Opposite, yet the same.

Summary:

Owen was still salty. Still felt an unending rage towards humanity. But the doctor. The doctor was something else.

What could go wrong with a vampire and a doctor travelling across the country?

Notes:

Hello hello!

I fear this is incredibly self indulgent, all the way from start to finish. But I love Owen and his character and I wanted to try portray his character throughs Legundo’s eyes. I am an Owen main soni don’t know Leg’s character that well so let me know if this is OOC

Enjoy!

Work Text:

Owen was a cat.

That’s what Legundo decided on the train while Owen stared out the window, pupils blown so big the doctor could barely see the whites of his eyes, ears pin straight, a soft purring noise coming from the vampire. At first Legundo thought there might have been a cat on board, but no. It was just Owen, lost in thought. “Enjoying yourself?” He smirked. Owen whipped his head around and the purring stopped, he glared at the doctor.

“I’ve never been on a train before.” He huffed matter-of-factly. Legundo couldn’t help but smile as Owen scratched his claws against the windowframe. Despite Owen agreeing to join Legundo on his travels, as a way to better himself, he was still quite cold and snappy. He had made it quite clear he was doing this for Louis. Legundo didn’t mind, if Owen getting better required him following Legundo around and playing doctor he’d let him.

“I didn’t know Vampires could purr.” He hummed casually, jotting a few notes in his journal. Owen hummed back drearily,

"There's a lot about vampires you don’t know.”

Legundo nodded, expecting that answer before placing his journal back in his travel bag. They both stared out the window for a while, Owen’s purring coming and being stopped swiftly in small bursts. Legundo couldn’t help but smile. He’s embarrassed.

“Where are we going again?” Owen asked with a yawn, running a clawed hand through his hair absentmindedly. Since leaving Oakhurst his hair and eyes had gone back to their rich brown, which Legundo often found quite charming on the vampire.

“The city. Then we’re going to catch another train to some smaller villages that might not have doctors.” The doctor informed the older man, who nodded lazily as he turned back to the window. Owen had informed Legundo that he’d never been outside of Oakhurst before, the poor vamp almost had a breakdown at the train station with all the people and new smells and sights. The actual train ride was much calmer after he managed to coax the man on.

Soon the train came to a stop, its loud whistle blaring causing Owen to flinch. Legundo stood up, soon followed by Owen and the rest of the residents in the train car. Owen kept close to Legundo as they stepped off the train, his ears pointed down and his pupils shrunk into slits as they walked into the bustling crowd. The vampire didn’t say a word as the doctor grabbed his bigger bag from the train’s storage or when they began to leave the station and out into the city.

The city was in full swing, people bustling around and cars rumbling down roads and buildings that were much too tall. Legundo turned to look at Owen, who looked incredibly stressed out by all the noise and how strange of an environment they were in. Legundo knew it would take getting used too- and he had no idea of knowing what Owen was thinking. Owen grumbled slightly, “I thought you said we’d be taking another train.”

Legundo smiled as Owen wrapped his shawl tighter around himself as he stared aggressively at everyone who passed him. “We have one stop we need to make first.” The doctor assured him as he started walking down into the street, Owen right on his heels. Before leaving Legundo had made sure to get the information from Abolish about the shadow organization so he actually had a way of ethically feeding his new vampire companion; he pulled out the slip of paper Abolish had given him as they were leaving Oakhurst, following the directions in hopes of finding the building he was looking for. Owen was getting even more skittish than usual as they dipped down dark alleys and sketchy roads, but they soon made it to the building that had the same symbol as on the paper. “Here we are.”

Owen flicked his ears slightly as they entered the building, still scanning around for any danger. As they entered they were met with a very dark room, barely lit by the lanterns on the wall. There was a desk at the front with a shorter woman sitting behind it, reading a book. She had the tell-tale look of a vampire- Red eyes and white hair that had been dyed a deep red at the tips. Legundo swallowed his nerves and walked up to the counter while Owen growled defensively. The lady perked up, giving the two of them a smile. Her fangs were small but prominent. It made Legundo think every vampire's features were slightly different from one another. Something he’d have to research.

“Hello, sorry to bother you but I was wondering if you’d be able to help me.” Legundo asked as politely as possible while Owen loomed behind him. The lady gave Owen a funny look before turning back to the doctor.

“Of course, do you have a card?” She smiled, opening a big book full of names and numbers. Legundo pulled out the card Abolish gave him and handed it to the lady.

“I don’t have an account set up but a friend of mine who works for you told me this should help me set one up for my friend here.” The doctor nodded. The lady looked at the card for a moment and stamped a small hole in the side of it. “Ah Mr. Veylocke did say a friend would be stopping by.” The lady smiled sweetly. “I’ll just have you fill out this form, I’m assuming this is your charge then?” She asked, gesturing to Owen who prickled at the comment.

Legundo chuckled nervously, “I wouldn’t say charge- but I’m just helping him get set up.” He informed the lady, "He's not particularly fond of people.” The lady just nodded, giving Owen a kind look. He just stared, but his glare has lessened significantly.

“I understand, we get people like that all the time. It's sweet.” She grinned, handing him a clipboard with some forms attached to it and a pen. “Take your time.” She concluded as she gestured to the chairs surrounding the room before returning to her book.

Legundo thanked her and guided Owen to sit down before he joined him. He began reading over the form and nodded at how thorough it was. “Okay I’m just going to put my name as a secondary account holder so I can get your stuff for you without you having to be here.” Legundo hummed as he filled in his and Owens name in their respective sections and ticked the boxes that applied to their species. Owen gave him a strange look before sighing.

“Legs, what is this?” He growled slowly, giving him a suspicious look. Legundo gasped and hit his palm against his head.

“Ah shoot sorry, I forgot to explain.” He sighed, putting the pen down. “This is the organization Abolish works for that helps Vampires.” He clarified, handing Owen the clipboard. “It’s so we can refill your food supply.” Owen nodded, a strange glint in his eyes as he held the clipboard and squinted at the paper.

“You just need to fill in the second page so they know what to leave aside for you.” He coached, handing him the pen. Owen nodded, staring down at the paper again as his ears dropped and his eyes became wide. Legundo tilted his head as Owen read the page, before he sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. “I- I can’t read this.” Owen admitted, his face turned a bright red from embarrassment. Legundo paused, a bit confused.

“But I’ve seen you read and write before?” He questioned, taking the clipboard back where Owen had handed it. “Only Simple comprehension. I filled in the blanks and context clues mostly. This is.. The words are too..” Owen struggled and Legundo nodded.

“I understand.” He comforted, taking the clipboard in hand and reading through it himself.

“I’ll read it out for you and you can tell me what to fill in.”

Owen blushed furiously at that, holding the neckline of his shawl over his mouth slightly in embarrassment before nodding. They spent a good twenty minutes going over the form and Legundo explaining what the questions meant while Owen loomed over his shoulder. Legundo made an effort to put his finger under the words he was reading to try and subtly help Owen learn the words, but eventually they did finish and they handed the clipboard back to the lady behind the desk.

“Alright, perfect. Just give me a second and you’ll be all done.” She smiled, standing up and leaving into another room. Owen snorted with a huff and went back to sit down, looking like he was a kid about to get in trouble with the principal. Legundo held back a chuckle at the sight before joining him. Owen was still brooding by the time the lady came back with two cards, a small book and a bag.

The two stood and took the items from her, “There’s your cards. As well as a book that just clarifies what we do and our different services.” She explained before plopping the hand held bag into Owens arms. “And this is just a small stash of blood for your troubles, your first deposit will be in two weeks' time.” She informed the pair, before returning to her seat behind the desk.

“Thank you Miss.” Legundo smiled politely, dipping his head towards her which she reciprocated. They soon left, the doctor feeling quite pleased with how it all went. He turned to Owen who was rooting through the bag with a concentrated look.

“Strange packaging.” He muttered, almost to himself. He pulled out a small pouch from the bag that had a small straw with a clasp on the top of it. Legundo hummed at the ingenuity of the pouch while Owen put it back in the bag.

He smiled at the vampire, which earned him a stare in return before they both set off back to the train station. As they made it back onto the bustling Main Street of the city, Owen drew into himself again and kept close to the doctor. Legundo had no idea if the man even realised he was doing it.

They kept walking into the main street and through the crowd of people, Legundo looking at his journal every few minutes to make sure they were on the right track. After a few paces further into the crowd the doctor noticed Owen wasn’t beside him. He looked around, thinking maybe he was just a few paces away but couldn’t see the brown haired man. Legundo felt his heart plummet as he looked around frantically. “Owen?” He called.

He took a breath and began backtracking through the crowd, hoping to find a trace of the vampire. God he was an idiot, he should have just gone around the main street. He could tell Owen wasn’t a fan of crowds but he assumed he’d be fine if they stuck together and were quick. If he didn't find him he had no idea what Owen would do while overwhelmed- he tended to always resort to violence when faced with emotional or uncomfortable situations.

A few minutes of frantic searching was soon unnecessary when he heard a large growl come from his right. He pushed through the crowd to see Owen being pushed around by bustling people, people giving him stares and throwing insults. The vampire looked frightened as his claws itched at his side. He wasn’t level three but Legundo knew he could still do damage. One particularly rude man pushed past the vampire as the doctor moved to get closer and Owen began hissing, his arms coming up defensively. Legundo’s heart dropped and he sprinted up to Owen.

The man gave him a weird look and started berating his “wild behavior” causing the vampire more distress as the people around whispered. The doctor quickly placed a hand on Owen’s shoulder, which seemed to make his state worse- as the vamp went to bite him. Luckily Legundo had good reflexes and managed to remove his arm. “Owen calm down- we’ll leave okay? Back to the quiet streets?” He tried, watching as Owens pupils stayed small and foggy as he growled and flexed his hands.

Legundo sighed and tried blocking Owen from the view of the other people around. Owen went to lunge but Legundo grabbed him by the waist and hoisted the man over his shoulder with a practiced motion. He groaned as his bones complained at the action- but regardless of being discharged he was still in shape. Owen hissed and thrashed but Legundo just began marching out of the main street, ignoring as people whispered and stared- some even laughing at the frankly amusing spectacle. If only they knew how dangerous the two of them were.

Owen cried out and pounded on the doctor's back, causing him to seethe in pain. “Let me go!” Owen cried- his voice cracking as Legundo dragged him out into an empty street.

“I’m sorry- Sorry Just- Stop fighting!” Legundo struggled, pulling Owen back from over his shoulder and onto the ground. Owen struggled against Legundo's grip- not quite as strong as he usually was when he was tier three; but the doctor was holding onto Owens forearms tightly as he tried to get the man's attention. He knew the touch wasn’t helping but he was worried Owen would bolt the second he let go.

He managed to pull Owen into another alley and behind some bins- away from the view of the street and much quieter. Owen had started crying, hissing at Legundo and trying desperately to scratch at the man- managing to break from the veteran's grip and scratch his arm before he managed to get a grip on the vampire's wrists again. Legundo’s heart broke for the man- but he needed to calm down. Maybe this wasn’t working. “Owen!” He yelled, watching as the vampire slowly dissolved into hiccuping sobs and his struggling got weaker.

Legundo slowly let go of the brown haired man’s wrists and watched as he reached them up to clutch his ears, shutting his eyes tightly and facing the ground so his hair covered his face. He pressed himself against the alley wall and slid down it, causing Legundo to follow. Legundo had never seen Owen look so upset- and he’d seen him talking about Louis. His anger he was used to- he could deal with. But this was something else.

“Make it stop-” Owen choked out, starting to rock back and forth as he clutched his ears. Legundo felt sick- he didn’t know how to fix this. He was supposed to help people, he was supposed to be helping Owen. All he could do was sit with Owen while he shook, his head pressed into his knees. At some point he pulled the neckline of his shawl over his nose and mouth, presumably because of the smell of the alley before he went back to his distressed silence.

Legundo stayed close, but didn’t touch the man as he ran through loads of different explanations in his head. He had never been to the city- but when Owen was younger Oakhurst was not that small of a town, surely he’d experienced crowds before. The vampire had said he was an outcast, perhaps he didn’t go into town all that often and wasn't used to crowds. Whatever the reason he had gotten spooked. Overwhelmed was something close to the word. He just needed some support while he calmed down. Vampires did have heightened senses- they could possibly be bothering the older man. Legundo pulled out the book the organisation gave him and started flicking through it.

They actually offered quite a few services the doctor didn’t expect; besides food services there was also therapy/counseling, social events, doctors and access to accommodations or vampire protection programs for those in danger of being found out or killed. It was all very well set up. There was a whole section for daily accommodations and what to use- like sunglasses and veils/headwear for tier 3 vamps- ear plugs for those with especially sensitive ears and softer clothes for those with more sensitive skin. Legundo hummed- pleased with his findings when Owen sniffed beside him.

His tears had calmed down, and he was now wiping his eyes and nose with his sleeve. He was still shaking, his eyes staring out into the distance with a glassy look. Legundo put the book away and shuffled closer to Owen, who finally looked him in the eyes. Legundo gave him an awkward smile, which the vampire did not return, simply looked away and sniffed again, his eyes red raw.

“You don’t- have to explain what happened, I.. I think I can guess.. Uhm.” Legundo stuttered awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck while Owen stared blankly. “We should have gone around the main street, I apologise. I noticed you don’t like crowds and still went.” The doctor sighed apologetically, reaching a hand out to see if Owen might want it. The vampire stared at it for a moment before looking away and placing his hand in the doctors. Legundo smiled at the confirmation and sat closer to Owen so their shoulders touched in a way he hoped was comforting.

“Its- alright. I was just startled is all. I apologise for my.. Outburst.” Owen cringed, running a finger over the scratch on Legundo’s arm, whispering a small apology. Legundo simply ran a thumb over Owens' knuckles and hummed as they sat in silence.

“You're allowed to be overwhelmed Owen. We’ll go a quieter way to the train station.” The doctor comforted, giving Owen's hand a squeeze.

Owen just nodded in return, squeezing back.

“One room please- two beds.” Legundo yawned as he passed some cash across the counter to the small town's tavern keeper. The journey had been long and he was exhausted, he almost envied Owen's ability to never sleep and function just fine- it was truly a marvel he wanted to study if Owen was willing.

They had managed to get into town later in the evening than he had hoped, but luckily the tavern/hotel was open and accepting guests. Otherwise it would have been an uncomfortable night for himself and Owen. They were soon given their key and made their way to the room. At some point Owen had taken all the bags when Legundo stumpled up the stairs. The vampire had thrown him a snarky comment but Legundo didn’t catch it. Making it to their room was amazing- it was small but had plenty of room for the both of them with running water and working lights. (You’d be surprised how many places like these didn’t have either)

Legundo nearly collapsed on the bed when he saw it, but refrained. He had stuff to set up and make sure Owen was alright. He quickly ran into the washroom, doing what needed to be done before splashing his face to hopefully keep him awake for a little bit longer. When he came back to the room Owen had put the bags in the far corner and had picked the bed that was facing the door. He had taken his shawl, vest and shoes off, leaving him in his undershirt, trousers and socks. Legundo had yet to see the man without his bandages though.

To Legundo's surprise, Owen was yawning, rubbing his eyes. The doctor yawned in return and began taking off his top layer of clothes. He usually slept in just his undergarments but considering his company he felt rather self conscious in doing so- so he grabbed the lightest pair of trousers and shirt he could find from his bag and retreated back into the wash room. He tried as hard as possible to avoid looking at the scars that littered his war-torn body while he changed before making his way back into the room, tossing his clothes helplessly into his bag and sitting on his bed. He rubbed his eyes and looked up to see Owen perched on his own bed- staring at him. The doctor sighed, slightly amused “Right- vampires don’t sleep. Sorry I don't have much for you to do while I-”

“I can sleep.” Owen interrupted, causing Legundo to startle as he stared sleepily at the vampire.

“Pardon?” He asked, wondering if he’d misheard. Owen grinned cheekily, which Legundo thought he should do more often as his big brown eyes creased and a single dimple appeared on his cheek.

“Well- vampires usually sleep if they're incredibly injured, but we can also shut off our bodies for rest or to fasten the passage of time.” Owen purred like he was reciting a text he had read and was proud of his knowledge. Legundo nodded, he supposed that made sense evolutionary- especially if vampires could run on no sleep forever.

“I- uh don’t need to obviously but. I- enjoy it occasionally.” The man informed, playing with his hair slightly in embarrassment. Owen enjoyed sleeping. Legundo nodded as if confirming something he already knew. Cat.

“Right, well then. I’m too tired to ask any further questions but there will be some-” a yawn interrupted his train of thought as he pulled back the covers and crawled under them. “-Tommorow.” He finished, rolling over and getting comfortable. He heard Owen chuckle slightly, making another comment Legundo was too tired to catch before he turned the light off for the doctor, who was already fading away into sleep.

Most nights were not calm for the doctor. Many were full of death and gunfire, the stench of blood and poison as it dripped down from the bottle in his hands to the well below him. The sounds of people begging for help and all he could do was watch.

This night was the same, he awoke in a pool of his own sweat and tears and the sounds of war echoing in his ears. He gasped as he clutched his chest, his heart beating so fast he worried it would pop out of his chest. He tried and failed to slow his breathing as he sat in his bed, tears running down his face as he tried desperately to stay present.

“Doc?”

Where was he? Where were his comrades in arms? Where were his friends? No he’s not there anymore. He’s not. He’s not. He took a deep breath as a figure came into view, he was shaking as a hand was pressed onto his shoulder. He jumped, but the hand didn’t move. Another was added as he attempted to get his breathing to even out and the figure became easier to see.

It was Owen, he looked groggy and confused- but also.. worried. It was an interesting look on the man as he held the doctor's shoulders. The man’s look of panic was almost enough to ground the doctor as he started to lose control of his breathing. He couldn’t hear what Owen was saying with the sounds of begging for help filling his brain seeping from his memories into his present.

He smiled weakly at Owen, who just gave him another confused look. “I’m fine-“ he panted, wiping his face. Guilt made his body feel so heavy at the simple action. He placed a hand over his mouth as the voices got louder, a sob tearing through him embarrassingly as his breathing hitched. He felt Owen shuffle closer, but he barely registered when he wrapped his arms around the doctor between his heaving gasping sobs.

Owen started rubbing his hands up and down his back in an attempt to soothe the doctor, he was speaking but Legundo couldn’t hear him- his ears were ringing. He shook his head and allowed himself to bury his face into the crook of the vampire's neck, clutching onto the back of the other’s shirt desperately as he sobbed pathetically.

A few more moments passed before the sounds of gunfire and screaming bled back into his memories, Owen rocking the doctor back and forth in a grounding motion. Legundo pulled back, wiping his eyes and attempting to ignore the fact he’d had an episode in front of Owen the first night they spent together. Owen tried to say something but the ringing in his ears persisted

Legundo put a hand up to silence him for a moment as he tapped the side of his head and ears in hopes of getting the ringing to stop. A few more deep breaths and his mind went back to its original form of turmoil. He was still crying, scrubbing the tears away just for more to fall. The noise never stopped, and neither did the guilt- but at least now he could hear the world outside of his head.

“Sorry- did I uh- wake…? You?” Legundo choked, still not entirely sure if Owen could in fact sleep. Owen just shook his head,

“I was getting a drink and you just shot up-“ The vampire huffed, reaching a hand out as if to touch Legundo but hesitated. Legundo gave him a sad smile as he leaned his head against the bed frame.

“Right.”

An awkward silence settled over them as Owen gave him an intense look. Legundo found almost everything Owen did was intense. He didn’t mind though. In some instances it was quite amusing.

“Was it a nightmare?” Owen asked, his face softening slightly. Legundo sighed, but nodded, causing Owen to nod in return.

“I understand.”

Legundo had an odd feeling that he did.

Legundo took another few breaths, scrubbing away the last of his tears while Owen stood up. Legundo’s gaze followed the man as he grabbed an empty bottle- presumably the one he had been drinking from prior and disappeared into the washroom, reappearing soon with the bottle now clean and full of water. Legundo gave him a look but Owen just handed him the bottle without making eye contact.

Legundo nodded with a sad smile and took a sip, suddenly realising how dry his mouth was and taking a bigger gulp. Owen just watched in patient silence while Legundo finished the bottle, not making any comment on the water dribbling down the doctor's chin. When he was finished Owen took the bottle and put it on the floor.

They sat in silence for another few minutes, but it was less awkward than the first in Legundo's opinion. He began rubbing his temple in an attempt to rid himself of the oncoming headache, but eventually gave up to look at Owen, who was looking at him with dilated pupils- his ears twitching anxiously.

“Do you think you can sleep? It’s still late.” The brown eyed man asked simply, quickly avoiding eye contact with the Doctor.

“Yes, apologies.” He lied, slightly flustered by the event before fixing his covers and getting comfortable, his face burning. Owen didn’t say anything, but he also didn’t move from where he sat at the end of Legundo's bed. The doctor didn’t particularly mind, having someone there that he trusted would probably help- so he didn’t comment on it and just turned his back to the vampire while he pulled the covers up and over his nose.

“Goodnight Doc.” Owen whispered as Legundo felt exhaustion seep back into his bones and glue him to the warmth of the hotel bed.

“Goodnight Owen.” He mumbled, closing his eyes and attempting to rid his mind of the awful memories. The silence made it worse, and after a few moments of painful silence he heard a soft rumbling from beside him.

In the doctor's hazed mind he just turned slightly to see Owen, sitting cross legged on his bed. He was closer to Legundo than he had been prior and was now purring with a sour look on his face. Owen glanced at the doctor then looked away again, his face a slightly darker shade than it had been before- but it was almost too dark for Legundo to tell. “I’ll stay until you fall asleep.” Owen said in a whisper, so quiet Legundo almost didn’t catch it. But he did.

The doctor turned back around, smiling to himself as he focused on the comforting sound of Owens purrs and the feeling of the purring rumbling through the mattress from where Owen was sitting. He almost couldn’t hear the screaming as he drifted off into sleep.

Legundo didn’t wake again until the morning. The sun was just poking out from above the horizon and shining through the cheap hotel curtains.

The doctor yawned and sat up in his bed, stretching and reaching for his monocle. He sat in the lazy silence for a moment before turning his head to Owen’s bed. He almost gasped audibly at the sight of the brown haired man, curled up in his blankets and pillows.

Owen had managed to make himself an almost nest like arrangement of his bed clothes, having his head resting sideways on a pillow that was all askew. He was wrapped up so tight in his blankets he was almost completely lost in them. Legundo could hardly believe this was the man that killed over two thousand people in a single night.

Legundo quickly stood up and grabbed his journal from his bag, opening the page he had dedicated to the study of vampire anatomy and began scribbling in it silently. He creeped closer to the vampire and stared. The man looked cozy- but also quite dead. There was no breathing coming from the vampire, no rise and fall of a peaceful slumber and no flickering of the eyes under his eyelids.

It was the most peaceful Legundo had ever seen Owen. And the closest to dead. Just as the doctor was about to get closer, Owens' eyes opened, glaring at him as if he hadn’t been asleep at all. Legundo was ashamed to admit he jumped slightly. Owen and Legundo stared at each other for what felt like an eternity before Legundo broke eye contact.

“Comfy?” He tried to joke as Owen shuffled in his make-shift nest, pulling his arms up so he could rest his head in the crook of them lazily as he stared at the doctor with a bored expression. The man yawned, exposing all his sharp teeth and emitting a noise similar to that of a dog yawning. Or a cat Legundo supposed.

“Very.” Owen hummed, giving him a playful look while the doctor began reassembling his stuff.

“‘you enjoy watching people sleep or am I just special?” The vampire teased, stretching his arms out in front of him and flexing his claws slightly. Legundo just huffed a laugh as he turned back around to the vampire.

“I suppose you're special. Never seen a dead person wake up.” He tried to joke, grabbing his clothes for the day and laying them on the bed before repacking his bag. Owen just hummed from where he lay lazily tucked into the bed, staring at the doctor.

Legundo avoided eye contact as he grabbed his clothes and disappeared into the washroom and changed as quickly as he could before leaving. He felt exhausted but that was the norm almost every day these days. Coming back to the room he found Owen still wrapped up in blankets- but his head was not poking out like it had been before.

Legundo just sighed fondly before poking the mound of plush and body, earning him a soft growl from inside the mound. “Up we get sleepy head, there’s work to be done.” He said, pulling the blanket back slightly to reveal a very grumpy Owen glaring back at him. Legundo couldn’t help but laugh at the sight, pulling back when Owen swiped half heartedly at him.

“Alright, fine.” He laughed, “you can sleep while I go get breakfast. I’ll be back soon.” The doctor smiled, grabbing a small bag and slinging it over his shoulder while Owen watched in silence.

“Bye.” Owen hummed, turning around in the bed, causing Legundo to chuckle to himself again as he left the room.

“See you in a bit.”

Legundo had a suspicion Owen was avoiding doing any actual work.

Over the few weeks they had been travelling together, any time Legundo had to treat someone Owen always found a way to not be present. Even simple check ups had Owen trying to find an excuse to leave. Legundo wasn't sure what it was. Perhaps he was regretting his decision to travel. Perhaps he had decided to try to find a way to leave without Legundo noticing.

But Owen always returned. Whether it was outside the building Legundo was treating someone in or the place they had found lodging that night, Owen always met with him afterwards. The doctor started to get worried when Owen started looking physically ill after each check up. Despite being a vampire, Owen had a tanner complexion than even Legundo- and every time the doctor grabbed something from his tool kit or got gloves or a mask he could swear he saw Owen turn two shades too pale.

Legundo knew Owen had a history with doctors- but he had expressed that Legundo was an exception. He knew Legundo wouldn't hurt him. So why did he act like this every time they were in a medical setting? The doctor didn’t get a clear answer from the vampire. All he said was he was ‘leaving the important stuff to the professional.’ Which didn’t satisfy Legundo at all. He had told Owen all he needed to do was help him with his equipment and maybe even hold down a patient or two- but Owen didn’t seem to even do that.

He didn’t get his answer until he managed to convince Owen to stay for a simple procedure. He had told Owen he needed to help him with his equipment while he was wrapping up a patient’s wounds. Owen didn’t say anything, he just nodded and took the bandages and syringes in hand. Legundo gave him a look but didn’t mention it as he began treating the patient.

He administered the medication to the patient- who was a middle aged man who had badly injured his arm under some smouldering tree branches. The Man’s arm was covered in blisters and burns, as well as being broken. Owen stayed silent, his eyes glazed as he went through the motions of handing Legundo the things he asked for- holding the things he asked for and helping apply the things he asked for. Legundo thought maybe he was grumpy about finally being asked to help out. Owen flinched hard when Legundo snapped the man’s arm back into place, and looked extremely ill when he and Owen began wrapping the arm into place.

Once they were finished the patient thanked them, his arm all bandaged up and cleaned and left. The door swung shut behind him from the room the pair had bought for their stay in the current town. Legundo started putting the bandages back in their respective places when he turned to see Owen shaking. Before he could even ask what was wrong the man ran to the bin near the bed and began violently throwing up.

Legundo yelped in shock, running over and pulling Owens' hair away from his face on instinct. He rubbed circles into the vampire's back as he sobbed and gagged. The throwing up did eventually stop but Owen continued to sob, putting his hands up to his hair and beginning to pull. Legundo managed to detangle the man’s claws from his hair and pull him away from the bin and into a sitting position on the floor.

The vampire was muttering, but Legundo couldn’t pick up what he was saying besides a few pleas. Legundo didn’t understand, especially when Owen started clawing at the bandages along his arms. “Owen- Owen listen to me- hey What's wrong? Talk to me!” The doctor called in vain as he tried to stop Owen from reaching his skin. The bandages were unraveling off of the man’s arms and blood was dripping from where Owen had scratched himself- unfortunately this seemed to cause the man even more distress so he stopped clawing and hid his head in his hands.

Legundo was starting to panic when Owen started gasping and begging for something to ‘stop’. Owen gagged again and Legundo grabbed the bin and held it up in case Owen needed it- but all the vampire could do was gag and gag but nothing came up besides more spit. Legundo started going through any possible medical scenarios, maybe he had eaten something bad or came into contact with silver or garlic?

“No more.” Owen heaved, “no more treatments.” He whispered, sounding so broken and desperate as more tears spilled and his lips wobbled pathetically.

That’s when it clicked.

This was some sort of trauma response to the treatments Owen had undergone while he was human. Owen had confessed to him they hadn’t been pleasant. This wasn't a medical reaction to anything he’d eaten or interacted with, but a mental one. Legundo suddenly felt so stupid as to not realise even just holding the doctor's equipment might have made Owen feel uneasy or unsafe. Legundo had experienced trauma responses first hand and he still hadn’t noticed the signs.

A deep shame washed over him as he pulled Owen into a tight embrace in hopes of calming him down. He made sure to avoid the man’s arms and only grab his torso, holding him tightly as the vampire struggled half heartedly. Owen sobbed, stopping his struggles and slumping against Legundo with a defeated hiss.

Legundo began rubbing circles into Owens' back and occasionally running a hand through his hair, which seemed to help calm him down. The doctor whispered soft apologies and reassurances as Owens sobs died down to soft gasping whimpers. Legundo felt a familiar sense of guilt settle in his skull as Owen cried, the sounds of others crying with him in his head.

Soon Owen settled, slumped against Legundo's shoulder while silent tears rolled down his cheeks. Legundo continued to run his fingers through Owens' hair, which he finally was coherent enough to lean into. “Legs?” Owen sniffed as he pulled back, tears still streaming down his face. Owen wiped his face and stared at the floor, his face turning a bright red.

“Owen I am so sorry. I should have known you don’t like-“

“It’s- it’s alright. I should have told you.” Owen stuttered, still shaking as Legundo went to root through Owen's bag for something to drink. He handed the Vampire a small packet of blood which he took with a shy smile and started to drink.

“I knew you didn’t have fond memories in medical environments and I still made you relive it.” Legundo sighed with shame.

Owen shook his head again, he was still trembling. “N-no. I should be over it by now. I told you I’d help and I want to help. I do, but I just-“

“It’s just too much too soon.” Legundo finished. Owen nodded, taking another sip and avoiding eye contact. Legundo knew all too well the struggle, especially when the trigger for something like this was so easy to come by. It was frustrating and made you feel weak and pathetic. He didn’t want Owen to feel that way.

“You don’t have to be ‘over’ something that affected you negatively. A large part of your life revolved around your health.” Legundo insisted, watching as Owens' ears dipped downwards.  “And in turn a large part of your life revolved around doctors and treatments that weren't pleasant and didn’t work.”

Owen nodded as Legundo continued. “I’m sure most of the treatments you had undergone were traumatic. Considering medical advances at the time.” Legundo hesitated before running a hand over Owens' hair gently as he drank.

“You don’t need to help me with my medical practice to heal and help people. We’ll work on it.”

Owen nodded, his bottom lip trembling again and tears flowing faster. He tried to hide his face in his hair but Legundo just brushed it away and wiped away his tears with his thumb before pulling Owen into another hug. The vampire tensed for a second before melting into it and finally wrapping his arms in turn around the doctor. He buried his face into Legundo's neck, right where his bite mark was.

“We’ll get there.” Legundo promised as he played with Owens' hair absentmindedly.

“We?” The brown haired man asked almost timidly. The doctor pulled back to get a good look at Owen. He had tear tracks running down his face, his eyes puffy and red. Legundo could see the bandages over Owen's arms had slightly unraveled- revealing the scarred flesh beneath the doctor had never seen. Owen pulled his arms back and tried to hide them in his shawl.

“Of course. We’re in this together now.” The doctor replied, gently trying to coax Owen's arms out from under the shawl. Owen shook his head, fresh tears threatening to spill causing Legundo to stop in his efforts. He stood up and grabbed the bandages back out from his bag and sat down in front of Owen again, watching painfully as Owen tried to retreat into a corner, fear fresh in his eyes.

“I can give you these and you could do it yourself, or I can do it. Whatever makes you feel most comfortable.” Legundo smiled easily, watching as Owens' skittish eyes flicked between Legundo and the bandages. The vampire took another grounding breath before he took his arms out from under his shawl and looked at them, gently pulling the bandages away from his skin.

He glanced up at Legundo nervously as the bandages gave way to skin, a few scratch marks lining his forearms as blood dripped onto the floor. Owen flinched but grabbed a roll of bandages. Legundo was shocked Owen hadn’t left the room or told him to leave yet, but he didn’t say anything as he started cleaning the scratches and bandaging them with a practiced precision that showed he had had years of practice at this particular task.

Once he finished one arm he took a shaky breath, unraveling the second and gently pressing the bandages into Legundo's palm. He shakily extended the arm, fear and shame burning on his features. Legundo just stared for a moment while Owen trembled, arm still extended, expectingly.

“Just do it before I change my mind. That arm is always a pain to do.” Owen spat, trying to harden his gaze into something more intimidating and failing.

Legundo just nodded and gently reached for Owen’s arm, watching the man’s face as he scrunched his eyes in anticipation as if waiting for a fatal blow. Legundo was gentle when he took the arm, slowly opening the bandages at a pace that didn’t seem to distress Owen in any way before cleaning the cuts as gently as he could.

Owen flinched at the contact, biting his lip and having to look away while the doctor began wrapping his arm. Legundo realised just how intimate an act this must be for Owen as they paused the entire moment so Owen could take some breaths and wipe his eyes. Legundo was patient, feeling so proud of Owen for trusting Legundo enough to let him do something so clearly out of his comfort zone.

They’d been travelling together for a month and a half, but they’d only known each other for four. But Legundo still felt a deep connection to the man before him. They were opposite in every way, and yet so similar. Owen was aggressive and held grudges, Legundo was patient and non judgmental. They both were stubborn and were deeply flawed. Legundo wasn't sure how exactly he viewed Owen and all he’d done, but he respected him and trusted him to be on his side. He could only hope Owen felt the same.

The doctor continued to wrap Owen’s arm, whispering encouragement and wiping Owen's tears as they went. The pace was slow but Legundo was patient, he finished wrapping the arm and tucked the end of the bandage in gently, holding Owen’s arm tenderly for a moment before letting the man hide them behind the shawl again. The vampire’s shaking had died down only slightly, but he had stopped crying and he now wore a blank far away expression Legundo couldn’t place.

The doctor reached a hand forward to run a hand through the man’s hair once more- which seemed to help ground him some before, but Owen flinched, his eyes sharpening. Legundo went to retreat his hand when Owens' eyes dilated again and he slowly leaned forward and dipped his head in invitation. Legundo held back a smile as he gently ran a hand through Owen’s hair, eliciting a shaky sigh from the former.

Legundo, growing bolder, sat closer to Owen and started running both hands through his brown curls, admiring how they fell over his shoulders. Owen let out a sad noise, pulling the band from his hair and letting it fall down his back. Legundo hadn’t realised just how long it was- but also how tangled the hair was. He would have to go and invest in a hairbrush for the vampire, as Legundo had only ever seen the man use his claws to painfully scrape at the ends so it looked somewhat presentable.

Legundo allowed Owen to turn himself around so he could have full access to his hair, letting out a hum at the sight. Legundo began gently untangling the worst of it, muttering apologies when Owen flinched. He heard Owen sniff, as he wiped fresh tears away from his face, making Legundo press a soft kiss to the back of his head without thinking much of it, drinking in the sound of Owen's small gasp at the action. Legundo would admit that Owen didn’t smell the best, considering his lack of knowledge about hygiene, but that was an easy fix for later.

After a few more moments of silence, interrupted only by Owen's soft sniffles and Legundo's kind words, Owen finally decided he was done with contact. He shuffled forwards and began putting his hair back into a ponytail, giving Legundo a grateful look when he backed away to give the vampire some space. While Owen was running a clawed hand through his hair anxiously, Legundo grabbed him a packet of blood.

Owen took it gratefully, turning away from Legundo and taking small sips while Legundo retreated to his bed with his journal. They sat in silence while Owen tried to put himself back together; Legundo made it a point to not look over at Owen and focus on his work. After more silence Owen took a deep breath, putting his empty blood bag into his bag and standing up, flattening his shirt and tightening his ponytail.

“I’m going to go on a walk.” He said simply, grabbing his axe and putting it on his belt like he did every time he left the room. Legundo just nodded,

“Be safe.” He said on instinct, watching as Owen grabbed the door handle. He paused for a moment before looking at the doctor.

“Thank you. Doctor.” He nodded, quickly leaving the room without letting Legundo say anything in return. Legundo just smiled, nodding to himself and returned to his journal with a comfortable silence.

“Let's go to the town festival.”

Legundo looked up from his desk to see Owen standing beside him, wearing one of the outfits he picked out on their last shopping trip. A simple dusty orange vest and white shirt, with his brown trousers and boots. He had his hair put half up half down, his hair framing his face in a way that made Legundo pause to admire it before processing the vampire's words.

It had been over half a year since they started travelling together and with Legundo's help Owen had taken to catering to his hygiene much easier, tending to spend a while maintaining his curls. Legundo never expected Owen to care much about his appearance, but when he asked Owen just shrugged. “Louis always liked my curls.” He had said, brushing through his hair with the brush Legundo had bought him with a contented look.

“There’s a festival?” He asked, looking Owen up and down, silently admiring. Owens' face turned slightly red but his face remained neutral.

“Yes. It’s a music festival. I want to go with you.” The brown eyed man said simply, putting his hands in his pockets. Legundo hummed, closing his journal.

“Sounds fun, let me get changed.”

Legundo smiled when Owens' ears perked up and his eyes twinkled in excitement when Legundo went to grab some clothes suitable for a festival night. Owen hovered excitedly by the door to their hotel room while Legundo hurried to get ready, pulling on a simple waistcoat and shirt he liked to wear when off duty.

He grabbed their room keys and a few other belongings before they both left the room, locking the door behind them and making their way down into the main reception. Owen hadn’t been lying, Legundo noticed the lobby full of lights and posters he hadn’t bothered to read before. People with instruments were hurrying out the door of the hotel and into the street where Legundo could see the festival was starting.

Legundo had never been a very musical person, he couldn’t sing and he couldn’t play any instrument. He did enjoy the odd music or band that would play on the street but he never went out of his way to listen to anything. He and Owen made their way out and into the town, slowly making it to the town square where music was playing and people were dancing. The pubs were full of people and music and singing and it was honestly wonderful.

Legundo turned to see Owen light up at the sight of the festival, he had a wide grin on his face as he dragged the doctor into the crowd to get closer to the band of people playing their song with such vigour it was almost inspiring. Legundo couldn’t help but smile at Owen’s enthusiasm towards the music, his feet tapping to the beat and his hands itching at his side as if he wanted to dance.

The song soon died down and the man playing the guitar cheered and turned to look directly at Legundo and Owen. “Well who are you two fine men? You the doctor?” He asked with a grin, the two men approached the guitarist while Legundo nodded.

“I am.”

“Well, either of you got an affinity for an instrument? We love seeing new faces get involved.” The man grinned, his whole body lighting up as he spoke. The band cheered in response, agreeing whole heartedly. Legundo laughed but shook his head.

“Afraid not fellas. I’m not much for music.” He admitted, dipping his head in apology. The band booed but nodded.

“I can play the violin.” Owen said timidly, running a clawed hand through his hair as he spoke, avoiding eye contact. The band cheered and the guitarist’s smile widened.

“Well that’s perfect! Marcy!” He turned to a lady who was holding an accordion. She perked up with a hum.

“Go fetch yer fiddle would you, for this fine fellow?”

The lady nodded with a smile and disappeared behind a stall and grabbed a small case, bringing it forward. Owen was practically vibrating by Legundo's side- from nerves or excitement he couldn’t tell. Legundo was shocked Owen even knew how to play an instrument at all. He doubted, given his upbringing, he would’ve been able to afford a violin let alone lessons.

“It’s been a while, you’ll have to excuse my mistakes.” Owen added as he pulled the fiddle out from its case with shaky hands. The lady- Marcy was her name, grabbed a chair and set it beside the band. Owen gladly sat in it, pulling his long hair away from one shoulder and resting it over the other while he rested his chin on the fiddle, holding the bow in a way that looked almost correct, but odd.

“That's alright, s’long as you can play a fine dancing tune. You play first and we’ll pick up after you.”  The guitarist comforted, placing a hand on Owens shoulder. Owen sparred a glance at Legundo and tried to ignore the crowd as they cheered for Owen to start. Owen took a breath, closing his eyes and going through the different notes of the fiddle one by one. His scales Legundo presumed.

Owen readjusted himself on the seat and pressed the fiddle closer, taking another breath before placing his fingers in a way that couldn’t have been comfortable and began playing. The tune was upbeat and playful, but unfamiliar. Owen was tense at first, but after a few notes he started to loosen up. People cheered behind Legundo and the doctor couldn’t help but stare as Owen picked up his pace. People clapped in beat to his tune.

The tune was perfect for dancing, and as he played people made their way into the middle of the square again and started to do just that. Owen’s grin grew as the people danced. Legundo wasn’t that big of a music junky, but even he would admit Owens playing was brilliant. And Legundo doubted he’d touched an instrument in hundreds of years. Muscle memory he supposed.

Owen stopped and started again a few times, messing up and his face turning red, but the band just cheered and comforted him, telling him to go again. After a few minutes of playing uninterrupted, the band began to pick up the beat and follow his song. They played as close as they could to the beat of Owen’s strange song, cheering and laughing as they went.

Soon enough Owen was doing the same, standing up with the band and spinning as he played. This was the happiest Legundo had ever seen Owen. As the band played, other people joined, taking instruments and joining the chorus. People danced and clapped as they played and Legundo felt an overwhelming sense of community envelope him. He had an odd feeling this is how this festival went every year.

The band danced around and Owen looked right at home, twirling and dipping his head as he played. He even let out a few whoops at particularly high parts of the song. Owen did mess up a note occasionally, but he quickly picked himself back up and blended back in with the band seamlessly. Legundo was impressed and had to catch himself from staring as Owen danced and twirled and played at rapid speed, his hair flowing behind him in such an ethereal manner.

Legundo still found it so hard to believe this was the man who had committed such awful atrocities in the name of love and justice.

The song finished and Owen panted slightly, his ears sticking up and his eyes dilated. Legundo could hear the purring from his chest from where he stood and despite being in public he didn’t particularly care if Owen was enjoying himself so much. Owen cheered, before coughing and clearing his throat, looking away embarrassed. The band just cheered as well and began patting him on the back as he handed the fiddle back to Marcy.

“You’ve got an odd way of playing mister.” Marcy said with a smile, putting the fiddle back in the case. Owen blushed and shrugged.

“I had to teach myself. And it wasn’t with a fancy fiddle like yours.” He admitted, smiling kindly at the lady. Legundo felt his heart swell at the interaction, glad Owen was finally coming out of himself even a little. This wasn’t the same grumpy Owen he’d met in those woods all those months ago. The doctor was glad to get a glimpse of this side of the man.

“Well that’s awful impressive. You played good.” The lady smiled back, sitting back down at the band’s stall and holding her accordion as the band struck up their routine once more.

Owen nodded to the band, who all dipped their heads in return before making his way back to Legundo's side. The doctor stared at Owen, his mouth agap. “That was incredible.” He praised, watching as Owen shrugged shyly.

“I wrote that tune years ago. Back when I was still sick.” The man huffed, a sad look on his face.

“You wrote that?” Legundo gapped, astonished as Owen shrugged again.

“Yeah, it’s not much. Playing used to help with keeping my fingers from atrophying. I made myself an instrument similar to a violin when I found a busted one.” Owen smiled, whisked away in a memory as he spoke. “And it helped keep my mind off of.. you know.” Legundo gave Owen a kind smile, placing a hand on his shoulder.

“We’ll have to get you your own then won’t we? Can’t let that talent go to waste.” He smiled, watching as Owens face morphed into shock.

“No, that's unnecessary. I wouldn’t even know when I’d use something like that.” Owen tried to argue, shaking his head like he’d made up his mind. Legundo just huffed and crossed his arms.

“Well you could always play for me.” He watched as the vampires face turned a deep red. Owen spluttered but shook his head.

“Sure doc. Whatever you say.” He huffed, trying to seem tough as he snubbed his face to the side with a frown. Legundo just laughed, grabbing Owen’s arm and dragging him over to where people were dancing and cheering.

“Wanna dance?” He asked, admiring how Owen’s face seemed to light up at the question.

“I don’t know this one.” Owen admitted as he looked out into the crowd. They were all doing some sort of line dance jig. Twirling in each other's arms and going around in the circle. Legundo just shrugged.

“We’ll watch and learn.” He insisted, copying the position of the people and taking Owen’s hands. Owen tilted his head slightly in confusion, but copied Legundo's action. They watched the people go through the motions before copying. Stepping in to meet each other then stepping back out and repeat, before linking their arms and spinning in a circle and repeat. Then Legundo took Owen’s hand and spun it around his head, causing the vampire to twirl with a shocked noise.

They copied the actions slowly the first few times but once they grew confident they knew the dance they joined the circle of people. The people beside them smiled and cheered as they joined. People clapped to the beat of the music as they danced. The circle all connected and some partners switched, Owen and Legundo did the same. Legundo was a little disappointed he couldn’t dance the entire turn with Owen, but he knew they’d meet again when they went around the circle.

Owen looked a bit distressed about dancing with a stranger, but the man he was dancing with was kind and gentle as they danced, guiding him through the motions. By the time they met again, Owen was all smiles, dancing confidently and laughing all the way. He grabbed Legundo's hands easily and spun him around, eliciting a laugh from the other.

When the music stopped, everyone cheered, exhausted and sweaty from the dancing, but happy nonetheless. Legundo panted, feeling exhausted himself- he’d never been too good at dancing, but it was a simple enough dance and no one seemed to mind he was clumsy with his feet. Legundo turned to Owen to see the vampire grinning from ear to ear, two dimples prominent as he looked around the festival in awe. He didn’t look tired at all. Perks of being undead he supposed.

A new song struck up and everyone separated into groups of their friends, dancing how they saw fit. People swinging their dresses or skirts to the beat of the song, people laughing at each other’s awkward movements and other groups forming small circles for a different line dance. Legundo panted, not exactly wanting to dance anymore, but Owen obviously didn’t agree. He started twirling and dancing around the square as best he could to the beat of the music. His eyes closed as he absorbed the sounds of the festival.

Legundo just crossed his arms and tapped his foot to the beat, watching Owen dance with rapt attention, smiling fondly. Owen really was adorable, his hair swinging behind him as he danced and swayed. A few moments passed and Owen seemed to snap back, pausing his dancing with a huff as a deep blush crept up to his cheeks.

“You can keep dancing, I’m just tired. You’re very good.” Legundo comforted, watching as Owen wiped his face awkwardly with his fist.

“Let’s get food.” The brown haired man said instead, grabbing Legundo's hand and dragging him over to the food stalls. Legundo just rolled his eyes at the Man’s antics but followed nonetheless, enjoying the comforting pressure of Owens cold hand in his warm one.

Once they reached the stalls, Owen dropped his hand, much to the doctor’s disappointment. They walked around the different stalls until they found some food Legundo could stomach. Some sandwich that made his mouth water. He tried to pay the lady at the stall for it but she just shook her head and told him it was on the house. He smiled at her hospitality and took the sandwich gladly.

The two men soon found a bench to sit at, Owen pulling out a discreet packet of blood to sip on while Legundo ate. The silence was comfortable.

“Thank you.” Owen said after a moment. Legundo finished chewing and looked at Owen, confused.

“What for?” He asked, watching as Owen cringed.

“For being so patient with me.” The vampire admitted, taking a sip from his blood bag.

“You make me feel.. like the piece of my soul I lost is still here. I’m sorry I’m so unpleasant.”

Legundo shook his head, placing a hand on the other man’s shoulder, causing him to look up at the doctor with those sad brown eyes Legundo couldn’t help but adore.

“You’re not unpleasant. You're just hurting. I’m glad I could help.” He smiled, before removing the hand from Owen’s shoulder and rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. “Travelling with you makes me feel less miserable. You’ve helped me through some tough nights and I’ll forever be thankful for that.” He admitted, Owen smiled slightly at the comment, looking at his feet.

“I would call you my friend Owen. Even if you're only travelling with me to right your wrongs. I still consider you my friend.” The doctor sighed, not looking at Owen as he finished his sandwich. Owen was silent for a moment before speaking up quietly.

“I would consider you my friend too.” The vampire nodded, putting his empty packet of blood back into his pocket. Legundo smiled.

They both sat in silence, Legundo gently pressing himself into Owens side, relishing in how the other pressed back. They stared out into the town square, watching people dance and laugh together without a care in the world, Owens soft purrs rumbling between them.

They had a long way to go. But Legundo had a feeling they’d be just fine. Together.

Notes:

Hello again!

Some headcanons I have that I put throughout:
1) Owen is autistic- vampirism is a metaphor for disability as well as queerness.
2) Owen loves music. Based on his original concepts for his character. He can play the violin and piano. (He taught himself the violin and doesn’t play it correctly at all but it still sounds good. And Louis taught him the Piano.)
3) all vampires have different ways of presenting their vampirism. Some have longer nails or fangs, some have wings etc.

Thank you so much for reading! This is my longest one shot to date! I worked hard on this for a long while so I hope you enjoyed.
Ideas for future fics are welcome and comments are much appreciated <33
