"I'm afraid of four-letter words like 'love' 'for' and 'ever' (Or whatever)"

Summary:

Much like anybody choosing to be in the library on this day, Damon was lonely on Valentine's Day. Unlike most people in the library, Damon was being hounded by a matchmaker. Until he spots a lone lawyer, and is encouraged to go talk to him.

Title is from a Will Wood song

Notes:

First time writing ever since the explosion of a... certain fangan fandom... hope this is good!

Work Text:

"This simply cannot be!"

Damon thought walking into a library would stop Toshiko's godawful berate, but it seems as if she switched over to whisper-yelling at him.

"Well, it is," Damon chose his next words carefully, "Bug off." He felt weird stooping down to a teenager's way of speaking. However, even he can see it would've been too harsh to tell the little girl to "Fuck off,” sespite how irate she was.

"I'm going to fix it..." Toshiko's voice trailed off. Damon checked behind him seeing that she was staring at him—no—past him. Following her gaze he was met with a sour sight.

Wolfgang was alone at a fairly big table working. He had a briefcase next to him and everything. Papers were sprawled out on the table. The man himself seemed deep in thought.

"This will not do..." Toshiko fanned herself. "My brother will not romance a case report on Valentine's Day!" She realized how loud she was speaking and cupped her hands over her mouth. Still holding the fan.

Damon had to agree, the sight was pretty sad. "Well, would he be the Ultimate Lawyer if he wasn't getting cases done as soon as possible?"

"If he died of loneliness, that would also prevent him from being the Ultimate Lawyer." Toshiko hit Damon with her fan.

"...well his problem. Not mine." Damon began walking away before getting hit with the fan again. Despite her mouth still being covered, Damon could see the smile on Toshiko's face.

"If you’re lonely and he’s lonely," Toshiko started digging in the bag she brought. "Why not interact, or potentially, go out with him!" She held up a coupon.

"Well—"

"Nope! You're going!" Toshiko pushed the coupon in Damon's hand and Damon himself. It seems as if the fact Wolfgang seemed to take getting married to his job a bit too seriously has removed any patience she might have had.

Damon inspected the coupon in his hand. "Eden's Garden,” restaurant nearby, and likely owned by, the college around the corner.

Well, if it was going to keep Toshiko out of his hair. "Fine."

Damon goes to where Wolfgang is seated. At first he leans on a bookshelf to see if Wolfgang would notice him and call him over, or perhaps stare at him. They were still supposed to be fighting. Technically, they were supposed to hate each other right now.

Neither of them have actually talked. Just nasty glares from across rooms.

Wolfgang does not.

Damon observes Wolfgang while he works. The amount of care he put into each stroke he wrote was impressive... saying that it wasn't legible. It was pitiful. Wolfgang had a way of words. He could make someone happy if he could put it in a way that can be kept forever.

Wait what?! The date, Toshiko, and Wolfgang were getting to his head. Weird, insane thoughts were coming out.

Damon shook his head and stood up completely.  This whole idea was ludicrous, but he could feel Toshiko's stare on him. It was either Wolfgang or Toshiko. The lesser of two evils wasn't totally clear.

Before Damon could actually speak to him, he had to take in the hunched over lawyer. Not something you see everyday, if at all.

Damon clears his throat. No response. Wolfgang continues working.

Damon clears his throat for a second time. Again, there is no response. Wolfgang doesn't even look up.

Damon goes to clear his throat for a third time, this arouses a response from the Lawyer, "If you're trying to fake a medical emergency, have it be known that I don't have the hands to actually call  for help." Wolfgang looks up at Damon.

"Cool. Next time I have a medical emergency, I'll make sure to schedule it around your work time." Damon holds out one hand to pretend it's paper and pinches his index and thumb on the other to pretend it's a pen. "When are you next planning your affair on your school work with your lawyer work so I know when not to die."

"Har Har." Wolfgang sighs. "Is that all you came here for?" Wolfgang messed with the one piece of hair he left on his face. "If ridiculing me is what you came here to do, yes, I'm aware of the date, I feel utterly humiliated. Please excuse me, I have work to do."

"Could've fooled me." Damon messed with the folded coupon in his hand. He didn't even remember folding it.

Silence stretched out between them. The soft sound of writing filled the air. In the distance, someone flipped a page in their book.

"Well are you waiting for anyone?" Damon stepped closer to where Wolfgang was. He wanted to look over at the actual documents, but he was worried that might be illegal.

"Don't worry, this is practically public information already." Wolfgang noticed Damon's hesitation. "My notes may be less than legal to share with you, however."

"To answer your second question," Wolfgang sighed. "I regrettably do not have anyone to meet up with." He gestured to the work in front of him. "The only thing I'm doing is helping a coworker out on a case."

"Well, are you close to being finished?" Damon wouldn't want Wolfgang to actually suffer in his career because of something his sister set him up to.

"One second," Wolfgang wrote another sentence in his notebook. "I should be."

"Good." Damon looked at an annotation on the side of the case file.  "'Let Mr. Wr know to research more'?"  Damon read out loud.

"Yes, that is what I wrote." Wolfgang brought his hand up to his chin.

"If you spent time writing love letters you wouldn't be writing stuff like this on this day."

"Eh?!"

"I'm just saying."

Wolfgang let his hand drop, "Well, it's not like I really... have anyone to ask out."

"You're killing me here, Wolfgang." Damon sighed. "As everyone else is making horrible romantic decisions, you're here. Here. In a place that smells like dust."

"Well you're no different." Wolfgang put away the case file and notebook. Before Damon could respond, Wolfgang continued, "However, I suppose you're here against your own will."

Damon's mouth closed instantly. Frankly, if it weren't for the fact that the sunset's glow wasn't making Wolfgang look like a painting, Damon would have looked away from him.

"What—"

"I knew you were watching me, Damon." Wolfgang started. "You waited by the bookshelf for a minute, and before you even rested there you stared at something in your hand for a good two minutes."

"Before you got the paper in your hand, Toshiko pushed it in there. Before Toshiko pushed something in your hand you were both staring at me. Before you were both staring at me you ran in here to get away from her." Wolfgang tapped the back of his pen on the table.

"How—?"

"Here's one thing I can't figure out." Wolfgang ignored Damon's question. "Why did you accept to come here? Was it to laugh at me? To get away from Toshiko? Or..." Wolfgang let his voice trail off as he lowered it. "Are you so afraid of being alone that you're offering me a hangout?"

Damon's mouth went dry. He fixed his gaze on a couple underneath a lamppost outside. They shared a tender kiss. The taller lady holding her shorter boyfriend by the waist. She had flowers and a bear holding a heart. He held a small box of chocolates.

Another couple walked by. They held hands. Two men with roses in their pockets. They laughed about something.

A group of friends peered into cafes and small shops from the street.

Damon looked back at Wolfgang, a faux sense of anger washing over him, "So you've cracked the code. Want a medal?"

"I'll settle for your company." Wolfgang smiled at Damon, gesturing at a seat next to him. "Maybe tell me what that paper is about?"

Damon stared at him, utterly bewildered. "You... want me here."

Wolfgang nodded.

"You are tragically unloved." Damon unfolded the piece of paper in his hand.

"I am... aware?" Wolfgang tried to take a peak at what the paper was.

"You're unbelievable." Damon sighed. "Well, I have a coupon for Eden's Garden, the restaurant. If you'd like to go in..." Damon checked his phone, it was only 18:00. "...an hour. We could arrive on foot by 7:30."

"Sounds lovely." Wolfgang rummaged around in the briefcase. Damon sat down next to him.

For a second, Damon thought he would have to watch Wolfgang work. An activity only winning the silver medal of "Most Boring Things Ever" since he did once have to watch Ulysses study. Yet, what happened may have been even worse. Wolfgang took out two pieces of what seemed like brown paper, but what were actually twine. It was made into a way that strongly resembled hearts.

"I... came prepared...?" Wolfgang tried to explain as he placed  them on the table.

"You...planned this..." Damon looked gobsmacked at the idea. He looked between the hearts and the man in front of him.

"I--yes." Wolfgang admitted defeat. "I may have let it slip that I have..." He cleared his throat, "a deep admiration... for someone to my sister. She could not let me go through Valentine's Day without at least trying to get plans. Although, It seems I have blown my chances away. I apologize."

"You..." Damon didn't know how to finish his sentence without repeating himself again. A scary and unfamiliar warmth filled his chest. "...re insufferable."

"I'm aware you think of me like that." Wolfgang sighed. "Do you still want to go out to eat? I understand if not, truly. You accepted this to get out of interacting with Toshiko. I wouldn't expect you to want to interact with me normally. Let alone after I've confessed to you that—"

Damon grabs Wolfgang by his tie and kisses him. It's not as pretty as Damon expected. Unlike the movies, their noses bump. Teeth clank together. Wolfgang's eyes are widened in shock and he isn't kissing back at all. Damon pulls back as quickly as he grabs him.

"I... should've asked permission first." Damon looks away. "What a shitty first kiss..." he grumbles. "If it isn't obvious, of course I still want to go out with you."

Wolfgang shakes his head recovering and walks over to Damon. He cups the shorter one's cheeks. "Well, can I steal a much more enjoyable kiss? If you like it more it can be our first."

Damon looks away from Wolfgang's surprisingly stunning purple eyes. "Can I count it as my first kiss ever? I don't think we could do worse than that last one..."

"Gladly." Wolfgang leaned in.

Wolfgang pressed his lips on Damon's. Despite him knowing about it, Damon still made a small surprised noise as if he didn't think Wolfgang would go through with it. Quickly, he tried to think about the limited amount of media he has consumed with kissing in it. Maybe he should've taken up Diana and Kai to see that romance movie last week.

Wolfgang's hands guide themselves to Damon's hips. Damon sees this as a sign to bring his arms around Wolfgang's neck.

Damon nibbles at Wolfgang's lips, afraid of biting too hard. Wolfgang opens his mouth a bit allowing Damon to fully explore his mouth. All the small chew marks on the side, the lingering taste of coffee, the taste of mint gum to try and cover the coffee taste up, Damon could feel and taste it all.

They finally break apart when they remember they're in a library. Thank god for the date, or the amount of stares might have thrice as many as they currently got.

"I—wow—" Damon started panting. That was much better than their actual first kiss.

Wolfgang wiped his mouth and sat down. Damon followed shortly after.

"So Mr, Maitsu... dinner..." Wolfgang cleared his throat. Still trying to catch his breath.

"I just had my tongue in your mouth," Damon looked away from Wolfgang. "You can call me Damon."

"So, Damon... are we still on for dinner." Wolfgang smiled.

"If you want," Damon scratched the back of his neck.

"I would love dinner." Wolfgang pulled out a third twine heart and a paper crane. The paper crane contained a short letter written in Wolfgang's handwriting when he put hours into one word. Damon couldn't fight back the smile that appeared on his face.
