Work Text:

Dustin has always been a curious creature. He was always on a quest to ask questions, seek knowledge, analyze the data, and form an assessment. Such is the way of scientists, it's why they performed experiments, and Dustin was no stranger to that. He and Suzie were still madly in love, but had decided to take a break on their relationship to focus on getting into college with exams coming up. Dustin had been studying away, hoping to get into a college far, far away from Hawkins. He'd studied so much that he needed a breather or his brain would turn to mush.

Typically, when boys of his age wanted to relax they did something fun and mindless. For Lucas, that was shooting a couple hoops on the basketball court now that he had an athletic build. For Mike, it was journaling away, writing up campaigns for DnD for hours on end. For Will, it was drawing or painting or anything he could do with his hands that would become a stunning art piece in some fashion or form. For Dustin, he liked to conduct experiments. After all, one doesn't need much to be a scientist - just need a question, a hypothesis, and an experiment to disprove or prove said educated guess.

Dustin so happened to be daydreaming when an idea, rather a question, popped into his head. What's it like to kiss a boy?

As far as Dustin's concerned, it was quite the interesting conundrum. He knew that out of all of the Party, Dustin was the only one to have not kissed a boy. Lucas and Will were each other's first kiss, much to Mike's utter devastation. Apparently in the third grade, before Dustin came into the picture, Lucas and Will kissed one summer afternoon when Mike was forced to go on a Wheeler family vacation to his nana's house. They never told anyone until Will and Mike became an official couple, when Max truth or dared Will, and he admitted to Lucas being the one he kissed. Mike sulked for weeks about it.

Dustin figured kissing a boy must've not been so bad. Lucas was perfectly content in telling everyone Will was his first kiss and Mike acted like if he didn't cling to Will every second he'd die. So, Dustin made it his mission to kiss a boy and see if there really was a difference between kissing a girl. The next time the boys hung out, Dustin posed the question.

"Hey, Will. Can I kiss you? It's strictly for science." He said it so surgically, with his bluntness and carefree attitude that Lucas, Mike, and Will almost all fell out of their chairs after finishing up a campaign.

"Uh.... Sure?" Will answered, curling a brow in bemusement.

"Hey, hey, hey! Don't I get a say so?" Mike rises to his feet, glaring at Dustin in jealousy.

"But it's for science. Nothing more. Nothing less." Dustin countered.

"Aw, let them kiss Mike. One lil smooch is not gonna have Will leaving you for another man." Lucas cackled at Mike's disgruntlement.

"Pretty please! It'll be quick. Scout's honor." Dustin begged and Mike reluctantly consented.

"I'm still gonna countdown, though!" He hissed like a feral alley cat.

Lucas kept smiling from ear-to-ear as Mike fumed, arms crossed and foot anxiously tapping on the floor. Dustin and Will were standing right in front of each other. They locked eyes and Dustin couldn't help but chuckle some. Half of it was due to nerves, and the other was due to Mike's extremely furious face that Dustin found completely hilarious.

"Ready?" Will politely asked and Dustin nods. "Here goes."

They both lean in, faces inching nearer. Will started to close his eyes and Dustin mimicked him. Without looking at Mike's funny grumpy face, Dustin had stopped laughing. He focused on kissing Will, feeling their noses bump against each other gently. Their breaths tickling each other's flushed skin. The warmness of Will's lips connected with his - and Dustin had to admit - kissing a boy is very different than kissing a girl. It's actually incomparable to be honest.

"Five! Four!"

He tasted the softness of Will's lips, smelled Will's cologne, and felt the fringe of his hair meshing with his own luscious strands.

"Dude are you seriously counting down? I thought you were joking."

He felt a bounce in his stomach. As if rabbits had invaded his gut and were hopping about in excitement.

"Three! Two!"

Will briefly pulled away, only to return a fast peck to Dustin's lips one more time.

"One! That's it! You're done!" Mike had yanked Will into his arms possessively.

Dustin opened his eyes, humming to himself in thought, and taking out a tiny notepad so he could write his discoveries.

"Fascinating." He said in astonishment as Lucas shouts "Get a room!"

No longer than a second after Dustin and Will kissed, did Mike obnoxiously slide his lips against Will's to erase any trace of Dustin. Lucas shook his head at the public display of affection. Will was caught between beating Mike off, or just basking in the attention. Dustin was happily recording his findings while touching his tingling lips.

What's it like to kiss a boy? - It's not bad at all.

Notes:

Thanks for reading! Again this is one of my old Tumblr posts from way back, lol. But I'm a multishipper at its core and Dustin does not get the same amount of love like Lucas and Mike do when it comes to shipping Will with the boys. So, here's my remedy of that. A little Byerson food for the soul, but now I'm realizing I made canon ladies man Will also a player with the guys haha, poor Mike's jealousy. Feel free to leave a comment!
