The aroma of coffee permeated throughout the shop, a familiar, comforting smell yet also a reminder of the taste he had lost.
He had hoped today would be the day, the day he would be able to taste again, he wanted desperately to be able to once again savour the complex bitterness of a steaming mug of coffee, and feel the tingling aftertaste left behind on his tongue as he swallows it down, get the magic of coffee back; but when he sits down with his cup there’s nothing... his taste buds emptier than the black abyss that is coffee.
