Charlie doesn’t register what his face is doing until Nick finally turns and pales at the sight of him.
“Oh.” Nick swallows, his Adam’s apple bobbing in his wrinkled throat. His kind eyes are full of anguish, far more serious than Charlie has ever seen them. When he talks again, his voice is steady, but infinitely soft. “It’s time, isn’t it? Our last bit of extra-time.”
Charlie’s chin trembles as he nods, a gut-wrenching sob finally escaping the lips he tried to pinch. As if his heart’s scream of agony could be contained by sheer willpower.
