Chapter Text
You wake up in the middle of nowhere.
You don't remember who you were or what you were doing but you have no time to wonder about it, because the same voice that woke you up asks you to create a vessel. And it's only then you realise - you don't have a body. No head, no torso, no legs. There's only a faint, red glow around you and, squinting your nonexistent eyes, you can barely see a faint reflection of yourself in the void.
Are you… a heart?
The voice asks you to name your vessel. Naturally, you name your new body after yourself. Then it asks for your name and you feel like an idiot.
But just as you were about to enter your new body, you see nothing. A second voice tells you your vessel has been discarded, and next thing you know, you open your eyes as
a teenager named Kris. You take a look at the mirror. So, that's who you are now. But what are you supposed to do?
…go to school, apparently. Your new mother, whose name you somehow know is Toriel, hugs you and waves you goodbye.
Even more weirdly, you know your teacher's name too. It's Alphys.
Your role as Kris didn't come with the knowledge or memories to actually make you act the part, yet like with Toriel- you just know her name. As she speaks, you can't help but imagine her with a lab coat.
She makes you go look for chalk with Susie, the class bully. Not even a minute later, you predictably get shoved into a locker. Sooner this is done, the better.
But you have to do the group project for her, too… Ugh.
The supply closet is weird, though. Why is it so big and dark?
You fall for what feels like hours. When you wake up, your skin is blue, you’re wearing armor and you have absolutely no idea where you are. What kind of supply closet was this?
You meet back with Susie but before you figure out where the hell you are- someone attacks you from above.
So you run, and run, until you reach an empty castle town.
A hooded figure welcomes you, and you listen intently to his tale because you want to learn everything you can about your situation. And boy is it a lot of information. But the fact you’re a hero? That’s so cool!
But you don’t have time to process it as you’re attacked again by the one from before… which turns out to be a silly kid named Lancer. Your heart form pops up from your body, you have no idea what you’re doing, so while Susie is bashing his head in with her axe you fight him, dodge his bullets, complimenting his luscious hair- until he leaves for dinner.
The hooded figure unhoods himself and turns out to be a fluffy goat boy named Ralsei, and he kindly explains everything he can think of to you. He tells you how battles work and… apparently your heart form is a soul..? Like, a capital S SOUL? What happened for you to lose your body? Did you die? Did you get kicked out of your body and lost your way back?
You want to ask him to elaborate, you really do, but the words won’t come out of your mouth.
It’s hard to explain, but- you can only talk when this box pops up in front of you with potential ways to answer. You don’t get to choose when it appears or what it lets you say, and you can’t talk when that box doesn’t pop up. It’s like your mouth is sealed shut, and it pisses you off. You have so many questions, and no way to even ask them.
Still, you enjoy Ralsei’s company. He’s nice, helpful and you have fun sparing enemies with you.
You can’t say the same about Susie, who is practically the opposite to the point you and Ralsei have to warn enemies about her. Eventually it comes to a breaking point and she leaves the Fun Gang (that’s your team’s name) to join Lancer. Ironically, she ends up becoming friends with him.
You like them more like this. Their shenanigans are really funny. They make you design a machine to trash your own ass, but you decide to prank them back by making a duck.
Susie says it sucks ass, but you'd argue it’s your magnum opus. They even make it… only to blow it up in front of you. You’re not even mad.
You get into a lighthearted fight and since you win, Susie and Lancer join the Fun Gang.
But you don’t even have time to enjoy their company before Lancer runs away, upset by the idea of you fighting his dad, runs away and you get captured and thrown into jail.
Susie manages to break out and you watch her try to escape, but then she finds Lancer and feels betrayed by him admitting he wanted to keep them trapped in prison, and snaps.
You can’t stop her from attacking him over and over, no matter what- you even try to run into Lancer’s bullets but he moves them away from you, you feels helpless and you watch in horror as Susie is about to deal the finishing blow-
-and misses. She can’t bear to kill him and Lancer admits he doesn’t want you and his dad killing each other. They make up and decide to try talking the King down, and you breathe a sigh of relief before you returning to your body with Ralsei. Apparently he was telling you something..? You feel bad for him talking to no one.
You were about to go face the King, but then you find out a secret floor with a jester trapped in jail (although he insists everyone else is locked up but him) and, well. You just have to see what that’s about, don’t you?
So you scour all of Card Kingdom to find the pieces of the key for his jail, and you then fix it up and go visit the clown. What follows is pure chaos as you, Susie and Ralsei fight for your lives against him. You should have been scared, but… it was so much fun.
Jevil congratulates you and turns into a tail for you to wear, and you find a strange piece of glass that makes you see toys on the floor when you look through it. What the heck was that about?
You get back on track and on your way to face Lancer’s dad you find Rouxls Kaard blocking your path. He’s as incompetent as he is hilarious.
The King, though… is a whole other story.
He threatens to drop Lancer off a cliff if you don’t submit, and as Lancer breaks free runs away, King’s attack are vicious. But not as much as the venom in his every word he spits at you.
Then he surrenders and Ralsei heals him, and you all realize that was a mistake moments after, as you lay on the floor from King’s sneak attack.
As he attacks Susie, your body moves on its own to shield her, but that only delays the inevitable…
…Luckily enough for Lancer and everyone else to save the day and throw the (former) king into jail. You wave goodbye until you and Susie decide to stay a little longer to talk to everyone and then you leave.
You’re back in an unused classroom with Susie, everything back to normal. You recognize the toys and cards all over the floor.
Susie is much kinder to you now, and says goodbye with a promise to go back to the Dark World tomorrow. You can’t wait.
You then walk all around town before going back home, talking to everyone and checking everything you can. You’re invested now, and you want to learn everything you can about this world you’ve already grown to care for.
And then you see him. Sans.
If you knew Toriel and Alphys’ names for no reason, with Sans you feel a strong sense of deja vu. So when you get the option to tell him “Great to see you again”, you don’t hesitate for a moment.
He winks at you and says he's never met you before, but you KNOW that’s not true. Maybe he doesn’t recognize you as Kris, but you know you’ve seen him somewhere before.
…Before you woke up as just a soul. Where did you come from? What was your life before? Did you know Toriel, Alphys, Sans and the others? You can’t help but wonder.
You talk to Noelle and tell her about Susie eating chalk, you rest at the lake and end up talking to a weird onion thing, you do everything you can possibly think of in Hometown before heading back home and going to bed after a long, eventful day.
You never thought much about your new role. You just kind of accepted it. You’re Kris now, better get used to it.
It’s when you fall from your bed, you get torn out from what you thought was your body and locked into a cage you realize just how wrong you were.
Kris was an actual person, they were there all along and, judging by the violent way they tore you out and the grin they shoot toward you as they draw a knife, they were not happy with your barging into their life uninvited.
You wish you could say sorry to them.
