Gotham, some time later.
Jason
Jason runs.
Gotham blurs beneath him— brick and steel and neon smearing into a single, relentless horizon as he clears rooftops one leap at a time, boots striking concrete with a violence that rattles up through his bones. His arms are locked tight around the weight against his chest, instinctively shielded, cradled closer than he means to.
Tim is warm. Too warm.
Bruce is down behind them. Not dead. Jason knows that with the same certainty he knows how to land, how to roll, how to keep moving when everything in his body is screaming to stop. The shot wasn’t lethal. He hadn’t aimed to kill. He’d aimed to end the chase.
Batman will live.
Jason vaults over a low wall and barely feels the impact as he hits the next roof. His breath comes fast and shallow, lungs burning, adrenaline screaming so loud it drowns out everything else— except the thoughts he can’t stop.
I didn’t come back to do this.
His grip tightens reflexively when Tim shifts, a faint sound tearing out of him— too soft to be a word, more breath than voice.
“Batman,” Tim murmurs.
Jason’s jaw locks.
Of course he does.
The word lands like a blow, heavier than the gun ever was. Tim’s head lolls against Jason’s shoulder, eyes half-lidded, unfocused. He isn’t awake. Not really. The toxins in his system and the chaos of it all have him caught somewhere between consciousness and freefall, nerves firing without direction.
“Hey,” Jason mutters without thinking, a useless sound ripped loose by momentum. “Hey—”
Tim doesn’t respond. His fingers curl weakly into Jason’s jacket, then slacken again.
Behind them, the city roars on, indifferent.
Jason lands hard, stumbles, and recovers. He can still feel it— Batman’s presence, the pressure of pursuit, even now. The shape of him, ingrained. The certainty that Bruce will get back up. That he always does.
That isn’t what scares Jason.
What scares him is the quiet.
The second Bruce is no longer there — no shadow on the rooftop, no weight in the air — Tim goes still.
Not calmer. Not relieved.
Empty.
Like something essential has been unplugged.
Jason feels it then, sharp and undeniable, slicing clean through the noise in his head.
This isn’t relief.
This is absence.
His stomach drops.
I didn’t come back to protect him.
He hadn’t planned this. Any of it. He’d told himself a story — about vengeance, about making a point, about ending a chapter that should never have been written. He’d convinced himself this was about balance. About correction.
About replacement.
But nothing about this feels like punishment now.
Jason clears another gap, muscles screaming as he twists midair and lands with a grunt, barely absorbing the impact before pushing off again. He adjusts his hold automatically, tucking Tim closer, shielding his head with his own shoulder as if Bruce might still materialise out of the dark.
He won’t.
Not right now.
The realisation settles into Jason’s chest with a sickening finality.
He’s crossed a line.
Not by shooting Bruce. Not by running.
By what he’s holding.
He didn’t steal Robin from Batman.
He stole a child from the only structure that child knows how to exist inside.
The thought makes his throat tighten, breath hitching hard enough that it almost costs him his footing.
If this was what it took to save him—
Jason launches himself into the dark, jaw clenched around the rest of the thought.
He doesn’t know what that says about Bruce.
He doesn’t know what that says about him.
And the city keeps rushing up to meet him as the world snaps violently, mercilessly—
—to before.
