Work Text:
Shouta Aizawa sat down on the edge of a roof to put his headphones in his ears. The moon rose steadily in front of him as he turned on the Put Your Hand up Radio app. Yes Hizashi made him get it. However he kept the app because he found his friend turned roommate's voice soothing. The night was pleasantly warm considering the rain storm that was promised to come later. The watch on his wrist read 23:45. It was almost time for Hizashi's radio show to finish for the night.
He closed his eyes and listened to his dorky best friend (crush? No it was way more than a crush at this point), as he rambled excitedly about a new hero that had debuted that morning. He tuned out the info dump to instead think of the yellow cockatoo running the show.
Shouta had first noticed his feelings for Hizashi in their first year at UA. What had initially started as disdain and annoyance, had become fondness and even a fancy for the loud blond. Shouta had only just noticed after seeing him in action during the sports festival. Those feelings had only grown from there. Now, almost 10 years later, at nearly 26 years old, and with the unofficial title of number one underground pro hero to his name; Here he was still head over heels for his best friend. Nemuri liked to tease him about it every chance she got him alone. She had figured it out before he had even realized his feelings were ones of attraction. She informed him that he was really bad at hiding them. Which was fine because apparently Hizashi was just really stupid.
Shouta knew that there was a very small chance Hizashi had actually noticed his feelings, and absolutely no way the other man reciprocated those feelings. Hizashi flirted with everyone, even Shouta. But that didn't mean he was romantically interested in him. Take this morning for example. Hizashi had playfully threatened to kiss him if he didn't promise to tune into the radio station and listen to the final song he planned on playing that night. Shouta shook his head with a small sad smile at the memory. He couldn't exactly tell his friend that he'd love to kiss him, actually he'd love to do other things to him too, but no, he just can't let himself imagine. There was no way the man had actually meant it. Despite the way Shouta has caught the blond looking at him. On multiple times when he thinks he's not looking, Hizashi will openly stare. But that must be an accident. Right? He ignores that one time in the boys' locker room when he caught a red-faced Hizashi staring at his ass when he bent over. Hizashi had not looked away when he was caught. Shouta ignores all of this and tells himself that he'll just let Hizashi be blissfully unaware while he suffers in silence all alone. He tunes back in to hear Hizashi finishing his rant.
"Now listeners, I've got a special song set up to close out the hour. One written and recorded by yours truly!" Shouta was excited to hear this new song, even if he’d never show it. Hizashi had refused to tell him anything about it or even let him listen to it. The only tidbit he would offer is that it was written for his “special someone.”
Shuota wasn't proud of the ugly feelings that had been building a nest in his chest every time he heard Hizashi talk about his super secret special someone. But he shoved them down and tried to be excited for his friend. He was legitimately excited to hear this song, even if he was jealous of this mysterious special someone.
"First though, I need to tell you all about this song and the person it was written for. I wrote this song for someone that I admire. I've actually been in love with them for a long time now. I met them in high school and immediately started crushing on them. They don't know about my feelings or the song I'm about to share with you listeners. I'm hoping they dont kill me later. So here goes nothing." A small pause and deep breath could be heard over the microphone.
"Kitten, this is for you. You've been there for me through the bad times and never judged me every time I fell apart in your living room. You care for me when I'm sick and even keep my favorite snacks in the cupboard for when I have a bad day; even though I know you hate them. I've loved you for a long time, and I think it's about time I tell you."
Shouta stopped breathing and nearly toppled off of the edge of the roof when Hizashi started that statement with his nickname. The name Hizashi had picked especially for him when he learned that Shouta didn't like spicy food. He had originally called him "Kitten Tongue" but had shortened it to just Kitten after he caught him playing with the alley cats after school a few weeks later. Shouta's breath slammed back into him as he dared to hope for the first time, that Hizashi might actually be talking about him.
"You took a risk inviting me into your apartment. I'm loud and obnoxious, and you enjoy your peace and quiet. You gave that all up when you invited me to come use your spare room permanently. Thank you for giving me a place to stay, and I'm sorry for all the miscommunications that came from that decision. Now that we've gotten it all figured out, I can finally tell you what was bothering me those first few weeks. I hate fighting with you, and I can't keep it a secret anymore. You are my special someone. I love you Kitten. This song's for you. Also please be gentle when I get home. I'd really like to keep all my limbs attached."
Shouta was speechless as he heard the first synthetic notes of music. The first thing he was going to do when he saw Hizashi again was punch that idiot's perfect face for sharing something so private with the general public on his radio show. After that, though, Shouta intended to kiss him till Hizashi couldn't remember his own name. All this time, it had been him. The "special someone" Shouta had been so jealous of was himself. He felt like an idiot.
" I remember days when loving you wasn't so hard.
From the moment that I saw you
I just knew that you had stolen my heart.
We'd be lying on the rooftop laughing
Just counting the stars
And now I wonder if you see them
In the sky from wherever you are.
So stay strong, and breathe in, and don't try to pretend
Nothing lasts forever in the end."
Shouta stared blankly at the building across from him as the first tears pool almost painfully in his eyes; not even flinching as they started running down his face. He couldn't even be bothered to wipe them away. Instead, he simply turned up the volume to better hear the lyrics written especially for him.
"Here in my arms is right where you belong
Slow dancing every night
And I hear your voice and I've known all along
That it's only a matter of time
Until you're here by my side
Cause you're the love of my life!
From the moment you were gone
Thing have never really been the same
In the middle of the night
I find myself calling out your name
But I know I can't take anymore
I can't walk away
I've been trying so hard to just let it go
And just take the blame
So stay strong, and breath in, and don't try to pretend
Nothing lasts forever in the end.
Here in my arms is right where you belong
Slow dancing every night.
And I hear your voice and
I've known all along
That it's only a matter of time
Until you're here by my side!
Cause your the love of my life
So stay strong, and breath in, and don't try to pretend
Nothing lasts forever in the end!
Here in my arms is right where you belong
Slow dancing every night.
And I hear your voice and
I've known all along
That it's only a matter of time
Until you're here by my side,
Until you're here by my side!
Cause you're the love of my life."
The music faded out and Shouta was left sobbing quite loudly as he listened to Hizashi's closing remarks. His wishes for all his listeners to "stay safe out there" fell on deaf ears. By the time he had finally signed out and turned the station over to his intern, Shouta had dried his eyes and was running across the rooftops toward their apartment.
***
Hizashi hesitantly pushed open the door to their apartment to find the entryway dark and cold. He shrugged off his bag and switched to his house slippers, padding into the dark kitchen and flipping on the light to make some hot chocolate. The cocoa was mixed and he was headed to the table when he heard the front door slam open down the hall. Shouta raced into the kitchen in his full hero costume. Not even stopping to change his shoes, which was one of his worst pet peeves.
Shouta's hair was more wind swept than normal and he was panting hard like he had run a great distance. His eyes were red, and they looked rather irritated. Whether from quirk usage or tears Hizashi did not know. They stood there staring at each other like a pair of deer in the headlights for a tense few minutes. Hizashi was too scared of rejection to dare speaking first so he kept quiet.
Shouta suddenly straightened to his full height before muttering, "Nope. I've changed my mind." Then he strode forward, yanking Hizashi roughly into his arms and pushing him up against the wall. Hizashi didn't even have time to let out a startled "eep" before Shouta's soft lips were locked on his in a heated kiss.
Shouta's lips tasted like the peppermint lip balm he loved. Hizashi now understood the pleasant tingle the peppermint caused. Teeth clashed and Shouta had his tongue exploring Hizashi's mouth before he could even start to process what was happening. When his brain finally finished buffering he was all too happy to kiss Shouta back with fervor. Their kisses gradually turned from the hot, heavy, fast ones to more soft, sweet, and long kisses. It gave Hizashi a chance to catch his breath before finally pulling back to look at Shota's slightly dazed eyes.
A breathy "Wow" was all he could manage before diving back in to kiss every inch of Shouta's flushed face.
"What did you change your mind on?" he asked in between soft kisses at the corners of Shouta's eyes. Shouta huffed before answering as Hizashi moved up to press feather light kisses into his hairline.
"I was going to punch your pretty face for saying all that mushy stuff on live radio, but then you looked so damn kissable standing like that im my kitchen. I couldn't resist.” Shouta paused, “how long have you been working on that one?" Hizashi's breath hitched and his brain still caught on the whole 'Shouta thinks I'm pretty' before it processed the question asked.
Hizashi hummed. "Um, I've had that chorus in my mind since our high school graduation. The versus came to me in pieces throughout the years." He continued peppering loving kisses all over Shouta's face between words. Shouta pulled away long enough to cup his face in callused hands, whisper out a quick "I love you too Hizashi" before he let out a soft growl and pulled him back down to capture his lips again. Hizashi melted, and decided that Shouta's lips were a drug he didn't mind being addicted to.
Epilogue
Hizashi walked around the gym bending down occasionally to pick up a few stray streamers off of the floor. As he watched Eri talk excitedly to Midoriya. She had been so attached to the green bean since they had finally brought her home from the hospital. Shouta didn't even have to ask him twice if they could adopt the little girl. Hizashi was all too excited to be the family that Eri needed. He was happy to see his husband so attached to her.
Shouta had been a little hesitant whenever Hizashi had brought up a family in the past. He hadn't needed to worry so much, Hizashi knew that Shouta would make a great father, and was only proved right every time he saw the two together. She had him wrapped around her little finger. The day they added Hitoshi to their little family only proved it more. Shouta was so gentil with their son behind the closed doors of their homw. Between the two traumatized kids, they had their hands full. Hizashi will never forget the day Hitoshi had accidentally called him Mom. Hiroshi had curled up on the couch in a spiral of self deprecation, and horror when he relized what he'd said. It had taken hours to finally get the kid to raise his head long enough for Hizashi to explain that he wasn't mad and had, in fact, liked the title.
It had been a hard one for Eri to understand, but every now and then she would let out a hesitant "Thanks Mom" that would leave him squealing for hours every time he thought of it. Now they all called him Mom, even Shouta sometimes used it just to see the blush travel all the way down his husband’s neck. Huzashi wouldn't have it any other way though. This was his family and he wouldn't trade them for anything.
Hizashi realized that he must have been lost in thought for quite a long time when a pair of strong arms snaked around his torso from behind. He screeched and whirled around to find his husband standing there with his arms still firmly wrapped around him. Hizashi quickly scanned the gym to find it empty, then relaxed in Shouta's arms, bending down a bit to press his ear to his toned chest. He loved these moments between them, even if they were few and far between. It’s hard to have small intimate moments when your relationship is a secret to most of the student body. Shouta began to slowly rock them back and forth. Then he opened his mouth and started singing a song that Hizashi knew all too well. Shouta's voice was significantly deeper than his, but Hizashi loved the ruggedly smooth way his song sounded on Shouta's lips.
"Here in my arms is right where you belong,
Slow dancing every night"
Shouta's husky voice crooned in his ear as he spun Hizashi out in a slow circle. Hizashi giggled as he returned to Shouta's chest, and Shouta continued his soft singing.
"And I hear your voice and I've known all along
That it's only a matter of time
Until you're here by my side"
Shouta pulled back to look Hizashi straight in the eyes as he stopped swaying. His eyes shone with the sparkling lights from the culture festival performance as he whispered the next line, with all the certainty in the whole world.
"Cause you're the love of my life" before leaning in to claim his husband's lips like it was the first time all over again. 'Yeah' Hizashi thought 'I definitely wouldn't change this for the world.'
