The Spook Patrol Explores Gotham's Most Haunted House

Summary:

Rumours have been flying about the Spook Patrol's latest video. It's been months since their last upload and their socials have been quiet. No one knows what its going to be about. They just dropped a teaser.

Or

Jason and Kon are the face of the Spook Patrol, Gotham's premier ghost hunting team. Today they're going into a house near and dear to Jason's heart. No one could have predicted what they'd find.

Notes:

All the ghost hunting lore and worldbuilding comes from Jordan L Hawk's Spirits Trilogy and Outfoxing the Paranormal. Go check them out if you want more and better ghost stories.

The fic is complete and will be posted more or less weekly. I still haven't figure out the chapter breaks but I can cheat with this one.

Much thanks to my betas for helping this become better. All remaining mistakes and infelicities are mine.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: The Teaser

Chapter Text

The thumbnail of the video is just a date over a picture of a standard Gotham brownstone. The title, "teaser for our next video" doesn't tell you anything else. You click on it, and the page loads. The video begins to play.

The thumbnail fades out to the faces of Jason Todd and Kon Kent. They're leaning on each other, barely able to stand. Blood is smeared across Jason's face. Kon looks like he's developing a black eye. Neither of them are focused on the camera. The brownstone is out of focus in the background. It's fully lit but the gold dark of Gotham after sunset pushes in on it.

"I'm Jason." His voice is hoarse.

"I'm Kon." His voice is little more than a croak.

A siren goes off in the background, and both men jump. The chop of a helicopter overhead is faintly audible. The lights of a car flash over them.

"We just finished filming the greatest video ever," Jason says.

"It's going to blow your minds," Kon adds.

"Tune in... sometime next week?" Jason doesn't sound like his usual confident self.

"We'll get this up as soon as possible," Kon promises.

The red and blue lights of an ambulance wash out the gold of the streetlights. Jason and Kon look up and seem to forget that the camera's on them for a moment. Someone shouts indistinctly. Jason blinks and looks back at the camera.

"So, yeah, catch the video when we put it up, and see how we changed our lives."
