get a few documents that will prove I’m fit to take care of problematic children. ” Nightmare said and Killer could clearly feel he was mocking someone’s words.

“Is it going to take longer because of that?” He asked worried. All three of them wanted out of here.

“Longer? Not on my watch. More complicated than I thought, certainly.” Nightmare said in a reassuring tone, “Either way, homework done? Wouldn’t want you to earn detention in the last week of that school.”

Killer laughed, “Nah, not yet. I’m gonna go and do that, see you soon.”

“Have a good night… son.” Nightmare said hesitantly and hung up before Killer could answer. Due to that he didn’t hear the happy chuckle that bubbled up from Killer as the teen put his phone down.

--------------

The three missed Nightmare’s almost daily visits but they understood it was a hectic week for the adult and that on Friday, maybe a day later they will have a forever home with him… just a day more till Friday.

Right now they were heading towards the lunch hall but walking by the principal’s office they bumped into Nightmare who was just leaving, “Good afternoon, boys.”

“Hi… what were you doing there?” Dust asked, looking over Nightmare to see the door to the principal’s office closing.

“I can now with 100% certainty say that from next week you are not going to attend this school. I just finished the process for it. If Dolores doesn’t find another irrational loophole I can pick you and your belongings up tomorrow after school.” He said with a kind smile, “Going to lunch?”

They nodded and started walking with Nightmare by their side. Killer kept casting amused looks at Nightmare, remembering their talk from Monday, “Can you stay and eat with us… pops?” He teased with a smirk, noting how there was a slight blush on Nightmare’s face now.

“I wish I could, but sadly I have more paperwork to go through. I’m meeting with the doctor specialized in soul resonance that Ink is seeing to find out if he’s willing to take on another patient. After that… I guess I should ask you before deciding.” He paused and rubbed his hidden eye, “I am seeing a therapist, for many reasons and was wondering if you would be alright with seeing the same one as me or if you would like someone else. There is no chance for anything you say to them to leak out but I understand if you would feel uncomfortable with them.”

Dust fidgeted with his sleeves, “And if we don’t like that therapist?”

“Then of course we can look for someone you like. I’m just talking about giving it a try, if it’s a good fit.”

Killer shrugged, “I don’t mind. If you trust them to not spill your secrets to the press I guess we can trust them to not leak ours to you.” Horror and Dust nodded to that.

Nightmare smiled, “Alright, I will talk to them about it. I am also moving your medical records to our family doctor. Dream and his kids also go to him and we trust his abilities.”

They stopped just before reaching the lunch hall, “We trust you with those decisions but… thanks for asking, it’s nice… to be included.” Horror said with a small smile.

Nightmare hugged them and winked, “We broken ones gotta stick together. Someone’s gotta gather the pieces.” He whispered and left. The teens wholeheartedly agreed with him but didn’t have time to further think about it as they headed for lunch.

-------------

It was finally Friday and Dolores told them to pack their things just as they came back from school, meaning Nightmare finally got through all the diplomatic bullshit and they were going to live with him.

After packing their meager belongings they waited in the main hall, Dolores frowning as if she was chewing lemons and Mary smiling happily as they all waited for Nightmare. They all heard the car pull up and saw the skeleton coming to the building, Dust vibrating happily while Killer and Horror beamed, all three happy to finally be leaving this place.

“Ready, boys? It’s the last chance to back out.” Nightmare said with a nervous expression.

Killer barked out a laugh, “Yeah, no, let’s get out of here.”

Nightmare smiled and relaxed minutely to then look at the two caretakers, “Thank you for watching over them, I will be taking over from now on.” He said with a slight bow of his head and followed the boys outside, helping them put their bags into the trunk.

The trip was relatively calm with the boys fidgeting in their seats. Nightmare was glad that they felt so eager. He smirked and continued to drive.

When they reached the house the teens saw the two cars and expected to see Dream, Stretch and the kids, but they did not expect what they saw inside.

In the living room was a banner with ‘WELCOME HOME!’ in colorful letters and a feast laid on the table with gifts.

Nightmare stood behind the stunned teens, “Welcome home, boys.” He said with a soft voice, accepting the armfull of skeletons when they crashed into him.

He can’t wait to see them heal and grow.
