Work Text:

The light of dawn shines soft through the sheer drapes Gale bought at the start of Star’s new life with the ring that lets him walk in the sun. It was a fine dawn, too, bright and calm and right. It bathes their bed in warmth, and he basks in it, stretched out like a cat. Next to him, Gale still sleeps, sound as a babe. Star smiles at him, stares at the way the light hits him.

Sun rays cut through a glass cup placed near the bed, on the small wood stool they use to hold their things. The light breaks as it moves through the glass and sends a streaked spray up the wall that glows with all the hues that light can be. The streaks fall on the bed, too, and glint as gold strands in Gale’s splayed hair. Star sighs and leans to kiss Gale’s cheek, cool lips on warm skin.

Gale’s eyes blink open and the spray lights those too, casts gilt flecks into the warm brown.

“Star,” Gale breathes. His voice is rough with sleep.

“Gale,” he says back, light and soft. Gale smiles.

A hand moves up to cup his neck, thumb near where a pulse would be if his heart still beat. In lieu, his veins run still, cold and dead. Gale does not care; he tells him all the time when Star feels rough and needs to ask. Gale will tell him that no, there is no beat that needs to be had for a heart to feel full and strong. Star loves him all the more for it.

Gale pulls him down for a kiss that tastes like sleep. It should have been foul, should have put him off, but Star can’t help but push close and sigh into Gale’s mouth. Gale could never put him off.

“How long have you been up?” Gale asks.

Star thinks. “Hours?”

“Hm,” Gale hums, “and how have you filled the time?”

He had read, of course. A stack of books sat on both their sides of the bed, thick tomes full of tales from far away lands. But Star sees a chance to tease. So he does.

“Oh, you know, the same old thing,” Star lilts, tone light but cut with sharp sense of wit. “I just sat and watched you, of course.”

Gale peaks a brow. “Did you, now? For…hours?”

Star rolls his eyes. “Of course not, Gale.”

“Oh I don’t know,” Gale laughs. “Could have fooled me. Don’t beasts of the night do that sort of thing? Stalk young men in the dark, back to their homes where they can feed from them?”

Star knows it’s a joke. They are like that, now. Jokes flow back and forth and no one is hurt. So Star smirks at Gale’s tone.

“Is that what you want?” he purrs, “For me to stand there all night and watch you like one of those beasts?” He brings a thigh up to press at Gale’s hip. He hears the hitch of breath and knows the ploy works.

Gale still has his wits even through the haze of dawn. He tilts his head in thought.

“You could try,” Gale says, though the last word turns to a gasp as Star brings a hand to his crotch to press down on the hard length he finds there. It is the start of a new day, to be fair. Gale wakes like this most days. It earns him a smirk.

“Could I, now?” Star hums with a raised brow. Gale’s next words are cut off by Star’s mouth.

Gale’s lips are soft and warm. A bit dry from sleep, and his breath still reeks, but that’s fine. Gale must know this, for he pulls back just a bit to cast a spell on his mouth that turns his taste to sweet mint. He did not need to do such a thing, but Star loves him for the thought he puts into his love’s care at all turns.

There was heat at first, from the push and pull of wit, but the love of that spell turns Star’s next kiss soft. He moans at Gale’s press of tongue and tilts his head to get more, slow and deep and wet.

“Make love to me?” he sighs. Gale taps their brows to each other and nods.

It takes no time at all to flip and strip off the night’s sleep clothes. What once would have been a dark room back when he did not have his ring is now bright with the dawn and Star roves his gaze over Gale’s form, soft here and hard there and toned bright with the split hues of the sun’s light. Gale knows, he knows why Star looks, so he gives him time to, sits up on his heels and lets his love drink in the sight of him.

“I would paint you if I could,” Star says, voice low, “You would be my muse. No man could want for one more fit for the role.”

Gale huffs at the praise and Star can see the start of a blush creep up from his chest. Gale runs his hands down pale skin and drops his eyes to stare at their path. He grips at Star’s hips and casts a new spell that hits Star’s core with a warm, wet wave. Star feels his hole drip and Gale wastes no time, spreads Star wide with his hands to see his work.

“How do you want me, love?” Gale asks. His eyes have not left Star’s ass and it makes him want to squirm, to preen, to close his legs or spread more, he is not sure.

He thinks. “Your hands first.”

He does not need them. Gale’s spell did that work as well, stretched him just as well as it wet him. But he likes when the heat builds, to feel as Gale swirls around his hole and takes his time.

One goes in, then two. Gale sets a slow pace and meets Star’s gaze, leans down to press a kiss against his neck. Star sighs at the press of his hands and melts into the bed, eyes half closed. When a third goes in with ease he knows they can move on.

“Want you,” he moans into Gale’s ear.

Gale nods and groans back. “Want you too.”

The first press is slow but Gale soon builds a quick pace with sharp snaps of his hips. Star grips at his arms and wraps his heels to the small of Gale’s back. Gale’s hair is loose and falls in soft waves to brush Star’s face, a ring of brown still cut through with those bright dawn rays. He breathes hard, breath hot on Star’s face, and the hair moves with him, a tease of a touch on pale skin. Some drapes down his chest and with every thrust rubs against his pecs.

“Gale,” Star moans, not sure what else to say, too fraught with bliss to think. Gale moans his own name back at him and Star grins, wide and wild, and roves his eyes down flushed skin that moves in waves to pull sweet moans from both their mouths.

There is no rush, but Star feels his peak near. How could he not, when the man he loves knows just how to take him just so, how to press in and swirl and snap so well that all Star can do is ride it out and let his peak take him in turn. He tells Gale this, moans his need to come and Gale tells him to.

Gale thrusts once, twice. On the third Star peaks and bursts up to his chest, cries out his love’s name and bears down on him to wring out the same from Gale. He feels the warm rush of Gale’s spend deep in his core and cards his hands through grey and brown strands so he can see Gale’s face in full as he comes for him. Just for him.

They stay for a while like that and Star lets his hands and legs fall to the bed. Gale looks down at him with a soft smile, then pulls out and lays down back where he was when he woke. One last spell cleans the mess they made. Star lets a hand rest on Gale’s chest and looks as the dawn rays warm his own skin with split hues. Gale hums a soft sort of noise and Star looks up to see his eyes fall on the hand.

“I am so glad we found you that ring,” he sighs. “I want for naught now, I think, now that you can be in the sun with me.”

Star leans his head next to his hand and nods. “I think…I think so too, Gale.” He means it. To be here with his love is a bliss he would have scoffed at, once. But this is real, and it will be real for as long as he wants. Which is, he thinks, for as long as he can have it. He wants for naught as well.

Gale turns his head to press a kiss to white curls. “I love you, my Star.”

They stay like that for a while more, warmed by the rays of the sun.

Notes:

I really enjoyed doing the monosyllabic challenge! I tried my best to make things flow well and not sounds too stilted. I read through this about six thousand times to make sure I hadn't broken the monosyllabic rule but if you catch anything let me know!
