Do you ever think about what our lives would’ve been like if, you know, it didn’t happen?
Yeah, sometimes… I was going to go to Howard. Pre-law, with a double major in history and philosophy. And date a bunch of beautiful women. Make first string on the soccer team. Graduate first in my class. And then I was going to go to law school and land an internship in one of the biggest firms in the country.
You did do all those things.
Yeah. But if I’m being honest, not a single one of those things felt… real.

After the rescue, Tai falls out of touch with almost all of the other survivors, as she returns to the straight-and-narrow path she’d long ago set for herself. But she stays in contact with Shauna. Shauna, who doesn’t have the life she planned. Who has, maybe, someone else’s life. Shauna who Tai knows better and deeper and wilder than her husband does, Shauna who is just too BIG for most people, Shauna who makes her feel like all the parts of her that do not fit in the ten-year-plan are still somehow okay.
