Work Text:

As Scully's cancer progressed, there were moments when the reality of her deteriorating health weighed heavily upon them. The disease had a relentless grip, and its progression became more apparent with each passing day. They were running out of options and time. Hope had begun slipping away, and the ticking of the clock was nothing more than a bitter reminder.

Of what resided ahead.

Of endings instead of beginnings.

Mulder's heart ached as he witnessed Scully's strength waver under the weight of physical pain and exhaustion. Words failed, and the crumbling facade only highlighted the demon progressing through her. He could no longer tell if she was truly fighting, and he wouldn’t have blamed her if she wanted to give up. The once-vibrant spark in her eyes began to dim, replaced by the hollow gaze of a warrior battling an invisible enemy. He held her hand tightly, their universal language that yielded comfort and strength. Nevertheless, a sense of helplessness washed over him.

The selfishness took over, but actions betrayed him as he continued to bear witness to what he couldn’t control. The fire in her eyes nearly extinguished, and the long list of tests only made her bitter in daylight. Mulder wondered if Scully blamed him for her condition.

He was beginning to do so all on his own and wouldn’t have given it a second thought if she had uttered it.

As much as they fought for answers, the news they received grew increasingly grim. The treatments, once hopeful, now seemed like fleeting attempts to delay the inevitable.

Guilt was Mulder’s nightly vigil once again as he questioned if there was more he could have done, more sacrifices he could have made to protect her from his seemingly fruitless search for the truth. He replayed moments in his mind, wondering if he had missed something or if he had failed to recognize a clue that could have changed their trajectory.

Scully, ever perceptive, seemed to sense the anguish that consumed Mulder. She’d grown to know that part of him. It drove her crazy, and yet, she valued his ability to become so afflicted by pain that wasn’t his. It made her feel closer to him.

Even in the darkest hours, she clung to that belief, that reality.

He could sense there were words unsaid between them, likely to protect his fragile state of mind. "Mulder, I need you to understand that this is not your fault. That this was my choice."

Tears welled up in Mulder's eyes as he whispered, his voice choked with emotion. "I can't lose you, Scully. I need you here."

Scully's voice, though weakened, carried a determination that cut through the gloomy silence. "Mulder, our journey has always been one of facing the unknown. We can't predict the outcome. We can choose how we face it. I need to continue to fight."

Days turned into nights, and nights into days, as the shadows of the disease grew longer. Mulder and Scully clung to each other; in the depths of their anguish, they found a renewed appreciation for the simple joys they had taken for granted—the warmth of a touch, the comfort of a shared embrace.

As Scully's condition worsened, the fear that had always lingered in the background began to consume them both. Mulder watched helplessly as the woman he loved, his partner, his touchtone, battled a relentless enemy that threatened to extinguish her light.

One evening, as they sat together in a dimly lit room, Scully's voice trembled with vulnerability. "Mulder, I need you to promise me something."

Mulder's heart clenched, anticipating the weight of her request. "Anything, Scully. I'll do anything."

Scully's eyes glistened with tears as she mustered the strength to speak. "Promise me that no matter what happens, you will carry on. Find the truth, Mulder. Don't let my illness stop you from seeking the answers we've been chasing all these years."

Mulder's voice crackled, tears streaming down his face. "No, Scully. Please don’t ask me to do that. We’ll find a way. We always do.”

“I need you to find answers, Mulder, about what happened to me. About what gave me this damned disease.”

“You know I will go to the ends of the earth if it means I can save you from this.”

Scully's fingers brushed against his cheek, her touch a bittersweet reminder of the love they shared. She did know. "I need you to stop the bastards that did this."

Amid the anguish, they held on to each other, finding solace in the fragments of time they had left. Their love burned bright amidst the darkness, a testament to the power of their connection. They continued to face the uncertainty together, embracing each moment with a mixture of tenderness, sorrow, and unyielding hope.

Mulder found himself battling his demons in the depths of despair. He couldn’t burden Scully with how much this was affecting him. The weight of guilt, grief, and unspoken emotions threatened to consume him, pushing him into a spiral of self-destructive tendencies. Overwhelmed with guilt, grief, and unspoken feelings for his partner, he desperately tried to navigate his inner turmoil without burdening Scully further.

Night after night, he would retreat into solitude, seeking solace in the company of his demons. He turned to substances to numb the pain, a temporary escape from the harsh reality that surrounded him. The relief was fleeting, and the guilt that followed only intensified his anguish. He’d wake up each morning with the harsh reality hitting him like a ton of bricks. One night, he relished the weight of his weapon in his palm, desperate to make it all stop. His finger toyed with the trigger, and it had been Skinner’s rapping on the door that stopped him.

Reality came crashing down harder than Mulder ever wanted to utter.

He’d gotten too close, too willing to let go.

Though he may have been saved that night, Mulder continued to engage in risky behaviors, desperately searching for a release. He sought solace in encounters devoid of meaning, searching for a temporary distraction from the agony that consumed him. Each encounter left him feeling emptier, more disconnected from the person he truly longed for. Though they had yet to consummate their relationship, he couldn’t help but feel he had committed the ultimate act of betrayal.

Haunted by the fear of losing Scully, Mulder's addictive personality began to intensify. In his desperation, he sought solace in substance abuse, hoping to numb the anguish that consumed him. The lines between reality and his inner turmoil blurred as he indulged in risky behavior, searching for a temporary escape from the harsh reality that surrounded him.

Mulder's late nights grew longer, consumed by self-destructive tendencies and the allure of temporary oblivion. He frequented seedy bars, engaging in encounters that provided a fleeting sense of connection that left him emptier than before. He chased highs that only sank him deeper into the abyss, using substances to drown out the guilt and grief that threatened to devour him.

Another morning, Mulder awoke to his left hand bruised and bloodied without any recollection of the previous night. He pulled himself up from the floor, the sudden draft causing his gaze to fall on the broken window where he usually marked his midnight rendezvous. A large shard of glass rested on the floor, and as he looked at his palms, he traced the angry red line that ran dangerously close to his artery.

Scully, weakened by her illness but still keenly perceptive, could sense the darkness that loomed over Mulder. Despite her battle, she refused to let him suffer alone.

"Mulder, I see the pain you're carrying, but I won't let you destroy yourself."

Mulder, his eyes bloodshot and filled with a mixture of despair and guilt, looked up at Scully, his voice trembling. "I can't burden you with my demons, Scully. You're fighting your own battle."

Mulder's defenses crumbled, and his voice choked with emotion. "Scully, I don't know how to handle this. I don't know how to help you."

Scully took a step closer, pulling his hands into hers.

She inhaled sharply as she noticed the marks and bruising on his hands. "Mulder, I know this journey is difficult for both of us. We can't let it consume us. Your pain doesn't justify these destructive patterns. I need you to live. I need you to carry on where I can’t. Don’t give them the satisfaction."

Mulder's desperation only grew. "I can't lose you, Scully. You have this disease because of my reckless pursuits these past several years."

"I know. But Mulder, your unwavering determination—it has been everything to me. You can't carry this burden alone, and I can’t lose you. Not like this."

Mulder's heart ached at Scully's words, the weight of her love breaking through the walls he had built around himself. At that moment, he realized that he couldn't continue down this destructive path. Scully needed him, and he needed her. He needed to find a way. There had to be a way.

Mulder turned to therapy at Scully’s insistence, and though this was far from his first rodeo, he confronted the demons that had haunted him for so long. In the safe space of the therapist's office, he unraveled the layers of guilt and grief, slowly piecing together the fragments of his fractured soul. How could he ever explain that this was all the result of alien abduction and not just happenstance or a bad stroke of luck? That his reckless pursuit of little green men resulted in terminal consequences for his partner?

As Mulder fought his inner battles, Scully continued to fight her physical ones. She became his anchor, his guiding light, reminding him of the strength they shared. Through the darkest moments, she never wavered in her belief in him, offering her love and understanding as a lifeline to pull him back from the edge.

Mulder found himself tormented by guilt once again, questioning if there was more he could have done, more sacrifices he could have made to protect her.

Hello darkness, my old friend

I've come to talk with you again

Because a vision softly creeping

Left its seeds while I was sleeping

And the vision that was planted in my brain

His insomnia replayed moments in his mind, wondering if he had missed something if he had failed to recognize a clue that could have changed their trajectory.

In restless dreams, I walked alone

Narrow streets of cobblestone

'Neath the halo of a street lamp

I turned my collar to the cold and damp

When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light

That split the night, and touched the sound of silence

Scully, ever perceptive, sensed the anguish that consumed Mulder. She reached out to him, her touch gentle and laden with unspoken sorrow. "Mulder, you need to understand that this is not your fault. Cancer is a battle beyond our control."

Mulder's path to recovery was far from smooth. There were moments of relapse, where the weight of guilt and grief threatened to pull him under once again. But Scully remained steadfast, offering a guiding light when the darkness seemed overwhelming.

And in the naked light, I saw

Ten thousand people, maybe more

People talking without speaking

People hearing without listening

People writing songs that voices never shared

And no one dared disturb the sound of silence

When Scully had been cleared to return to work indefinitely, she insisted on coming to one of his therapy sessions with him. Mulder finally confronted the root of his addiction and destructive behavior.

"I've always been afraid, Scully," he confessed, his voice trembling. " Dana , we’ve both lost so much. I'm terrified of losing you."

Scully’s heart clenched as she realized she couldn’t promise that she’d always be there. She reached out and gently touched Mulder's hand. "I understand your fear, Mulder, but we need to face this together."

Mulder nodded, tears glistening in his eyes. "I don't want to lose myself. I want to be there for you in every way possible."

Scully smiled, her voice filled with warmth. "Mulder, you've already been there for me. You’ve risked your life for me. Through all the X-Files, the unimaginable cases, and now, in my battle against cancer. You don’t owe me anything."

Fools," said I, "You do not know

Silence like a cancer grows

Hear my words that I might teach you

Take my arms that I might reach you."

But my words, like silent raindrops, fell

And echoed in the wells of silence

As Mulder continued his therapy and engaged in healthier coping mechanisms, he started to rebuild his connection with Scully. Letting her in was the first step. Healing would be a long road; they’d need each other to get there. They shared quiet moments of vulnerability, expressing their unspoken love and longing. It was a bittersweet dance of emotions, knowing that time was precious and that the future remained uncertain.

And the people bowed and prayed

To the neon god they made

And the sign flashed out its warning

In the words that it was forming

And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls

And whispered in the sound of silence"

As they faced each day, something shifted within Mulder. He began to see that his self-destructive behavior only added to Scully's burden and pain. He couldn't bear the thought of his actions causing her any more anguish.

One evening, after a particularly challenging day, Mulder sat by Scully's bedside. Her weakened form lay before him, her face still etched with determination. "Scully, I'm so sorry for everything I put you through," he whispered, his voice filled with remorse.

Scully turned her gaze towards him, her eyes glassy with unshed tears. "Mulder, I've always believed in you, in us."

Tears welled up in Mulder's eyes as he took Scully's hand in his. "I can’t lose you, Scully."

Scully's voice was filled with strength as she responded, "We're fighting this battle together, Mulder. And I'm not going anywhere. I can beat this. We’ll find a way."

Moved by Scully's unwavering faith in him, Mulder began to find the strength to confront his demons. He started to open up about his guilt, grief, and the unspoken feelings that had burdened him for far too long and scully listened, offering understanding and empathy, allowing him to release the weight of his emotions.

"Mulder, I need you to believe in yourself. I believe in you," Scully whispered, her voice barely above a whisper but filled with love.

Mulder's path to recovery was far from over. There were moments when the weight of guilt and grief threatened to pull him under once again. But Scully remained steadfast, offering a guiding light when the darkness threatened to consume him.

They found comfort in their shared moments of tenderness and vulnerability, cherishing the love that had always been there, waiting to be acknowledged.

As Scully's cancer battle continued, their bond grew stronger, galvanized by so much more than pain or suffering. Mulder became a pillar of strength, showing his unspoken feelings in every action, every word. Their connection transcended words as they navigated the challenges together, knowing that somehow they would find a way to defeat this invisible enemy.

One that they no longer had to fight alone, in silence.
