Work Text:
Maggie trudged through the dense woods, her frustration evident in the set of her jaw and the furrow of her brow. The weight of leadership bore down on her shoulders, and every step seemed to echo the mounting pressure she felt. The distant rustling and unusual sounds had piqued her curiosity, or perhaps it was just another challenge she couldn't ignore.
As she pushed through the foliage, the scenery shifted, revealing a clearing near the river. Her annoyance spiked when she spotted Negan, of all people, casually bathing in the river. Shirtless, his chest bared, he seemed completely unfazed by her presence.
The sight intensified Maggie's irritation. She crossed her arms over her tank top-clad chest, lips pressed into a thin line.
“_ Negan, what the hell are you doing here ?”; She demanded, her tone cutting through the ambient sounds of nature. Negan, with his trademark grin, responded.
“_ Just enjoying the scenery, sweetheart. What's it to ya ?”; Rolling her eyes, Maggie realized she needed to wash some of the scavenged food in the river.
“_ Well, you can enjoy it with clothes on. I need to use this spot.”; Negan laughed, a low and sassy chuckle.
“_ I was here first, darlin'. You're the one interrupting.”
As Maggie begrudgingly started to wash the food, she couldn't help but glance at Negan's tattoos and scars. Her irritation wavered for a moment as her focus shifted, a mix of curiosity and distraction.
“_ You're impossible.”; She muttered, attempting to conceal her momentary lapse in concentration. Negan, noticing her distraction, teased.
“_ Can't resist the view, huh ? Can't blame you, Maggie.”; Annoyed and flustered, Maggie shot back.
“_ Keep dreaming, Negan. Just put on a damn shirt.”; Negan, with that infuriating smirk, lifted his gaze to meet hers.
“_ Can’t a man enjoy the perks of the great outdoors, Maggie ?”; Her eyes narrowed, Maggie shot back.
“_ This isn't a vacation spot, Negan. We have work to do. Real problems to solve.”; He chuckled, the sound echoing off the trees.
“_ Work, problems, and all that serious crap can wait, can't it ? You need to unwind, sweetheart.”; The nerve of him grated on her nerves even more.
“_ I don't have time for your games, Negan.”; Maggie retorted, but her eyes involuntarily flickered down to his chest for a moment before she regained focus.
Negan, sensing her flustered state, teased.
“_ Like what you see, though ? It's all yours for the taking.”; An exasperated sigh escaped her lips as she shook her head.
“_ You're insufferable.”; She muttered, turning her attention to the task at hand – washing the scavenged food. Despite her annoyance, the distracting image of Negan lingered in her mind, making the weight of leadership feel even more burdensome.
But as Maggie begrudgingly continued washing the food, Negan couldn't resist needling her further.
“_ You know, Maggie, there's room for two in here. Could use a hand scrubbing my back.”; He quipped, his smirk widening.
Her frustration reached its peak, and she shot him a venomous glare.
“_ You're unbelievable, Negan. Just shut up and let me finish this.”; Negan chuckled, the sound grating on her nerves.
“_ You're the boss, Maggie. Whatever you say, but I gotta warn you, I'm not a fan of cold water.”; Her patience waning, Maggie retorted.
“_ I don't care about your preferences, Negan. Just stay out of my way.”; Undeterred, Negan continued.
“_ Aw, come on, Maggie. Loosen up a bit. We could use some fun around here. Especially you.”; Unable to contain her frustration any longer, Maggie snapped at him, her death stare meeting his brown eyes.
“_ Fun ? This is not the time or place for your idea of fun, Negan. Just be quiet !”
As she tried to storm toward him, mad and determined to snarl in his face, her foot caught on a slippery rock near the riverbank, and she tumbled forward with an undignified yelp. The splash as she hit the water was accompanied by an awkward silence as she came back to the surface, her hair falling over her face, drenched from head to toes.
Negan, managing to suppress a laugh, approached the water's edge.
“_ Well, well, look who decided to take a dip. Didn't know you were into skinny dipping, Maggie. Could've joined me without all these theatrics.”
Maggie, now soaked and seething, shot him a death glare.
“_ This is not funny, Negan.”; He raised an eyebrow, feigning innocence.
“_ I beg to differ Mags. You wanted my attention; you could've just asked ya know ?”; Her frustration transformed into an exasperated sigh.
“_ You're impossible.”; She muttered, attempting to regain her composure while Negan continued to wear that infuriating smirk.
Maggie, drenched and determined to make Negan pay for his incessant teasing, barely emerged from the water with a steely resolve. Her wet clothes clung to her frame as she narrowed her eyes at Negan, who stood smirking on dry land, seemingly unfazed by her misfortune.
Without a word, Maggie closed the distance between them, her steps deliberate. Suddenly, she lunged at Negan, wrapping her arms around his waist with surprising strength. Caught off guard, Negan let out a surprised yelp as they both toppled backward, splashing into the river.
Water sprayed around them as Maggie and Negan surfaced, both sputtering and dripping. For a moment, a stunned silence settled over the scene.
Negan, wiping water from his face, broke into laughter.
“_ Well, damn, Maggie ! Didn't see that one coming. Revenge is a dish best served wet, huh ?”; Maggie couldn't help but chuckle at the unexpected turn of events despite trying to keep her frown on.
“_ Consider us even, Negan. No more teasing.”; Negan raised an eyebrow, a mischievous glint in his eye.
“_ Fair enough, Maggie. But you've got to admit, it was worth it though.”
As they both laughed in the river, the tension between them seemed to dissipate, if only for a moment. The absurdity of the situation brought an unexpected camaraderie, and Maggie found herself, against all odds, sharing a genuine moment of amusement with Negan. The weight of leadership momentarily lifted as the two adversaries found common ground in the most unconventional way.
Negan extended a hand towards Maggie, a smirk still playing on his lips.
“_ Come on, Maggie. Let me help you out of the water like a gentleman before you tear my head off.”
She accepted his hand, but as he started to pull her up, she attempted to playfully yank him back into the river. However, Negan was quicker than she anticipated. With a swift move, he anticipated her intention and, instead of falling, he pulled her toward him. Both ended up back in the water with a splash.
Negan surfaced, still grinning.
“_ Nice try, Maggie. But I think we've established that you can't outsmart me already, darling.”; Maggie groaned, water dripping from her hair.
“_ This isn't over, Negan. You're not as clever as you think.”; He chuckled, his charm unyielding.
“_ We'll see about that, Maggie.”; As Maggie complained and half-heartedly tried to swim away, she realized she was pressed against Negan's chest, her face dangerously close to his. A sudden warmth rushed to her cheeks, and she stammered.
“_ Get off me, Negan. Get off !!”; He, however, remained unfazed, his gaze locked onto hers.
“_ You're blushing, Maggie.”; He remarked with a sly grin. “ Didn't know I had that effect on you.”
Maggie huffed, attempting to push away from him, but the water made her movements sluggish.
“_ Don't get any ideas, Negan. This changes nothing. The only effect you have on me is making me nauseous.”
Negan, still holding Maggie in the water, chuckled at her attempted defiance.
"_ Nauseous, huh ? Must be all the excitement, sweetheart.”; He remarked, the sly grin not leaving his face. “ Or maybe it's just the shock of realizing you enjoy my company more than you'd like to admit.”
Maggie scowled, her frustration evident.
“_ You wish, Negan. I'd rather swim with a horde of zombies than spend a second more with you.”; He raised an eyebrow, feigning offense.
“_ Ouch, Maggie. Zombies ? That's harsh. I thought we were bonding over our little water adventure here.”; Maggie, undeterred, continued to squirm in his grasp, groaning against the current of the river.
“_ There's no bonding, Negan. This is pure torture.”; Negan leaned in, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
“_ Oh, come on, Maggie. I can practically feel the camaraderie blossoming between us.”; Maggie shot him a withering glare.
“_ The only thing blossoming is my desire to drown you.”; Negan laughed, enjoying the banter.
“_ You're a tough crowd, Maggie. But I've dealt with worse. This hunter's got thick skin.”; Maggie, still trapped in his hold, rolled her eyes.
“_ Thick skin, empty head. What's the difference, Negan ?”; He grinned.
“_ Touché. But I've got to say, your attempts at insults are almost as entertaining as this unexpected swim.”
As Maggie rolled her eyes and continued to protest, the atmosphere around them seemed to shift. The playful splashing escalated into a full-fledged water fight between Maggie and Negan. Laughter echoed through the riverbank as they exchanged playful attacks, each trying to outdo the other. Water splashed around, creating a lighthearted chaos.
The water fight intensified between Maggie and Negan, their laughter and banter echoing through the riverbank. Sunlight danced on the ripples of the water, creating a surprisingly carefree atmosphere for two individuals who couldn't stand each other.
Maggie, her wet hair clinging to her face, retaliated with a splash that sent droplets cascading in every direction.
“_ You really think you can outsmart me, Negan ?”; She taunted, a mischievous glint in her eyes. Negan, slicking back his wet hair with a dramatic flair, shot back.
“_ Sweetheart, outsmarting you is like shooting fish in a barrel. Too easy.”; Their banter continued as they circled each other in the water. Maggie feigned a look of mock surprise.
“_ Oh, Negan, I didn't know fish shooting was in your skill set. Must be all those years spent in the wilderness.”; He smirked, preparing his next move.
“_ You'd be surprised, Maggie. I'm a man of many talents. Fish shooting, zombie wrangling, and apparently, water warfare.”; With a swift move, Maggie ducked beneath the water, reemerging behind Negan.
“_ You'll need more than talent to catch me,though !”; She declared, launching another splash attack. Negan, dodging her splash with a dramatic spin, retorted.
“_ Well, Maggie, catching you might be a challenge, but it's nothing compared to dealing with your sharp tongue.”
In the midst of their antics, Maggie gave Negan a particularly strong push, sending him underwater. Expecting him to resurface moments later, she waited with a mischievous grin. However, seconds turned into a minute, and panic crept into her expression.
She frantically scanned the water's surface for any sign of him, fearing the worst.
But just as her concern deepened, Negan emerged from the water, grinning like the Cheshire Cat.
“_ Gotcha !”; He exclaimed, clearly reveling in his dramatic disappearance. Maggie, her relief palpable, couldn't suppress the surge of emotions.
“_ You idiot ! You scared me half to death !”; She moved towards him, a mix of worry and frustration in her eyes. Negan, seemingly oblivious to the impact of his little prank, raised an eyebrow.
“_ What's the matter, Maggie ? It was just a bit of fun.”; She couldn't hold back her irritation.
“_ Fun ? I thought something happened to you, you moron !”; His expression softened as he realized the effect of his actions.
“_ Hey, I'm fine. No harm done. I promise I’m alright.”; She rolled her eyes but, in a surprising turn, pulled him into a tight hug, a frown painted on her face.
“_ You're still an idiot.”; She mumbled, her voice slightly choked with emotion. Negan, taken aback by the unexpected hug, awkwardly patted her back.
“_ Well, damn, Maggie. Didn't know you cared that much.”; She pulled away, a hint of a smile playing on her lips.
“_ Don't get used to it. I just didn't want to deal with the paperwork for losing you in a stupid river.”; Negan chuckled, giving her a playful nudge.
“_ Fair enough, boss lady. Let's just get back to our regularly scheduled water fight, huh ?”
But as Maggie pulled away from the hug, Negan couldn't help but notice the rare vulnerability in her expression. His usual smirk softened, and he playfully teased.
“_ Wait Maggie, you were worried about me ? Like genuinely ? Didn't know you cared that much. Should I be flattered or concerned ?”; Rolling her eyes, Maggie gave him a light shove.
“_ Don't flatter yourself, Negan. I just didn't want to deal with the hassle of explaining your disappearance to everyone. I don’t care about you…”; Negan chuckled, the warmth in his eyes contrasting with his usual bravado.
“_ Fair enough, boss lady. But next time you decide to hug me, can we do it without the threat of paperwork looming over us or trying to drown me into a river ?”
Maggie scoffed, trying to maintain her tough exterior.
“_ Don't push your luck, Negan. This doesn't mean anything.”; He raised an eyebrow, the teasing glint in his eyes undeterred.
“_ Oh, I think it means you secretly enjoy my company, Maggie. Admit it, I'm growing on you.”
Her response was a playful eye-roll, but a hint of a smile betrayed her facade. As they resumed their water fight, there lingered an unspoken acknowledgment that, despite the odds, they had found an unexpected connection in the midst of their rivalry and banter. The river became a backdrop for a moment of camaraderie, a temporary truce in their ongoing dance of wit and sarcasm.
