Chapter Text
“Uh, Dark Choco Cookie, how much longer until we get to somewhere with other cookies?” Strawberry nervously asked, glancing between him, GingerBrave and their quickly darkening surroundings.
“It can’t be that long, right?” GingerBrave asked, sounding a little more upbeat and hopeful than his companion.
Dark Choco sighed as he tried to figure out how to break the unfortunate news to them. “Well, with the things we’ve seen on our current path, we probably still have at least a couple days before we can find a place that managed to avoid falling apart after the outbreak.”
Strawberry turned her eyes to the ground with a quiet “Oh…”
“A couple days?” GingerBrave asked, sounding a little disappointed, though not rudely so.
“If we’re being optimistic.” He admitted. “Realistically we could be travelling for a few more weeks before any safe places recover or get built by survivors.”
“Aw…” The boy couldn’t hold up his cheerful attitude at the news.
Hoping to lighten the situation just a little bit, Dark Choco continued. “But we should run into a village soon, and hopefully we can gather some supplies that may have been left behind.”
Once he glanced at the fading light of the sun, he had to add “We’ll probably need to find a place to set up camp tonight soon though, it’s getting dark.”
“Yeah…” Strawberry mumbled, moving a little closer to the one adult in the group after some rustling caused them all the tense up.
After a minute passed with no sign of a creature coming to approach them, the three settled with huddling close together as they walked.
Dark Choco moved the two younger cookies a little closer to his front, hoping that if something did come after them, his body would serve as a shield from attack.
While GingerBrave and Strawberry did have both their original weapons along with the ones he’d given them, as well as experience from their pre-outbreak battles, they still didn’t have much proper training and said weapons had slowly gotten more damaged from battles with the creatures.
A candy cane wasn’t exactly made for battle after all, and Strawberry’s lollypop mace had been slowly getting chipped away from the stronger monsters they’d come across. The knives also weren’t a good option for most of the creatures who had been changed by their illness into things that were more than capable of overpowering most cookies.
While Dark Choco had done his best to deal with the accumulating damage, he’d never really learned more than the basics of weapon repair, and what he did know was meant for blades like swords.
It didn’t help that many times you can’t defeat them, only stun or injure them enough to get away.
Sometimes you could only pray you could outrun one.
Worse of all, each was unique, you wouldn’t know what they’re capable of unless you either already faced it before or having to learn while actively trying to get away or fight it.
Like say, one being able to turn invisible so it could try and sneak up on you.
Dark Choco didn’t hesitate when he noticed that, despite it appearing nothing was there, he could feel and hear something getting closer until it was almost right upon them.
By the time Strawberry had to suppress the beginnings of a scream and GingerBrave went for his cane, the creature’s head was already detached from its body thanks to Dark Choco’s sword.
He only took a single second to notice that it resembled a lizard, a carmeleon maybe, before urging the other two to rush away in case the creature didn’t stay down.
