Jack and she stood there for a moment, an intense, overwhelming awkwardness between them. Jack broke the silence, “I didn’t realize you knew my neighbour.”

“Um, I don’t really.” Samira instantly regretted saying that as soon as it left her mouth. “I was just leaving, actually.”
“At six in the morning?”
“Yep.”
“Hmm.” The sound was low, almost neutral, but with a slight edge to it.
Samira stood, her jacket dangling from her arms, which she held tight to her chest. “I wanted to get an early start to my morning.”
