The Favorite At All Costs

Summary:

A poem describing how Woody’s focus changed from being the leader to being relevant to losing everything in the course of staying focused on being on top, but what does it mean when you sacrifice your pride for the sake of selfishness and how it affects those around you.

Work Text:

In the quiet of a child's room,
Woody stands proud,
a cowboy stitched with memories,
the favorite, the first in line,
the keeper of dreams,
brimming with laughter and love,
all wrapped in Andy's embrace.

Yet in shadowed corners,
a blaster whirs,
Buzz Lightyear arrives,
a shining, bold newcomer,
with wings that flutter,
and a voice like the stars,
casting doubt in Woody's heart.

His heart, once simple,
now split like the horizon
between day and night,
pride tinged with a hint of green,
a subtle twist of envy,
as he watches Andy’s gaze
shift like clouds,
drifting towards the unknown.

"To infinity and beyond," Buzz proclaims,
each word a challenge,
like a rocket igniting
Woody’s second thoughts.
Could the love,
the laughter once his alone,
be shared, divided,
between the old and the new?

Yet, in the middle of the battle,
one truth remains —
a testament of strings and care,
this cowboy knows deep down
that no matter the shiny allure,

He will be the favorite even if it means he has to do whatever it takes after all he is still the favorite toy and no one is taking it away from him, however he wasn’t above doing I whatever it took he knew what happened to the toys who rotted in the attic and he knew the feeling of being trapped with no one just your own thoughts for decades,

He would never let it happen, he would be the favorite even if it meant self preservation took precedence over the others, leadership was the last thing, nice guys always finished last.

Slinky watched, Woody had knocked him off the bed, the look of shock he had, the way he acted, ti was if he was losing himself to his worst impulses, he no longer smiled, he would get more angry and yell at any whoever was in the way, that was usually Buzz but sometimes it was him or Rex,

Rex thought how could someone who used to defend him and was so caring could become so cold hearted and apathetic to him and the others,

Bo looked with contempt at him but she knew that he was hurting, it was time like these that made her furstated, he couldn’t see the impact of his actions on others but every time she tried, he denied and pushed her and everyone else away.

For Hamm, it was unusually hard to believe, while he often got a little bit of a laugh out of poking fun at Woody with Potato Head, now it felt like walking on eggshells, the last time he tried, the cold stare made him feel as if he was looking at a stranger and not a friend.

Mr. Potato Head saw it differently, the fact was Woody was fine as long as everyone else followed his lead but whenever Andy or any other toy was loved by him, he would be upset or angry at said toy, he had once been in said situation, thus when he saw the space man go out the window, he knew he needed to call him out or else others would follow.

Woody looked down as Buzz fell as the realization dawned on him, he had been so focused on his own self interest, he had become someone no one could recognize and was now on the judging end of the friends he once called his allies now that of his judge and jury.
