classical conditioning (making Pavlov proud)

Summary:

Sunghoon just wanted to be a responsible boyfriend before suggesting they get a dog. But when his research leads him to an article about using clicker training on humans, curiosity gets the best of him.
By the time his boyfriend Jake figures it out, it already got the best of him too.

Notes:

Im a psychology major, I wrote this using class notes as reference so it is scientifically accurate to an extend

Work Text:

Sunghoon was trying to be a good boyfriend, all right? Jake had been going on and on about how much he missed Layla, saying he wanted a dog more than anything. So naturally, Sunghoon started researching how to train one before even suggesting they get a pet. He was just being responsible. (Also, he really didn’t need a dog peeing on the carpet or chewing up his sneakers.)

The trouble began when he stumbled upon a video about dog clickers and their effectiveness in house training. He typed “dog clickers” into the search bar, and a flood of ads and tutorials appeared along with one very strange article that caught his eye.

“How to Use Dog Clickers on Your Partner.”

“Okay, that’s messed up,” he muttered to himself. “What kind of psycho would do that to someone?”

He clicked on it anyway.

The article went on and on about some guy named Pavlov and something called “classical conditioning.” Sunghoon read the whole thing, and he couldn’t lie, he was intrigued.

The reviews were wild. Wives bragged about making their husbands obedient. Men admitted to using clickers to spice up pet play in the bedroom.

Sunghoon closed the article. Then he opened it again. Then he closed his laptop, stood up, walked to the kitchen, poured himself a glass of water, drank it in one go, and stared at the wall for a solid thirty seconds.

“No,” he told himself firmly. ”Absolutely not.”

But the thought had already planted itself like a weed, and no amount of self-control seemed to pull it out.

Jake trained like a dog, Jake obeying on command, Jake on his kness without question, Jake confused and compliant like a good boy.

He goes back to the laptop, he reads the article again, and he searches for instructions.

Step 1 – Association

The first step was simple: make Jake associate the sound of the clicker with something positive. Based on Sunghoon’s research (his very serious, totally scientific research) the quickest way to do this was with food.

So he bought the damn dog clicker. Then he bought a box of Jake’s favorite chocolate candies, the ones with the caramel inside that Jake made embarrassing little moaning sounds over.

They were sitting on the couch watching some drama Jake had picked out. Sunghoon had the clicker hidden in his hoodie pocket, his hand wrapped around it like a secret weapon. The box of chocolates sat on the coffee table, innocently waiting.

Jake reached for one without looking, unwrapped it, and popped it into his mouth.

Click.

Jake didn’t even blink. He was too busy chewing, eyes glued to the screen.

Sunghoon’s heart hammered against his ribs. Okay. Okay, that was fine. He didn’t notice.

A few minutes later, Jake went for another chocolate.

Click.

Nothing.

By the fifth chocolate, Sunghoon had started to feel a little ridiculous. Was this even working? Jake was just eating candy like he always did, oblivious to the tiny sound happening inches away from him.

Then Jake paused mid-reach. He turned his head slowly and looked at Sunghoon with narrowed eyes.

“Why do you keep making that little clicking noise?”

Sunghoon’s soul briefly left his body. “What clicking noise?”

“That—” Jake made a vague gesture. “Like a pen clicking or something.”

“I don’t hear anything,” Sunghoon said, which was technically true because the clicker was currently silent in his sweaty palm. “Maybe it’s the heating system.”

Jake stared at him for another long moment. Then he shrugged and went back to his chocolate.

Click.

By day three, Jake had stopped asking about the noise altogether. He’d reach for a candy, hear the click, and eat without a second thought.

Sunghoon started clicking even when Jake wasn’t eating, like when he laughed at something on his phone, when he curled up against Sunghoon’s side and sighed contentedly. Whenever he seemed happy…

He hadn’t bought more. This was a deliberate part of the experiment. He wanted to see if the association had stuck.

They were in the kitchen. Jake was leaning against the counter, complaining about his coworker again, when he absentmindedly reached toward the empty chocolate box. His hand touched cardboard. He frowned.

“No more?” he said, disappointed.

Click.

Jake blinked. Then, slowly, his frown melted into a small, pleased smile. He didn’t even seem to realize why.

“Anyway,” he continued, “so then he sent another email—”

But Sunghoon wasn’t listening anymore. He was staring at the clicker in his pocket, then at Jake’s soft, happy face.

It worked.

Step 2 – Shaping

So now Sunghoon could evoke “happy feelings” in Jake at the click of a button. Literally.

It was intoxicating.

But the article had been clear: the clicker wasn’t just for making someone feel “good”. That was only the foundation. The real magic came next: shaping. Deciding which behaviors to encourage, reinforcing them until they became a habit, until Jake started doing them without even thinking.

“That,” Sunghoon thought, “is the fun part.”

He started small. He asked Jake to fetch him something from the kitchen. And when he did…

Click.

“Good boy,” Sunghoon said, smiling at him. “Thanks.”

The confusion on Jake’s face was priceless. His eyebrows drew together, his head tilting slightly to the side like a golden retriever who’d just heard a strange noise. He stood there in the kitchen doorway, holding Sunghoon’s water bottle, looking utterly bewildered.

“You just… thanked me,” Jake said slowly. “Like. Really nicely.”

“Am I not allowed to thank my boyfriend?”

“No, but you usually just go ‘thanks, babe’ without looking up from your phone. You called me a good boy.”

Sunghoon’s heart did a little flip. He kept his face perfectly neutral. “Did I?”

“Yes!” Jake walked over and handed him the bottle, but didn’t let go immediately. Their fingers brushed. “You did that thing again. The clicking thing. What is that?”

“I don’t hear any clicking, babe.”

Jake squinted at him. “You’re up to something.”

Sunghoon didn’t answer. Jake didn’t push. So he drew a plan.

He’d give orders and requests. When Jake obeyed, he’d press the button and offer praise. It was working like a charm.

By the end of the week, Jake was doing it on his own.

It started small. Fetching the remote. Making the bed, washing dishes.

Click. “Good boy.”

Click. “That’s my Jake.”

Click. “So helpful.”

Each time, Jake’s confusion melted a little faster. Each time, the pleased smile came a little easier. And by Saturday night, Sunghoon decided to push further.

They were on the couch. The TV was playing something neither of them was watching. Jake was curled against Sunghoon’s side, warm and pliant, his head resting in the crook of Sunghoon’s shoulder.

Sunghoon’s hand was in Jake’s hair, idly twisting the soft strands. Jake made a small sound, sleepy and utterly trusting.

Click.

Jake’s eyes fluttered. He nuzzled closer.

“Baby,” Sunghoon said softly.

“Mm?”

“Kiss me.”

It wasn’t a request. It wasn’t even phrased like one. Just two words, low and steady, dropped into the quiet between them.

Jake lifted his head. He didn’t question it. Didn’t hesitate. He just leaned in and pressed his lips to Sunghoon’s

Click.

“Good boy,” Sunghoon murmured against his mouth.

Jake shivered.

“Again,” Sunghoon said.

Jake kissed him again. Deeper this time. Needier.

Click.

“Such a good boy for me.”

Jake made a sound, something between a whimper and a sigh, and suddenly he was climbing into Sunghoon’s lap, straddling his thighs, kissing him like he was starving. His hands fisted in Sunghoon’s hair. His hips rolled forward.

Sunghoon caught his waist and held him still.

“Ah-ah,” he breathed. “I didn’t say you could do that.”

Jake froze. His chest was heaving, his lips swollen, his eyes glassy and dark. “Sunghoon—”

“Do you want to be good?”

Jake nodded frantically.

“Then ask.”

“Please,” Jake whispered. “Please, I want—I need—”

“Good boy”

Step 3 — Extinction

Every source said the same thing: To make sure the conditioning is working, you have to stop reinforcing it.

Sunghoon had read it in three different articles, two blog posts, and a Reddit thread that went to some very dark places. The logic was simple. If the behavior was truly learned, it wouldn’t disappear just because the reward stopped.

In fact, according to the research, the subject would often try harder at first. A last desperate push before the conditioning faded.

Extinction burst, they called it.

Sunghoon wanted to see if Jake would break, and by day three, Jake was unraveling.

Sunghoon didn’t have to ask for anything anymore. Jake anticipated. He made breakfast for both of them in the morning, he sat down when asked, he did the dishes, and everything.

Click, his eyes begged. Just click. Just once. Tell me I was good.

Sunghoon said nothing.

He sat on the couch, the clicker sat heavy in his pocket, untouched.

“Baby,” Jake whispered. His voice cracked. “Did I do something wrong?”

“No.”

“Then why won’t you—” He stopped. Swallowed. “Why won’t you say it? Why won’t you do the thing?”

Sunghoon tilted his head. “What thing?”

Jake’s breath hitched. He knew. He knew Sunghoon was playing with him, and he didn’t care. He couldn’t care. The need was too big.

“Please,” Jake said, broken.

Sunghoon’s heart thudded against his chest. God, he thought. He’s beautiful like this.

“Where are your glasses?” Sunghoon asked, tilting his head. “You’re not wearing them.”

It was a test. A deliberate change of subject. He wanted to see if Jake would push back, if the desperation would finally tip over into frustration.

But Jake didn’t push.

He just blinked once, twice, then turned on his heel and walked to the bedroom. Sunghoon heard the dresser drawer open, the soft clink of the glasses case, the shuffle of footsteps returning.

Jake came back wearing his glasses.

He stopped in front of Sunghoon. Waited.

Click, that gaze said. Please. Please click.

The look on his face was priceless. Devastated and devoted all at once.

“Good boy,” Sunghoon said softly.

No click. Just the words, and it worked

Jake made a sound, something between a sob and a laugh, and swayed on his feet. Sunghoon caught his wrist, tugged him down onto the couch, and arranged him until Jake was curled against his chest.

“Everything’s fine, don’t worry about it.”

Step 4 — Continuous Reinforcement

After proving that Jake was indeed very much conditioned to obey, Sunghoon decided that coming clean was his best option.

He sat Jake down on their bed and sighed.

“I need to tell you something.”

He pulled the clicker out of his pocket. Jake frowned.

“Is that a—”

He reached out and took it from Sunghoon’s palm. Turned it over. Pressed the tab experimentally.

Click.

His whole body flinched.

“Oh my fucking god,” Jake said slowly, staring at the clicker like it had just grown teeth. “That’s a dog clicker. You used a dog clicker on me?”

Sunghoon winced. “In my defense—”

“A dog clicker, Sunghoon. For dogs. The thing people use to teach their poodles to sit.”

“It’s not just for dogs,” Sunghoon said weakly. “There was an article—”

“You read an article?” Jake’s voice was climbing in pitch. He sat up, still holding the clicker. “You read an article about using dog clickers on people, and you thought what? That you’d just try it out? On your boyfriend?”

“It worked, didn’t it?”

Jake opened his mouth. Closed it. Opened it again.

“That’s not the point!”

“Then what’s the point?”

“The point is—” Jake sputtered, gesturing wildly with the clicker. “The point is you’ve been conditioning me like a Golden Retriever! I’ve been obeying you like some trained animal!”

“I haven’t clicked in three days.”

Jake went very still.

His eyes were doing something complicated, darting back and forth, processing slowly.

“You haven’t,” he said slowly.

“No.”

“But I still—” Jake swallowed. His voice dropped to a whisper. “I still made breakfast. I still did the dishes. I still put my glasses on when you told me to.”

“Yes.”

“I still wanted to do it.”

"Yes. You wanted to please me.”

Jake looked down at the clicker. Then at Sunghoon. Then back at the clicker.

“I think,” he said carefully, “I might be more messed up than I realized.”

Sunghoon reached out and gently took the clicker back. He set it on the bed, then took Jake’s hands in his own.

“You’re not messed up,” Sunghoon said. “You’re just… trained.”

Jake stared at him.

“That’s not better,” he said flatly.

“I should have told you,” Sunghoon said. “From the beginning. I should have shown you the clicker and asked if you wanted to try. That was wrong. What I did was wrong.”

Jake’s jaw tightened. “You think?”

“But I’m not sorry it worked,” Sunghoon continued, because lying would be worse now.

Then Jake laughed.

It wasn’t a happy laugh. It wasn’t an angry laugh either. It was something in between.

“You are,” Jake said, shaking his head, “the most manipulative bastard I have ever met.”

“I know.”

“I should be furious.”

“You should.”

“I’m not.”

Sunghoon’s heart skipped. “You’re not?”

Jake pulled his hands free, but only so he could grab the front of Sunghoon’s shirt and yank him closer.

“I Kinda like it” Jake said as he kissed Sunghoon passionately.

It wasn’t gentle. It wasn’t tentative. It was all teeth and tongue and desperate little sounds that vibrated straight down Sunghoon’s spine.

Click.

The sound was muffled between them, trapped somewhere against Jake’s ribs.

Jake moaned into his mouth. Deep and guttural. His hips rolled forward, grinding against Sunghoon’s thigh, already half-hard despite everything.

“Tell me,” Jake gasped, pulling back just far enough to speak. His glasses were crooked, his lips swollen, his eyes wild. “Tell me what you want. I’ll do it. I’ll do anything.”

Sunghoon’s thumb found the clicker again. Pressed.

Click.

“On the floor,” Sunghoon said. “On your knees. Hands behind your back.”

Jake moved like he’d been waiting for those words his whole life. He slid off the bed and settled onto the carpet, hands behind his spine.

He looked up at Sunghoon through those glasses and waited.

Sunghoon had never seen anything more beautiful.

He stood up. Circled behind Jake. Let him feel the weight of being watched, being studied.

“Good boy,” Sunghoon murmured, close to Jake’s ear.

Click.

“You like this,” Sunghoon said. It wasn’t a question. "You like being told what to do.”

“Yes,” Jake whispered. “God, yes.”

“You like knowing that I’m in control. That every time you obey, I see it. I reward you.”

Click.

“Yes,” Jake breathed. His hips twitched.

Sunghoon came to stand in front of Jake again. He looked down at him, at how he looked kneeling on the carpet, hands locked behind his back, chest rising and falling with shaky breaths. Jake’s lips were still parted, still waiting.

“Open your mouth,” Sunghoon said.

Jake opened.

Sunghoon reached down and pressed two fingers against Jake’s tongue. Just resting there. Feeling the wet heat, the way Jake’s mouth closed around them instinctively, the way his eyes fluttered half-shut.

“Suck.”

Jake did. His cheeks hollowed. His tongue curled and pulled, working around Sunghoon’s fingers like he’d been born for this. His gaze stayed locked on Sunghoon’s face, needy and devoted.

Click.

Sunghoon pulled his fingers out slowly. A thin string of saliva followed, breaking across Jake’s bottom lip.

“Good boy,” Sunghoon said. He unbuttoned his jeans. “Now you’re going to use that pretty mouth on me. And you’re not going to stop until I tell you. Understand?”

Jake nodded frantically. “Yes. Yes, I understand.”

Click.

Sunghoon freed himself from his jeans. He was already hard, had been hard for a bit, watching Jake fall apart, watching him choose this. He stepped closer, close enough that the tip of his cock brushed against Jake’s waiting lips.

“Open.”

Jake opened wider.

Sunghoon pushed inside slowly. Just the head at first, watching the way Jake’s mouth stretched around him, the way his eyes watered, the way his tongue pressed up against the underside like he was tasting something precious.

Click.

Jake moaned. The vibration traveled through Sunghoon’s cock and straight up his spine.

“More,” Sunghoon said, threading his fingers through Jake’s hair. “Take more.”

Jake sank forward. His throat opened. His nose pressed against Sunghoon’s pelvis, and he held there, eyes streaming, fingers digging into his own palms behind his back.

Click. Click. Click.

Three clicks in rapid succession, and Jake melted. His whole body went loose. His throat relaxed. He pulled back just to breathe, then pushed forward again, setting a rhythm that was desperate and messy.

“That’s it,” Sunghoon breathed. “That’s my good boy. Taking everything I give you.”

Jake whimpered around him. Tears slipped down his cheeks, drool spilling from the corners of his mouth and dripping down his chin.

Sunghoon’s grip tightened in Jake’s hair. He started to move in shallow thrusts at first, then deeper. Jake gagged once, twice, but didn’t pull back. Didn’t stop.

His eyes stayed fixed on Sunghoon’s face, tear-streaked and devoted.

Click.

Jake moaned again, the sound muffled and desperate. His hips rolled against nothing, grinding into empty air. He was so hard that Sunghoon could see it. The way his cock strained against his jeans, the dark spot of precome spreading on the fabric.

And Jake wasn’t even touching himself.

“Look at you,” Sunghoon said, voice rough with realization. “You’re not even using your hands, and you’re about to come apart.”

Jake whimpered around him. His hips twitched involuntarily, rutting against nothing but air.

Click.

Jake’s whole body convulsed. A strangled sound escaped his throat, vibrating around Sunghoon’s cock.

“Oh god,” Jake tried to say, but it came out garbled. His thighs were trembling. His hands, still locked behind his back, were clenching and unclenching like claws.

Sunghoon pulled out just enough to watch. “Are you going to come? Just from this? Just from having my cock in your mouth?”

Jake nodded desperately, tears streaming down his cheeks. He couldn’t speak. Could barely breathe. His whole body was wound tight as a bowstring, trembling on the edge.

“Look at you,” Sunghoon said, voice rough. “So eager. So good for me. You’d let me do anything, wouldn’t you?”

Jake nodded as best he could with his mouth full. The movement sent Sunghoon deeper.

Click.

Jake shattered.

His back arched. His eyes rolled back. A broken, muffled cry tore from his throat as his hips jerked wildly. Sunghoon felt the vibration of it around his length and felt Jake’s whole body seize and shudder as he came untouched in his jeans, hot and wet and completely without a single touch on himself.

Sunghoon’s breathing turned ragged at the sight. He was close, but he wasn’t done yet. He pulled out slowly, letting Jake’s lips drag along his length, and watched Jake gasp for air. Saliva stretched between them in glistening strands.

“Don’t move,” Sunghoon said.

Jake froze. His mouth stayed open. His hands stayed behind his back. He knelt there, wrecked and waiting, while Sunghoon caught his breath.

Click.

“Good boy,” Sunghoon said softly. He used his thumb to wipe a tear from Jake’s cheek. “You’re doing so well.”

Jake leaned into the touch. “Thank you… Thank you.”

Sunghoon smiled at him, ruffling his hair as he guided himself back to Jake’s lips. Jake opened eagerly, taking him in without hesitation, moaning around the familiar weight.

“Faster this time,” Sunghoon said.

Jake obeyed. His head bobbed with desperate urgency, his tongue working along the underside, his throat opening wider with each thrust.

Sunghoon felt his orgasm building, coiling hot and tight at the base of his spine. He could have pulled out, could have finished somewhere else, but Jake was looking up at him with those wrecked, devoted eyes, and Jake hadn’t stopped, hadn’t slowed, hadn’t done anything except exactly what Sunghoon told him to do.

“I’m going to come,” Sunghoon warned. “You don’t have to swallow. You can spit it out if you want.”

Jake shook his head, a small movement, barely noticeable with his mouth full.

His eyes said everything: I want it. I want everything you give me.

Sunghoon came with a groan, his hips jerking as he spilled into Jake’s waiting mouth. Jake took it all, throat working, eyes fluttering shut, hands still locked behind his back. When Sunghoon finally pulled out, Jake opened his mouth to show him it was empty.

Sunghoon sank to his knees on the carpet, gathering Jake into his arms. Jake collapsed against him, trembling and tear-streaked and smiling as he’d just won a prize.

“You’re incredible,” Sunghoon murmured into Jake’s hair. “You know that?”

Jake laughed weakly. “I’m a mess.”

“You’re my mess.”

He reached for the clicker on the floor beside them and pressed it one more time.

Click.

Jake shivered and tucked his face into Sunghoon’s neck.

“I love you,” Jake whispered. “Even though you’re a manipulative freak who conditioned me like a dog.”

“Love you too,” Sunghoon said, kissing his temple. “Now let’s get you cleaned up.”

Jake didn’t move. “In a minute. My knees don’t work anymore.”

Sunghoon laughed and held him tighter. The clicker sat on the carpet between them, forgotten for now. But not for long.
