Work Text:
Jack fiddled with the frayed edges of his costume, tugging at the faux burned fabric nervously. “Are you ready to go?” Jack asked as he heard Waylon mess with something in the bathroom. When Waylon came out, Jack paused at the sight of Waylon– he was… dressed up as himself? That was the only way Jack could describe it– it looked like Waylon's everyday clothes. Just without his usual white/grey t-shirt.
“Um, are you going as Killer Croc?” Jack tried to guess, “Killer Croc going as Killer Croc?”
“Heh, basically,” Waylon chuckled as he snapped his tight gray shorts, “It's an old outfit, from my wrestling days. I thought it would be something to bring out for the party.”
“You're wrestling days??” Jack's eyes widened as he took in Waylon's clothes, “I didn't know you wrestled, were you any good?”
“Too good,” Waylon reluctantly admitted, “Too violent, really, but it worked until it didn't– I knew my own strength, sure, but I didn't know how to control my anger,” he shrugged as he wrung his hands together.
“Are you comfortable wearing that, then?” Jack asked with concern, “I'm sure I have an outfit of mine from the previous year.”
“...What is it?” Waylon asked as he glanced down at Jack's outfit, his frown twitching into a smile. “Are you going as a Ghost Ghostbuster?” Waylon asked as Jack started to look through his closet frantically– they were running late for the party already, he didn't want to be too late and miss it entirely.
“Well, I've been dressing up as a Ghostbuster since college– and, well, it's still a part of what I do, and what I did, but I wanted to show Danny that I support him,” Jack shrugged as he set a few costumes aside (huh, he could probably make an easy Herbert West costume out of his wardrobe– wait is that is old Frank-N-Furter costume from college? Waylon probably wouldn't wear that) for Waylon to look at.
“Is this… uh, who is this again?” Waylon asked as he picked up a robe.
“Obi-Wan Kenobi! I forgot I had that, I wore that after Danny and Jazz watched Star Wars for the first time,” Jack hummed, “Jazz wanted to be Leia so she dragged Danny into being Luke, even if he really wanted to be Boba Fett.”
“I'm guessing Maddie was dressed as Padmé?” Waylon asked, “She'd look good in that yellow dress.”
“I don't think those movies were out yet,” Jack hummed before narrowing his eyes, “I think she went as C-3PO, I remember her complaining that she regretted not picking R2D2,” he chuckled as he picked out a few other things. “We did dress up as Anakin and Padmé after the movies came out, she wore the white two piece outfit since that was all she could get in time, but I know she absolutely loves that black corset dress.”
“Huh, maybe Talia would dress up as Anakin,” Waylon mused at the thought.
“Knowing Talia, she'd probably dress similarly and say she's Sabé,” Jack pointed out with an amused grin.
“She would,” Waylon agreed as he looked through the pile of clothes curiously. “Huh, maybe this could work?” Waylon asked as he picked up something– Jack's old Jason Vorhees mask (Jack loves slashers and he probably went to the cinema to rewatch it a concerning amount when it came out.)
“It could! I should have a ragged dark shirt somewhere around here– it got messed up when I was messing with ecto-energy– here's a jacket, and a-ha! Some trousers,” Jack beamed up at Waylon as he held the outfit out for him. “Will this work?” Jack asked, tilting his head slightly as he looked up at Waylon.
“It will, thanks sweetie,” Waylon leaned down and pressed a kiss to Jack's cheek before slipping into the bathroom.
Jack couldn't help but fluster at the sudden kiss, feeling the warmth within him spread throughout his body that made him feel blissfully safe.
When Waylon slipped out of the bathroom again, this time fully dressed, Jack couldn't help but study his partner. The broad shoulders and the way his tail thumped against the ground (Jack hadn't thought there was any scissors in the bathroom, but there had to be if Waylon was able to cut a tail-hole in the trousers), well– Jack couldn't help but press a kiss to Waylon's exposed neck (kissing a plastic mask didn't really make sense to him, it'd just feel like kissing plastic, so.)
“Are you ready to go?” Jack asked as he leaned back as Waylon's tail thumped against the ground.
“As ready as I'll ever be,” Waylon shrugged as he stared Jack down through the awkward-fitting hockey mask.
“Alrighty!” Jack beamed and jumped in place before shooting off, trying to gather all of their last minute things.
When they arrived at Danny's place (Danny's boyfriend's place– apparently they met in the Gotham Convention Centre one of the times Jack and Maddie dragged the young boy to one of the many, many science conventions they've been to), Jack couldn't help but nervously play with his sleeves.
However, he knew his costume was worth it when Danny opened the door, took in his costume and looked at him with teary eyes.
“Happy Halloween!” Jack cheered as he held out a slightly rained on pot pie.
“Hey, come in!” Danny opened the door further with a smile on his face, “Ghost Ghostbuster and Jason Vorhees?” Danny guessed as he took the pot pie from Jack.
“Yep! And you're… the Gray Ghost! Right?” Jack asked as the door was closed behind them.
“Hah! Yep, me and JJ have been rewatching what we could find lately, we decided to dress up as childhood crushes,” Danny shrugged as he placed the pot pie on the counter, “JJ? We have more guests!”
Danny's partner, JJ, has had a cold, calculating air around him anytime Jack's even got a glimpse of him and this time is no exception. JJ studied Jack's outfit for a few moments before nodding, some of his iciness falling away at whatever he saw (he knew he wasn't the best parent, hell, he knows, but he's trying– maybe that's all JJ wanted to see?)
“Come on in, my sister's here and she brought a few friends,” there was a dark, somewhat manic, glint in JJ's eyes before they disappeared.
“There's something off with that kid,” Waylon mumbled to Jack as they walked into the sitting room, where a small crowd was awkwardly mingling with each other as Halloween music played.
“I know, but Danny really likes him,” Jack whispered back before taking in the crowd in front of him, putting a big smile on his face and jumping straight into socialising.
And it turned out that Jack was right, Talia did dress in the same black corset dress as Maddie and claimed she's Sabé.
