Chapter 9: Extra 2 - Spanish Events of 1506

Chapter Text

26 April 1506: Philip and Joanna arrived in Castile, landing at Corunna.
15 May: Ferdinand of Austria is reunited with his parents, as Joanna reclaimed custody of her son as soon she arrived on Castilian soil.
20 May: Philip ordered to some of his men to take little Ferdinand to Corunna and depart from there for Burgundy with one of the ships. Joanna is not informed of that until hours after the departure of her son. The subsequent shouting match between husband and wife will be added to Philip’s list of evidences that his wife is crazy in the following meeting with his father-in-law, who is currently Regent of Castile for Isabella’s will.
20 June: Start of the meeting between Philip, Joanna and Ferdinand II of Aragon. Cardinal Cisneros is mediating between the sides who are claiming control of Castile: Philip is asking for full powers as he is Joanna‘s husband and she owes obedience to him and is clearly mentally unfit to rule, while Ferdinand of Aragon is counting on his popularity in Castile and Isabella’s will who left the government of Castile in his hands as Joanna’s regent for keeping his power.
30 June: after another bad fight with her husband, Joanna escaped from him, searching her father’s protection against her husband’s abuses. Philip continued to claim that Joanna is mad and she is throwing false accusations to him for her madness and also because her father is manipulating her.
18 July: Joanna is recognized as rightful ruler of Castile, and royal power was consigned in her hands. Ferdinand of Aragon accepted to return in his own kingdom but, worried for his daughter‘s health and safety, signed a secret document in which he denounced Philip’s tentative to usurp Joanna’s power and prerogatives.
22 July: Philip is finally proclaimed King of Castile jure-uxoris and named as Joanna’s co-ruler, against the precedent agreements
27 July: Ferdinand of Austria arrived in Burgundy, received by his aunt Margaret and meet for the first time her and his siblings Eleanor, Charles, Isabella and Mary.
18 August: Philip imprisoned Joanna in her rooms in Burgos, declaring her mad and unable to rule, assuming full powers in Castile as only ruler
25 August: Philip, King of Castile and Duke of Burgundy dies in Burgos officially of typhoid fever (but with heavy suspicions to have been poisoned) after a short illness
28 August: Joanna‘s freedom is restored at the arrival of her father, who assumed the regency of Castile for giving to his distraught daughter the time for recovering from her late husband‘s abuses. Philip is buried with full honors in the cathedral of Burgos, at least temporarily as Ferdinand offered Maximilian to send the coffin of Philip back in Burgundy or Austria, if the King of the Romans wanted it.
30 September 1506: Margaret of Austria, Dowager Duchess of Savoy became officially Regent of Burgundy for her young nephew, assuming temporary custody of the young Duke Charles and his siblings.
20 December 1506: Joanna, Queen of Castile remarried to Ferdinand of Calabria.
15 January 1507: the Cortes of both Castile and Aragon agreed to settle the joint succession of the two Kingdoms exclusively on the future kids of Joanna’s second marriage. Once this news arrived in Burgundy Margaret assumed full custody of her orphaned nephews and nieces together with her father Maximilian as it is clear that Joanna is like dead for them, likely forced from the circumstances and not of her own will.
