He watched them grab Geralt by the long hair Jaskier had spent so many nights running his fingers through and raise the warrior’s head up to expose his throat. Golden eyes flickered listlessly, dulled by pain. Geralt’s arms twitched in a weak attempt to fight back as one of the soldier’s arms raised high above his head.
There was a flicker of moonlight on cold steel and then it was falling.
And all Jaskier could do was watch.

Derek knew. In his stomach and his chest, the ache was there, and it was implicative of a deeper issue. Spencer wouldn’t act like this if he didn’t have a reason to and it was obvious when his behaviour changed. Failing a test was one thing. Failing with a total zero, lashing out whenever it’s mentioned and refusing to return to the gun-range was an entirely different thing, and not a good one.

Kaer Morhen’s not what Jaskier had pictured. He’d imagined spending time with Geralt’s brothers, baking alongside Vesemir, and exploring the old grounds with with Geralt. What he gets is, ignored. Dismissed during after-dinner drinks with claims that he’s too weak to keep up with witchers. Sent out if the kitchen with a gentle smile that implies that he’ll only get in the way of things.
Or, Jaskier doesn't thinks he has a place at Geralt; Geralt is too stupid to say otherwise, at first at least.
