Daisy Johnson One Shots

Chapter 64: The Smile in the Code - part 4

Chapter Text

The sun was streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse when Pepper finally emerged from her room. She stopped dead in the living area, a soft smile tugging at her lips.

Tony and Skye were sprawled across the massive Italian leather sofa in a tangle of limbs and discarded schematics. An empty box of Froot Loops sat on the coffee table next to a half-disassembled Stark-Pad. Skye’s head was resting on Tony’s shoulder, and Tony’s arm was draped protectively over her, his thumb still resting near a holographic projector.

It was the quietest the Tower had been in weeks. Over the next few months, that chaos became the new "normal." Skye found a rhythm she never thought possible: she spent her mornings at a private school where she was actually challenged, her afternoons in the lab "optimizing" Tony’s flight stabilizers, and her evenings curled up with Pepper, learning that "home" wasn't a place you had to earn.

She was a Stark in every way that mattered. She had the sarcasm, the brilliant mind, and—for the first time—she had the safety.

But the old shadows of St. Agnes were hard to erase completely.

One rainy Tuesday, Skye was tucked into her bed, the high-end Egyptian cotton sheets a far cry from the scratchy wool of the orphanage. Pepper was sitting on the edge of the mattress, smoothing back Skye’s hair after they’d spent an hour talking about a history project.

"You did a great job today, Skye," Pepper whispered, leaning down to kiss her forehead. "I’m so proud of you."

Skye, half-asleep and feeling a warmth in her chest she couldn't describe, let out a long, contented sigh. "Thanks, Mom. Goodnight."

The room went deathly silent.

Pepper froze, her breath hitching. The word hung in the air, heavy and beautiful. Slowly, Pepper’s eyes welled up, and a single, choked sob escaped her throat. She covered her mouth with her hand, tears streaming down her face—tears of overwhelming, pure joy.

But Skye didn't see joy.

Skye’s eyes snapped open. In her mind, she had just crossed an invisible, forbidden line. She’d presumed. She’d been too much. She’d called the CEO of a global conglomerate a name she didn't have the right to use.

"I'm sorry!" Skye scrambled backward, her back hitting the headboard with a thud. Her breathing turned into a sharp, terrifying wheeze. "I didn't mean it—I moved too fast, I know, I’ll take it back. Please don't cry, please don't be mad. I’ll go pack, I’ll call the social worker myself—"

"Skye, no!" Pepper tried to reach for her, but the tears were still falling, which only fueled Skye’s hysteria.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry," Skye chanted, her face turning a ghostly white. She was hyperventilating, her small hands clutching at her chest as she started to retch from the sheer force of the panic. "I ruined it. I ruined everything."

"What’s the alarm? JARVIS said heart rates were—" Tony skidded into the room, his repulsor gauntlet halfway on before he saw the scene. He saw Pepper in tears and Skye in the middle of a full-blown medical emergency.

He didn't hesitate. He dived onto the bed, ignoring the expensive bedding, and pulled Skye directly into his lap, pinning her arms gently so she couldn't scratch at her own skin.

"Kid, look at me. Breathe. Match me," Tony commanded, his voice loud and grounding. "In... out. In... out. You’re not going anywhere. Nobody is mad."

"I called her... I called her 'Mom,'" Skye choked out between gasps, her eyes unfocused. "She’s crying. I broke the rules."

Tony looked up at Pepper, whose heart was breaking for the terrified girl. He reached out a hand, pulling Pepper into the huddle, too.

"Skye, look at her," Tony said firmly. "She’s not crying because she’s mad. She’s crying because that’s the best thing she’s ever heard. You didn't break a rule, you just finished the circuit. You’re her kid. You’re our kid."

Pepper leaned in, taking Skye’s face in her hands, her voice trembling but fierce. "Skye, I have wanted you to call me that since the moment I saw your grumpy little face in that orphanage. I’m crying because I’m happy. I love you."

Skye’s breathing hitched, then slowed. She looked from Pepper’s tear-stained, smiling face to Tony’s determined, protective expression. The panic began to recede, leaving her exhausted and trembling.

"You're not... sending me back?" Skye whispered.

"Not for all the Arc Reactors in the world," Tony said, kissing the top of her head and holding her tighter. "Now, if you’re finished trying to vibrate the building apart, I think we all need some very unhealthy midnight pancakes."

Skye let out a final, shaky breath and buried her face in Pepper’s neck. "Okay," she whispered. "Thanks... Mom."

Pepper let out a fresh sob, but this time, she laughed through it, holding her daughter close while Tony leaned his head against them both—the mechanic who finally found the one thing he couldn't build, but was lucky enough to find.
